| How about some Sports Books? -
13-03-2006, 01:37 PM
Right now I am reading "Its not about the Bike" by Lance Armstrong. An amazing read I must say.I had been searching this book for quite some time, but didn't used to get it anywhere.Well,it made me think about this breed of books,i.e. books pertaining to sports. These are the most neglected type.Even though there are several fantastic books in various sports, you don't get them easily.
So how about a thread where you can post your favourite sports books or some that you know are good, but haven't got a chance to read yourself.Let the knowledge spread and the sport afficionados relish them.
Here are some of my picks:-
1.Sunny Days(Sunil Gavaskar)
2.A Corner of Foreign Field(Ramchandra Guha)
3.Sometimes I Forgot to Laugh(Peter Roebuck)
4.The History of West Indian Cricket(Michael Manley)
True, these are all cricket books. But,that is what I've read mostly. However I know that there is also tremendous literature in some other games, notably basketball and baseball.
So,hey everyone, just post in the good 1s you have read or know. "Why does any kid like a bike?It is liberation and independence, your first set of wheels.A bike is a freedom to roam, without rules and without adults." -Lance Armstrong,"It's Not About the Bike" Why 1 follows sports? I have an idea,An !pod can change your life...

4.The History of Wets Indian Cricket(Michael Manley) | Contact a guy at PG called Aimar, who is a crazy book reading sports fanatic. Ijust finished LAnce's autobiography 2 days ago, and felt a little shortchanged. I wasnted to know more about his life (Kik has dissappeared again), and his TDF win, the 2nd time around!
I'm reading Boris Becker's autobiography atm To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them? Sumit's nostalgic post in Football Club reminded me of this.We currently have a very good bunch of sports fanatic puys and as mentioned many of them may stop frequenting this place in some time from now.So why not make use of it?This thread was a failure back in '06 as it didn't attract any1,but I am sure there is a lot which can be mentioned over here.So scribble down your favourite sports books here and the reason why you liked it.I have always had a special liking for such books. What a pity that they are the most neglected type in Indian Book Stores(think of it - Absolutely no outlet is able to get Indian Summers for me.Seems the book has run out of stock in India itself)
Anyway the best sports book I read in last 2 years - Men in White (Mukul Kesevan,a collection of columns written by the author over many years. Its brilliant cause it is unapologetically biased and impeccably logical.)
Am longing to read 1ce again - Sometimes I Forgot To Laugh (Peter Roebuk,a brilliant narrative of a cricketer struggling with his cricket and life in the county circuit)
PS - I once read somewhere that the best literature and movies in any sports are in Baseball. "Why does any kid like a bike?It is liberation and independence, your first set of wheels.A bike is a freedom to roam, without rules and without adults." -Lance Armstrong,"It's Not About the Bike" Why 1 follows sports? I try to read Sports columns which I have fallen in love with after my MBA preparation started... I like Peter Roebuk... But I feel the best sports columnist is our very own Rohit Brijnath... His writings influence and inspire me to better myself in what ever I do... | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to spicyforsure For This Useful Post:

One of my favourite sports books is Gerrard, which, as you can guess is the biography of Steven Gerrard. Of course, one of my favourite sections of the book is the description of the Liverpool - Milan UCL final 2005.
Overall, I'd say the book does produce an adrenalin rush, and I'm not saying this just because I'm a Liverpool fan. | | | | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to sumitrocks For This Useful Post:

I don't think you can classify biographies of sports personalities as sports books. Some of them may be, but for me a sports book is one which talks about technicalities of a sport. I am trying to get my hands on a book of football tactics. A friend may get it for me from Europe Pain is nothing. Pain is in the mind. If you can walk, you can run. The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom. Forza Inter | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to rockball For This Useful Post:

Rockball, apologies for disagreeing, mate! But, in my opinion, a book containing technicalities of a sport would be more of a sports manual than a sports book.
However, I am fine with discussing books/manuals/biographies/autobiographies here. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to sumitrocks For This Useful Post:

Any sports biography gives more inside of sports from players perspective.Whereas any technical sports manual would give u more info just from sports point of views.
We should definitely discuss more on sports biographies , rather than long technical journals on sports

Yep Sumit!Anyway as said by you this thread deals with all kinds of books that have anything to do with any sports.Heck,we all are sports fanatics, bring on anything
Sunny Days is a fascinating read, you just flip through the pages, much like a Sidney Sheldon novel. You know that what you are reading isn't the wisest thing in the world, yet you can't put it down.
A sad update - I think Indian Cricket by Hindu publications is not being published this year onwards. To the starters,Indian Cricket is to Indian cricket, what Wisden Almanac is to British cricket. And yes,we also had been having our own "5 cricketers of the years" just like England since years.
