Book reviews..!! - 03-05-2006, 03:06 PM

Hey guys...

We have books related threads in prep resources..which are very specific ofcourse..n this great thread "The Books I would Recommend"..but,it's more about naming the books you like..

This one calls out for the reviews..of the books you have read..liked..n disliked..We could analyse a particular book..on how it was written..its story line..your take on it n all the stuff..fiction,non fiction..new..old..any book..

If you are a voracious reader or just a beginner..You know that, when it comes to honing your language..you just can't escape reading!!So,please come up with your reviews..summaries..or whatever you feel about a particular book.Take it as a serious exercise guys..We could also discuss the main concepts of the books..

It would be fun analysing apart from helping us with our RC skills...so let's start..!!

Re: Book reviews..!! - 03-05-2006, 03:10 PM

okay for the start..I'm just copy pasting one of my posts..cause i got to go..I'll come up with new things soon...

I have just finished reading erich segal's Doctors..
Liked it a lot..n ws a better read than love story..I mean i just dont know why I didnt like love story much in the first place..ther's a book by danielle steel "Fine things" I happened to read that before love story..mayb that's y..I kno that Fine things n others many in the league are inspired frm love story only..n original is original..but as i said..I cant help it!

As for Doctors..It ws very moving..wud hv been better if shortened a bit..The climax went too overboard n filmy..n lukd like n attempt to connect the characters of the book..the "platonic" frdship between the protagonists laura castellano n Barney livingston ws really remarkable..

But most of all i liked th character Bennet landsmann..but he ws put to n abrupt n fast end..while he ws the most promising characters of them all..I wish I cud hv more of him in the book..

I like the starting n ending lines of segal..they r quite well written..enuff to create interest..but the matter inside is not always too good..I mean, though its all very moving..emotional..but still very filmy..There r places where u expect miracles for ur favourite characters..n they dnt happen..n there r places where thz miracles happen out of the blue n sudden..

What i din like..How stories of sum of the characters were left just like that..I mean partiality towards laura n barney wsnt justified..

But all in all....I luvd reading it..parts abt barney were cool...n bennet..n okay laura too at times..n the frdship they all shared...I even liked seth lazrus..n i wantd 2 read more about lance mortimer...

A gud book..

Re: Book reviews..!! - 06-05-2006, 02:06 AM

Just read "Tuesdays with Morrie" and quite unlike me, finished it in a single sitting. Its one of those books u just cant put down.
The book is about Morrie, a history professor, who has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease and is dying. A former student, Mitch, who has become a fairly well known sports writer, heard about his teacher from an interview with Ted Koppel on Nightline and decided to pay a visit. This visit soon turned into regular meetings - on Tuesdays .The story plots his declining health and at the same time charts through the wisdom of an old man.Sometimes it takes the wisdom of a dying man to make us realize that human relationships and love are more important than little trivialities we get obsessed about.
It makes u realise wht life is about and wht life is not about.
An awesome book and one of those rare ones tht can make u cry!
Happy reading...

I do like this thread a lot. Well, i shall be a regular here. Atleast i can rant about all the stuff i read now and then.

Puff thedragon - try reading "Five people you meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom. It's 100 times better than tuesdays with morrie. I didn't like it actually but i did like 5 ppl u meet in heaven. I'll leave it for u review it here.

the last book (or collection i should say) i read was "The origin and development of Psychoanalysis". Have less clue if it might qualify as a book. I tried finishing "Interpretation of Dreams". Its un-finishable. Freud goes into so much details and case-studies that it will take years to first read and decades to comprehend it. Atleast for me.

This book "The origin and development of Psychoanalysis" is a series of 5 lectures where Freud talks about how he came baout originating psychoanalysis. He discusses all about dream interpretation, conflict with conscience and subconscience, childhood influences, complexes briefly and with beautiful analogies. A must read for anyone even remotely interested in psychology.

I havnt read tht one sriks8 and will definitely give it a try, Mitch Albom sure comes across as an author who knows wht he is writing.
and if its really tht much better than "tuesdays with morrie"(which i find quite awesome), i can imagine it must make some reading.
