Hi frds
well coming back to the discussion after lots of faintings and clappings!

I have a feeling that most of orgnts. in india that claim to be doing social work r there for some gains, mostly monetary. there r big corporates that have social orgntns. where they pump in crores just to get tax rebates. the actual money that flows for the poor in such orgnts is fraction of what is contributed to.

then there r number of NGO's in india that r just there to collect HRD ministry and UNO funds.. Infact its a good business for many..

then there r ppl who want fame. this category includes ppl like Shobha De, Patekar n others.. these ppl out of their main business and cash in pockets who want fame..

There r still others who want recognition among ppl so that they can contest n win in muncipal, assemble elections.

Am i sounding pesimistic?? But frds this is reality..
do chip in ur views...

Re: Social Work - 09-12-2003, 09:21 PM

heck
in between all this angle maaroing is anybody talking about the topic
interesting topic it is !!!!
lets say we redefine social work or rather coin a new name for it
why?
coz theres a certain stigma attached to the word social worker
it conjures up images of a selfless urbane person who sacrifices his (good)life
to work for the upliftment of those poor souls (thats wat photo ops convey anyway)
so lets say we indulge in development work
wat kind of an organizational model wud succeed today?
one which is self sustaining
one which pays its participants enuf money to live a comfortable life(along with the fufilling content)
one which is democratic in nature
one which seeks holistic development (not just economic or social)
one which experiments at a micro level makes macro level policy accordingly(and god almighty!implements it too)
one which is confluence of the media, govt, biz comm, current social institutions, and the common man
lots more ideas tumbling around in my head
but obviously,
easier said than done!
ur thots janta
btw ppl who think on same lines (and like gladiator n know something abt world war, indian army are welcome to join' hog knights of indian order' hehe!)
cheers
the hog
more on this tommorow

Re: Social Work - 10-12-2003, 07:59 AM

hi guys,
it seems like right now this is the hottest topic on the block...
so i would not like to miss out on this opportunity.

as far as i am concerned, i have done some social work but unfortunately none of them have been on my own account. so this is something that i am looking forward to correct, sometime in the near future.

back in school we did some social work... i remember working as a voluenteer in a missionary hospital for a day, which used to treat poor ppl for free on some days... i remember that experience becoz our whole class was taken to the hospital for the volu work and finally we ended up having more volus than patients.
we did more productive work when there was a flood in our district... again it was organised by our school. i also remember donating old clothes to poor people, courtsey my school.

now in college, i was in NCC and it was our job (at least for some of us, if not all) to teach the kids of the poor people. but how much they learned was a matter of opinion and open to debate.

also in college, i did some work on a project which was developing some softwares for the schools in the locality.

well.... some work has been done by me but i regret that each one of them lacked a personal initiative (except, may be, the flood thing), but i'll try and put this right when i start my job next yr.
thats all from me folks.
have a good day.

Re: Social Work - 07-04-2006, 03:40 PM

new to this thread firstly i would love to congratulate one who started this thread.a commendable task to atleast give a thought to this thing....social work.i've done bit of social work in the school..(but i won't like to mention).i am just starting out on a good task.the organisation that i am associated with works on a mission to make masses computer literate.so i am spreading computer literacy.....just about to register two students for this who cant afford their education.hope to be able to teach them well so that they can think about their future....and be able to be a diplomat over the world.i just pray that it turns out well and accomplish what i think for them.there is a need to promote this thread.....you know get more people into this.....[/B][/B]

as we look back and survey the terrain to determine where we've been and where we are in relationship to where we're going, we clearly see that we could not have gotten where we are without coming the way we came.....
