Re: Transporting one's bike while moving from city-to-city - 23-03-2006, 01:53 PM

Hi ppl,

I've transported my bike twice, once from hometown Lko to Bhopal during engg n then from there to Delhi during mba n now i'm on the verge of transporting it to Ahmedabad during internship there . So I give ya my pieces to info but then before that put in a somewot related query....

Query : I'm also plannin to move my desktop to ahmedabad, dont want to w/o pc for two months. Since i'l b going via plane (thnx to d co.!!) i'm want to take it along. Though i've taken pc thru train as well twice (put it under ur seat n tat's it). But i'm not sure abt d plane.... as in train mein to its me who loads n unloads it... but i dont know how wil d handlers thrown d lug arnd or not. I dont want to end up wid cracked monitors n crashed hard disks (ok i can take tat in suitcase though). Koi batao.............. shud i cancel tat plane n got onto d faithful trains again???

As for the bike experiances -
By Road - Gati n few others do it... but moi have no info!!
By Train -
Procedure - There are two ways. Send as parcel, or as luggage. Both have different dept at any railway station so dont confuse n end up wid another. Parcel is wen u want to send it from one point to another by d railways itself (boleto u neednt be travelling along). So u or someone do d docs, get it packed, pay (explained later) n dey transport it via suitable trains. Then d destination show doc n get it out. On the other hand, wen u want to tat it along as lug... go to d lug section. The bike wil b tagged onto ur travelling ticket n in the train u r travelling wid. Rest procedure etc are similar.

Then wot's d diff in the two.... Well, as parcel they'l send it via any train they deem fit. As lug its in the same train. Also as lug u can have it loaded unloaded in frint of u (this is imp... this is where chnaces of straches etc happen). Also its in the same train while as parcel it cud it in another train while u r travelling in another. Also there have been cases wen as parcel it takes its sweet time coming... So reco is u take it along as lug, unless u r not travelling to d place in which its obviously as parcel. Moi have only had it transported as lug (also helps tat u drive into st on bike, hop onto d train n the get out on d bike n woooo...)

Docs - Have the usual docs - registration, dl, etc. for verification.

Moolah - Wt of bike (taken as 2 quaintals) x Rate per quaintal (100 or 200... dont remember) + 1% of the declared cost of bike as insurance amt + taxes. Cacth is wot u declare as the cost... u may declare as only 20k then only 1% of tat is 200/- but if somethin happens then u get only tat insured value. Moi always declare at cost.... never know wen lighting strikes. U can try to be brave though....

Packing - At each st rite near these sections there r ppl who do loading for railways (not coolies... ) some of them will be ready to do packing for u as well. Takes 50-150 bucks depending on ur n his bargaining skills... he's pack it up. Press him to do as a gud job of it... have more padding to headlights, tails, metal n plastics parts. Hve it done in front of u!!

Risks - It depends on d amt of lug n parcels tat is been taken along... so wen going to some place like delhi expect more loadings in lug van so it mite be ki something is put onto ur bike (say mike cans... hehe.... naahh doesnt really happen). So find out earlier which trains are genreally la\oaded more... lug section wil tell ya tat. Also during loading unloading... d loadedr wil do it n they know how to do it... some mite expect some money. again depends onto negotiatioon skill (mba course in my nxt sem may help.... ha!). At st in between keep waking down if u wish to n look it up... bcoz as somewhere some stuff has to be loaded unloaded (rarely... but may happen) so ur bike mite be moved a bit. Now sometimes it may happens (only heard does but its a possiblity) tat bcoz there's little time d bike it not loaded onto or not unloaded.... in whihc case d train goes away. But not to worry world is round so nxt wen another train comes it' bring it along (it not loaded) or on return it'l drop it (if not unloaded). So all in alll, rest assured... d railways have their trains n they'l not take ur bike.

Tat's it.... mayb wil write in wid my this times experiances someday onto this post.... til then somebody ans my query ki how safe is it to take desktop in plane????

Cheers!!

Hey Veekey,

what about NOC and road tax? Did you paid that in Delhi/Bhopal?

I think if you are just going for internship (2-3 months) then dont take you monitor.. just get a monitor on rent from a near by local computer shops....i dont think it will cost you much.....(not sure though...)

Hi Ketan,

Yaar I nvr got an NOC at bhopal or presently at gurgaon. One can easily get away wid as police dont really care... But i have a feeling tat if u end up in an accidnt or its stolen then fite ho sakti hai. So if its temporary thing upto some months/yrs than u mite ake a risk. But in if u intend to shift permanently or for a longer period u mite as well get an NOC. Basically NOC is tat u can drive arnd a vehicle which was registered one state in another now. So get NOC in the original city where vehicle was registered. Exact procedure include form registration papers, insurance papers, may include ur dl, may include physically having vehicle present (may... not so sure) but all these things can be bypassed if u catch hold an agent/broket. 100 bucks shud gets everything done... Some paper work may be req at destination city RTO.

I know this amount is contary to wot Neo told (namely 6500 types) but i asked ppl here n tats wot dey all said!!! Also road tax i'm told is now(!) not needed to be paid in the destination state again.

Wot i'd say is tat u go down to d city RTO, corner some agent n ask him d procedure.... it's b kinda same at ur original place as well. Hope tat helps

Btw liked ur rent-a-monitor thing... hope its possible in Ahmedabad.

Cheers!!

So the question basically

What is the safest way to transport my bike? (no damages, scratches)
How much is the expense likely to be?
If rail/air how far ahead do I have to book the ticket?

Would be great if someone with prior experience responded.
If your company is transferring you to a different city, then I guess you could reimburse transportation charges for your belongings. In that case you can try a better courier service that would transport your bike harmless.

Hi,
By my personal experience , railways is the best option .I have done it while travelling in the same train in which bike is sent, so u are there when its loaded and when its removed.few pointers

1.can load the bike only at a starting point of a train.unloading can be done at any station as you want, just mention it in the form.

2. all documents should nbe in order like PUC, RC book and insurance.

3.railway will take sleeper class fare between the stations + 1% of value of bike towards insurancce. Now lets take Anils example . Shld he declare the bike value at 80k he will have to pay 800 + sleeper fare from chennai to bhubneshwar. now you can write value = 10k and save 700 bucks but u will have to give something to the official at the parcel office(atleast this is how it works in mumbai)

4. packing will be done by porters .they pack it very well , remover the mirrors and keep it with you.negotiate and bargain hard for a good deal.

5. you dont have to rush to the parcel van on alighting...railway will unload the vehicle ...u just have to claim it by showing relevant documents .

6. in case the bike is going across states, you will need to pay some octroi.
