* Shantaram (currently reading)- so far , really good. One of the International Bestsellers.

* City of Joy

* Blink

Read "The company of women" by Khushwant Singh and God, Did I repent !
Why wasn't I forewarned ?! *sigh*
Well, just not to my liking.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte - 15-05-2006, 10:42 AM

When I picked up this book, I thought ki it wud b a book like 'Pride and Prejudice' or 'Sense and Sensibility' types.... but it was a complete opposite of that...I found it more of a 'Devdas' type ......

Set in the early 19th century in rural England, it tells the story of Heathcliff who is an orphan and brought into the Earnshaw household ..... Hindley, son of Earnshaw despises Heathcliff coz his father is more fond of him than Hindley. Gradually love develops between Heathcliff and Catherine, young sister of Hindley. But due to circumstances and opposition of Hindley, they cannot get married and Catherine is married to Linton. Heathcliff goes somewhere and comes back after few years totally transformed and is set to take revenge from all the ppl who wronged him....

The reason i compared it to 'Devdas' is that it has the same theme of self-destruction of a person who lost his love. And here the destruction is not restricted to just himself..... he goes out to destruct everybody and anybody he comes across.... Regarded as a classic, it is very gripping novel once u get used to the language coz its written a long time ago.....

Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.

Hi guys...!!!

It's been long since this thread has been inactive..n It's time to revive it back..

CAT fever is on..for both '06 & '07 aspirants..n everybody's hooked to read as much as they can..I would request all of you to come forward & put up your detailed reviews on everything you are reading as an improvement exercise..That Analysis will also later help us keep in mind the things we learnt from the books..

n Please..I urge you to not to put up your list of favourite books here..for that stick to books I recommend thread..Here put up your specific views on every book you are reading..its good points..bad points..strengths..weaknesses..lucidity..& most importantly language..The way you write a review expresses the way you have understood or grasped the theme of the book..& it is going to be very helpful in summarising & comprehensing skills for RC Passages..& it's anyway fun!

So get on work guys..

cheers!

Re: Book reviews..!! "Shantaram" - 29-08-2006, 08:59 PM

Okay... i finished reading Shantaram by Gregory david Roberts about 2 weeks back. its one of those books that make you feel that the person in perspective has had his share of more than one lives in just one lifetime ( Khushwant Singh's Autobiography was another such experience) well, Roberts is an Australian drug addict(after he breaks up with his wife), gets into armed robbery, etal and is sentenced to some 20 odd years in jail. after serving 3 years he breaks out and lands in Mumbai on a false passport. well, for the next 8 years or so he remains in Mumbai and pops in and out of multiple lives. he is a doctor at a slum( a noble act), an important part of the Underworld, very close to the top hierarchy, even shows us a glimpse in a Bollywood movie ("Paanch Paapi" - Chunkey Pandey,Kimi Katkar), for a while goes to Afghanistan to help the locals in their fight against Russian empowered tribals, runs a fake passport/visa business for the underworld, well all that is just a tip of the iceberg. also included is a first hand account of the most notorious prison in Mumbai-the Arthur Road prison.all in all a must read. Apparently a movie is being planned on the book, with Johnny Depp in the lead. www.shantaram.com is a good place to look for leads.a prequel and a sequle to shantaram is also on the cards.

Heard its a good book.....didn't have the inclination to pick it up even after reading the backflap....too lazy

I tried to read "Crypto". Its a book about code breaking, cryptology (err...obviously ) , and the like...

Too heavy for me....first book I left midway.
