Just finished The Moon and the Six pence by Somerset Maugham. And amazing piece of work, though I still feel I like Razor's edge better.
The hero is somewhat like Ayn Rand's Roark in some aspects. Wonder if Ayn Rand got "inspiration" from this book. The story is just simple - A 40 year old stock broker deserts his family and runs off to Paris to become a painter. The story describes his road to glory. (Though not in material sense) What is intresting is the completely unsentimental style of narrative and the unique characterization.
Really worth a read. | | | | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to The Raven For This Useful Post:

Some of the books I read lately
book: Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
This ones a classic by Maurier also adapted into a movie by Hitchcock which was an instant hit as well.
It is stil remembered by its famous opening line "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again". Its about the life of a young girl who finds herself in charge of a huge mansion with many servants when she gets married to a widower. She is constantly haunted by the shadow of Rebecca (the ex-wife) which makes her life all the more miserable. Out of all of this mindgame, suddenly zooms out a mistery about the death of Rebecca.
This is a book with a strong plot and a climatic ending and has been considered as the best Gothic romance of the 20th century.
The best thing I liked about the book is that there is almost no limit to which you could dig deep into the book. The more you delve deeper and deeper the more you reveal the inner most feelings interwoven with the words to urself. More suitable to the Modern Classic lovers. Infact one of the best u can get.
book: Catch Me IF You Can by Frank W. Abhagnale
The true version of the famous movie starring DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, straight from the horse's mouth. Abhagnale is the youngest and the most famous con man ever to have lived. This novel unravels many of the secrets of his cons especially issuing fradulent checks, which was the best known of his skills. After reading this book I felt the movie did not do complete justice to the story of his life as did the novel.
Here's what you find on the Jacket of the book:
Frank W. Abagnale, alias Frank Williams, Robert Conrad, Frank Adams, and Robert Monjo, was one of the most daring con men, forgers, imposters, and escape artists in history. In his brief but notorious criminal career, Abagnale donned a pilot's uniform and copiloted a Pan Am jet, masqueraded as the supervising resident of a hospital, practiced law without a license, passed himself off as a college sociology professor, and cashed over $2.5 million in forged checks, all before he was twenty-one. Known by the police of twenty-six foreign countries and all fifty states as "The Skywayman," Abagnale lived a sumptuous life on the lam--until the law caught up with him. Now recognized as the nation's leading authority on financial foul play, Abagnale is a charming rogue whose hilarious, stranger-than-fiction international escapades, and ingenious escapes-including one from an airplane--make Catch Me If You Can an irresistible tale of deceit. | | | | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to cattie For This Useful Post:

Thanks in adv! | The book relates the current philosophy about the planets, universe, force motion and scientific beliefs to those of the ancient philosophical beliefs (Buddhism, Chinese taoism and vedic).
All in all really good read. You will find the start very nice. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to bhandari4u For This Useful Post:

Did any of the Tolkien fans catch hold of the Children of Húrin? If so, would definitely want a review. I have been waiting for this, quite eagerly. But I heard that it suffers from the same problems of unfinished works. Anyone up for a review? You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine.' So that was nice Restless as always

Just finished reading ' The Selfish Gene ' by Dr. Richard Dawkins.
This book is a phenomenon in the western World, though not so in India, because of ppls ignorance aboiut Genetics.
btw,
This book provides a Genes eye view of life in this planet and how it has 'evolved' by various processes like Gene flow, natural selection, selective breeding etc, over a few hundred million years.
Slightly technical, but it assumes no knowledge of Genetics. Anyone can read this. Also it provides excellent insight into how life has evolved from nowhere(read 'primordial soup' ). It'll give an idea as to how u r and what u r are basiically a consequence of, in large part of your genes-good or bad.
Highly recommended for ppl reading interesting, insightful science stuff. But this also gives very original views on every topic and doesn't blur the concepts to the point of being inaccurate.
