Transporting one's bike while moving from city-to-city -
23-03-2006, 10:02 AM
Hey guys,
I may have to migrate from Delhi in the next month or so. I was wondering what potential options I have in moving my vehicle from Delhi to say Chennai. I know the railways is an option, but does any one have any experience to validate the safety of my bike? Airlines would be expensive and I am not really aware of any road transport method. So the question basically
What is the safest way to transport my bike? (no damages, scratches)
How much is the expense likely to be?
If rail/air how far ahead do I have to book the ticket?
Would be great if someone with prior experience responded.

Hey,
I was planning to start something on this.I have a P180. Planning to shift outta Chennai.
There are 2 options. Either the Railways or a Courier company like GATI or so.
Railways - They charge a normal sleeper class ticket fare I heard. But you have to pack the whole thing yourself, pay "tips" to the blokes out there, and still there's no guarantee about the condition of the bike. You need an NOC too.
GATI et al - They charge something like 1500-2000 bucks, will pack it for you, and the Bike's generally undamaged.
I am planning to transport it thru GATI or so, though I am not sure if they have an office in Chennai.

Hi convolutedsignal,
Even I had to carry my bike from Hyderabad to Vizag a few months back and the options in terms of safety and cost were 1. train 2. bus. but i found that train is more economical then the later. Regarding the safety of your bike you dont have to worry much. Take your bike to a mechanic and ask him to remove the mirrors carefully. so that the threads of the mirror fixture do not get spoilt. then go to the railway station and ask the coolie over there to pack your bike( he may charge some money for this). Another thing is ensure that your bike does not have much petrol in it. The rail authorities might ask you to empty your bike tank.
I think I provided enough information.

Mave,
Gati does have office there in chennai , and I was to shift my bike from delhi to trivandrum , and i remember i was asked around 1500 rs for the whole stuff . they ask for 1% of the value of the bike to be added to the fare. One friend of mine got his bike from coimbatore to delhi by truck and spent hardly500 bucks , but if its a p80 u better play safe
regards
and take care
btw these are te addresses of gati in chennai , they have two more , but dint want to get banned bcoz of spamming

I(or atleast my Mom ) transported my Pulsar(150) fm Mumbai to Hyd. Via train. Nominal fare.NO scratches. It was packed up before being loaded onto the train. Yeah, empty fuel tank as well as oil tank. As for condition, its not like there's someone in their with the sole intent of scratching your bike If you've packed it correctly, rest assured there wont be any scratches. Make sure you have a NOC from your RTA otherwise it could cause problems.

Hey Vivek,
I got my scooter transported from Baroda to Bangalore in 2003 through GATI. Thought it was fast and painless. You need to take a NOC (no objection certificate) from Gujarat. I have no clue how to get it done as my friend did it for me from Baroda. That would mean you can safely ride a DL registration in TN without the cops harassing you - for 1 year.
It cost me 1500 bucks including the insurance that is mandatory (for loss/damage through transport). My scooter had so many scratches - I am not too sure I would have noticed if there were a few more
BTW, chennai ? duh ! Dai come to Blore da !!

Ketan, you need to get an NOC fm the RTA where the bike was registered. Note that you should hopefully have the Original Bill of Purchase coz the Road Tax payable will be calculated based on that. Also, you need to have a valid bike insurance. Depending on whether your bike is <1yr old 9% of sale value 1-2 =>8% and so on. I got turned down at the counter coz i didnt have original bill.
Otherwise , you could always go to the RTA office and look out for a broker.

To obtain an NOC, we need to pay 9% of the sale value ? Thats close to 6500 bucks!!
Neo, can you pls clarify.
