I think Akram would have made a better kaptaan. True, he has an excellent record as captain, but then look at the team he had at his disposal... they were, after all, called 'The Invincibles'.

IMHO...

Re: Cricket Dream Team (All Time) - 07-03-2006, 06:23 PM

No matter what, this is no easy job.Anyway,my impromptu picks:-

The Test Team:-
1.Sunil Gavaskar(No better accumulator of runs than him.He is the 1 whom you wud rely upon 2 hang on there when it matters. No matter how great any team is you need such players)
2.Jack Hobbs(his records speak for him)
3.Donald Bradman(no arguments)
4.Vivian Richards(the ultimate swagger,u can't leave him out.can and also used to trounce any1 anywhere)
5.Gary Sobers(there can't be a more cmplete cricketer)
6.Brian Lara(the man's a genius even though it may not go well with the 1s obsessed with sachin.the thing is that he plays when it matters)
7.Keith Miller(a fine allrounder.a true match-winner with both bat n ball)
8.Adam Gilchrist(can turn any match on its head.keeps ok.i know knott, rodney are there.but no 1's quite like him)
9.Wasim Akram(has there been a better swing bowler)
10.Shane Warne(the most magical spinner i can think of)
11.Harold Larwood(every team need atleast some1 with sheer pace.he is good enough.anyway, i think this position is most debatable)

all the above players are match-winner.they deliver when it matters.that 2 me is most important.besides ai also think this team is well-balanced.batting is very deep.pace ttack is good enough.only 1 spinner, but then most of the matches are played on those kind of pitches.
the only thing is that i've not thot at all about the fielding standard of this team.i am hard pressed by time

Good list, but i think Lara and Sobers should exchange places. A batsman of Lara's caliber should bat at Number 4, and Sobers is after all an allrounder. The greatest cricketer who ever existed, yes, but still and allrounder who can bat later in the order...

1. SUNIL MANOHAR GAVASKAR : The man with over 10k, who could take the shine off any new ball? Gavaskar... the quintessential opener. Would flourish in today's game as well... But to put things in perspective, i hate his commentary.

2. MATTHEW LAWRENCE HAYDEN : With Gavaskar at the other end, you need someone to score runs as well. Matthew Hayden is the perfect manifestation of the modern-day opener : Brash, quick and successful. Drool... Sunny and Matty as an opening pair...!!!!!

3. DONALD GEORGE BRADMAN : 99.94, Period.

4. RAHUL SHARATH DRAVID : Yes, i think he is a better batsman than Sachin Tendulkar. Especially under crises. What, you want proof? Remember the 148 at Headingley? The 270 at Rawalpindi? The 180 at Kolkata? The 233 at Adelaide? He has played more match-winning innings than any other Indian. Tendulkar is a legend, yes... but does he have a portfolio of innings like THAT?!

5. ISSAC VIVIAN ALEXANDER RICHARDS : This is the attack in the middle order. Viv could take the dent out of any attack... and imagine Dravid and Gavaskar grounding the opposition bowlers to dust... then, leaving Viv to smash the guts out of the hapless bowlers...

6. GARFIELD SOBERS : THE GREATEST CRICKETER THAT EVER EXISTED. Garry was a revelation... and could do anything on the cricket pitch. One feels that had he been asked to carry drinks, he would have made an art of that as well...

7. ADAM CRAIG GILCHRIST : Mind, i was in two minds whether to put Andrew Flower in this spot. But then i realised that none of the top 6 could be made to bat any lower down the order... But if i was asked to select the best batsman-keeper of all time, i would definitely opt for Flower. But in the context of this exercise, my vote goes for Gilly... a terrific striker of the ball... and in the unlikely situation that a team of this stature can find itself in the ditch at 50/6 or something, Gilly is the man who can get them out of it... And add to that, he is such an acrobatic keeper... From the day he got boo-ed when Ian Healy was kicked out of the team to make way for him... he's come a long way...

8. WASIM AKRAM : The greatest left-arm fast bowler ever. His guile and variation will complement the sheer pace of Marshall. Plus, when you have number 8's who can score 257 not outs...

9. SHANE KIETH WARNE : The man who brought the art of leg-spinning out of the deep dark canyons that it was dug into, and out into the open... and taking 600+ wickets in the process. If this man does not make it into the all-time XI, i don't know who will. Consider, he had to take wickets when his bowling mates were McGrath and Gillespie. I rest my case.

10. MUTTHIAH MURALITHARAN : What, you say? TWO SPINNERS? And why not? We should consider ourselves fortunate to have the two best spinners ever playing in the same era... but what if they played in the same team? The man who can ostensibly make the ball "spin on glass"... his variations ... some sort of Akramian incarnation in a spinner's body... A true genius... and to just picture him bowling alongside Warnie... wow !!!

11. MALCOLM MARSHALL : Undoubtedly... my favourite out of the West Indian pace battery... his career should have been much longer...

12th Man. JONATHAN NEIL RHODES : When you want a sub fielder, why not go for the very best? The only man to win a Man-Of-The-Match award for his fielding, Jonty was the way to go!

ChUcK
This will surely make a hell of a test team
but with gavaskar n dravid in top 4 i doubt if it can trouble the current aussie team in odi's...(may be the team will be stranded at like 250-260/2

Its better to burn out than fade away

Re: Cricket Dream Team (All Time) - 08-03-2006, 12:51 AM

lots of good test teams already posted, so i'd refrain from that.
here's my odi team :

openers :
sachin tendulkar [14146 runs @ 44.20 + 142 wks @ 43.61]
adam gilchrist (wk) [8025 rns @ 36.14 + 339 cts and 42 st]

middle-order :
ricky ponting [9020 rns @ 42.34]
viv richards [6721 rns @ 47.00 + 118 wks @ 35.83]
michael bevan [6912 rns @ 53.58]

all-rounders : [they often make the difference in odi matches]
imran khan (c) [3709 rns @ 33.41 + 182 wks @ 26.62 ]
kapil dev [3783 rns @ 23.79 + 253 wks @ 27.45]

bowlers :
wasim akram [3717 rns @ 16.51 + 502 wks @ 23.52]
shane warne [ 293 wks @ 25.73]
allan donald [ 272 wks @ 21.78]
glenn mcgrath [ 331 wks @ 22.43]

12th man :
who else, jonty rhodes. [donald , after finishing his spell could conveniently feign a back injury gettin jonty in the game ]

[mind u, the super sub rule is about to be scrapped soon; so we will be back to seeing the 12th man carrying drinks and doing the low-end job of only fielding;
however ; a gr8 super-sub could have been :
sanath jayasuriya [ 10625 runs @ 31.9 + 273 wks @ 36.82 ]

the bowling on this line-up makes me salivate [we indians are a bit short in that dept. , remember ? ] :

We can have Mcgrath and Wasim opening the attack. Mcgrath will do his stuff obviously; if Wasim cannot swing the new ball give it to Kapil / Imran. Atleast 1 of them will surely click.
When the batsmen think they have somehow survived the opening burst( with the score reading 50/2 or 64/3 after 15 overs ) ; bring on Donald.
If nothing, his sheer pace will scare the hell out of those poor souls at the crease.
From the other end bring on Warne. Just imagine the batsmen having to handle Warnie's wrong - uns , zooters and flippers from one end and fending off Donald's thunderbolts at the other.
If the batsmen miraculously surive till the slog overs , bring on the reverse - swinging duo of Wasim and Imran. A few Wasim yorkers should suffice. If need be, finish the tail off with Donald and Mcgrath.

WOOOOOO !!!
