The biggest problem is Nobody will speak anything against their family.. Remember 'Monsoon Wedding'.. i heard lotsa ppl commenting afterwards tht it hppns in lot of families..
And you really can't punish these kinds of sadists.. Come on, lets face it half the time these are ppl supporting whole family.. send them to jail..n u've got another family on streets.. who'll get the blame.. the victim who dared to voice her/her concern.
Then you've trust problem.. how many would really believe a child's words or a servant's word..
The worse part is we live in society who lets a rapist get away with 5 yr sentence but rape-victim is made to suffer all her life..

Hi Sonika

If we arent punishing a culprit because he is the sole earning member then I guess we have to blame our poverty and backwardness yet again. To this problem the solution could be a working woman aswell in the family. Who can take her decisions and have the capacity to stand by them on her own. For this we need to educate women , make them get the education etc needed to look for a job, or get some vocational training. Views on woman empowerment ? Do you think that will help ?

Euphoria,

That thread started off well, I had also contributed to it and had discussed the same with j0 and estranged. But as many threads, it became the an essay writing competition - all words, no action.

I cannot blame people as I myself did not initiate a group action. The reasons being the same as with everybody.

I strongly believe - "to give back, I need to achieve something". Till then, I do it on an individual basis. I have been involved in politics and society betterment at a very micro level - my own housing society. Trust me - things are not as good as one feels they are - or moreover "can be". I had mentioned this in the politically pagal thread as well.
"People get the government they deserve" (I guess it was Lincoln) - is a bare fact.

The most difficult task is to change someone - or even the thinking.

This is the macro level issue. Break it down into smaller issues and the root cause can be linked to one thing - Lack of Information.

Try to educate and inform the people around you and find the difference. Talk in quantifiable terms. Give day-to-day examples and people will listen.

The bottom-up model has proved to be The Most Successful Model in the Indian social scenario.

As Pooza mentioned, if 10% - or even 1% - of our 50K puys can make a difference at the most micro level - it is bound to get noticed and hence grow.

Definitely, that is one concrete solution is most of the problems.... A simpile analysis can prove it... Since ages women have been subjected to as the lower mortal and a household person (u know the char diwari concept...). So man has thought that she is only fit to cook, clean and take care of the house.. Moreover, earlier there weren't any women to object to their supression and hence man continued to keep her might on her.... All the social evils have arisen because women were always 2 steps behind man and never had the courage to revolt...

But with the changing times, women have become increasingly independent and have shown that they are lesser to none. This way, people have started respecting women more and more.... and they have shown that their calibre is not secondary...

One thing that is equally influential is the media... which has been an enlightening power since ages.... Now the people are becoming more and more liberal in their ideas. One can't eradicate this problem in one go.. but step by step... Women certainly would have to come forward to stop any oppression against them and raise their voice collectively....

Now a days many NGOs also have been formed against the atrocities against women and i must say that they have come out with flying colours... They have managed to reach inside women groups and tried a lot to help the poor and the needy.... This has been among many areas... call it in prostitution, sick and poor people, orphanage.... and combined with media, they have been most beneficial.....

Hi

A very nice post there. You have put forward some of the real problems. It certainly is difficult to change the thinking of a person and the root cause of most of the problems is lack of information. Thanks for putting the number here. That gives me an idea. We have one resource completely at our service, that is the internet. We have to begin somewhere , why not through the internet. We can make people aware of the fact that 1098 is the child helpline number, but we also have to make those children aware of what they need to protest against, what exactly is wrong. What do you say ?

Hi Gaurav

You are right there. Women empowerment is a must. That will solve too many issues in one go. and media coverage. Maybe we can contact local channels atleast in our respective cities and see if we can flash the child helpline number atleast. This is just one suggestion. Maybe you can come out with a better one

Definitely pooja, such things are being done.... although may not be on a scale everybody notices... eg.. there is a very famous crime reporter serial which comes nearly everyday on NDTV (sorry.... can't remember the name... but its a one whose anchor person looks quite like Veerapan.... If u remember the name of the series, remind me the name)..... Anyway, such examples show the pro-activeness of the media...

There are a no. of child helplines, NGOs etc etc who are working 24X7 for this cause and i think the best way, to know about them would be to work in any such NGO for atleast 3 months... Even at PG we can form some groups to spread the awareness.... We may be very small as single individuals, but as a whole, we can represent great power... So ppl in respective cities, like Delhi, or others can form their own PG groups and go for this cause..... Even if we try to spread the awareness..... then we would be backed by many NGOs as such....

And its not just about children.... there are so many NGOs working in the Aids deptt.... who need volunteers today.... because one of the most essential things is to volunteer.... All of us can be master MBA and can give extra ordinary comments in PG forum, but the real act will come, when we gut together and actually start some volunteering work....

What do u feel pooza..... (pooja )?

Hi Gaurav

You are right. Too much is being done , but maybe not reaching the right person ....

I have initiated something on yahoo messenger today .. a message. If you could forward it too.. to everyone on your list. They need not be under 18 you know .... But maybe someone on their list is .. We never know when it will reach the right person. This is not a great effort .. But we all can try and begin somewhere ... What do you say? We have been lucky that we didnt have to go through such a tortured childhood, why not help those who arent that lucky ....

I am putting it up here. Any pgite who can take the effort to just copy paste it and send it to everyone on their list .....I am saying thanks in advance

Heres the msg :

Child harassment:
Are you under 18 or know someone who is. please forward this to everone on your list. Maybe it will reach the right person. " Have you ever been forced into any sexual behavour that you have not wanted maybe at home, in school or elsewhere... by someone you know be it your friends, senior, teachers, uncle or aunts, cousins neighbours or anyone under the sun. Did they ever use sexist terms, comment about body parts, make sexual advances, unwanted touching, gesture, taunt, touch you or make you touch them in a way you werent comfortable with, threaten you not to tell anyone about it. Dont wait go tell your parents or teachers or anyone you are comfortable with. Best is make a telephone call to "1098". They will help you out. Its wrong to keep quite and tolerate."

Pooza ( its pooza )

P.s: If you feel its better to send it through e-mail then please mail it to everyone in your address book. A small step .. but who knows .. it might change a childs life
