La liga reporter reporting saturday's matches..:satisfie:

barcelona drew 2-2 away to recreativo...
equzzerro was playing aftr a long time...the whole match was almost a copy of previous matches with barcelona throwing away the lead twice despite having their 1st choice back line...

important thing was etoo scoring twice...he really looks like hes getting his touch back...the 2nd goal was a beauty..

& messi is back...came on as a sub for the last 10-12 mins....
barca have another match before united come calling...
their attacking has certainly improved a bit...but they have to get their defense in shape if thay have to stand a chance against united...

hope they dont get completely run over by ronaldo & company...etoo....krcic & messi in attack might pose some problems to united...
the league is out of reach for them now...& with ronaldinho's departure looking like a mere formality...i excpect one or two more to follow(deco gets my vote)...

valencia lost 1-2 to racing santander in the other match...
they're on 14th now...& i think villa will be contemplating leaving next season...

I know I'm 4 days late for this opinion, but whatever. We need to take a few things into account before concluding that Arsenal were beaten by teh ref:

1. Both the decisions need to be looked into isolation. The match and the referee were different. As a Liverpool fan, I agree that Kuyt's was a definite penalty. And Babel's was debatable, but still was a foul, and hence a penalty. But hear me out as to why it isn't unfair.

A foul is a foul anywhere on the ground. There are no special rules for penalties. Imagine if the same foul would've happened 20 yards away, in EUROPEAN games it's still a foul. It's not harsh, the defender came across Babel and Babel has all the right to go down (remember Chris Ronaldo going down so many times in the 18-yard box a couple of years ago).

2. Just because Hleb didn't get a penalty in the first leg, doesn't mean the ref should do something about it in the next game, football is a leveler, and Arsenal will get it's due sometime or the other. Over two legs, Arsenal were the better attacking team, and Liverpool defended in numbers, whenever they didn't, Arsenal scored.

3. Roma got a similar decision at OT, and they didn't score. So you still gotta take your chances, and the Reds did.

And last but certainly not the least, Wenger has got his own players to shout at... how could Adabeyor miss a sitter like that, what was he thinking.... just look at EL NINO, ONE CHANCE, thats it... thats all he took to change the course of the match and put Liverpool in the driving seat...

Unfortunately (and as a Liverpool fan it hurts me so bad to say), ManU look the strongest team in the UCL, and I think they would win it by beating L'pool in Moscow.

yeah...even commentators agree that a foul is a foul...whether in the penalty box or anywhere else on the ground...but honestly...how many times have you seen a ref interpreting it this way...
all referees are careful in giving it as a foul as a penalty has a lot more impact on the game as a simple foul...simply put...we will probably never see refs giving a penalty as easily as an everyday foul because of the higher stake involved...which is why many people thought that the penalty was harsh...

Interpretation is a problem. However, As long as a ref blows his whistle on a foul, we're OK. If you agree that Babel's was a foul, then leave it up to the ref to decide.

Remember Javier Masch being sent off at OT, Everybody sympathized with the ref for exercising his right of booking a player for descent. However, any dud who knows the tension on the pitch when so much more than 3 pts is at stake, would know that such events happen and should be taken into consideration before, let's see how to put it, putting the match to bed. Even now you see players like Rooney n JT bullying the refs, and nothing is done about it. Read Graham Poll's book "Seeing Red" to view the ref's perspective about such incidents. The FA wanted to prove a point, which they did during the North West Derby.

The moment refs will start thinking about the IMPACT on the game before giving the decision should never come. A decision should be made in complete isolation, and I agree that this is not an everyday case. Do you think it would have been a better decision if that event would've happened in the first minute of the game when Arsenal would've got time to come back into the match? Again, read Graham Poll's book to understand how a ref thinks.

Another decision that Refs don't take that often is yellow carding the players for play acting... a yellow card could potentially impact the game, but nobody cries foul when it's not given.
Because even a player knows that sometimes playacting comes into picture because refs don't give easy fouls in or out of the box, unless the game's Italian.

actually i managed to see some of the action in the first half... recreativo's 1st goal is a bit controversial... the ball stayed on the line and didn't cross the line... but the linesman confidently ruled it as a goal...

incident could have been avoided if the necessary technology was in place... imagine such a thing happening in the ECL finals where the stakes are high... baffles me why FIFA dropped plans to use goal line technology after 3 yrs of experimenting with it...

and i have to agree, the barca defence is not looking good...

Referees can be defended, but there is a line. The FA defends its refs whatever happens. Its only recently that we've seen a few ref's being suspended for a weekend. They too have a resposibility. A few missedfouls or penalties here and there is undertandable and can be attributed to human error. But on the whole some referee's go over the top.

I always feel that diving should be reviewed later by the FA and bans be handed out. Some blatant dives go unpunished.

As fas as the Squad God team goes, well I did not go through the rules, but I can confidently say i'll catch up. I have 2 United, 2 Liverpool, 2 Chelsea players all of who have to play. So if not this week, next week I research and put up my team. Watch out.

@Kris. the answer to the 3rd one you did not get was the Anfield Legend Ian rush. the rest were correct. congrats mate.

It's a marathon, not a sprint. Unless you're Man Utd, in which case you let the other teams get ahead and then start sprinting as they all fall apart.

Re: Football Club - 13-04-2008, 08:07 PM

I'd been away to Chandigarh, but was able to watch Birmingham-Everton yesterday. What a brilliant game! The scoreline of 1-1 didn't really do justice to either team. The goalies were stupendous. I haven't seen two goalies make such brilliant saves in a League match, ever! And of course, there were saves, shots hitting the woodwork, and lots of action. Kudos to Birmingham for rescuing a point. Honestly, I don't think they're bad enough to be relegated. I hope they pull through.

And of course, today's matches....Liverpool stay on course in their bid for 4th place, winning over the Rovers. But, the crunch match tonight is of course, the Gunners vs. the Red Devils. Chelsea would be fervently praying for United to draw/lose this game. (So would I - not because of any animosity towards United, but purely to see the race for the League get even tighter)
