.. i know what you mean! the kind of paper was rather different too. it used to be rather stiff, and the magazine had to be un-bent upon delivery.
one of the regular features that i can vaguely remember.. there used to be a robot of some sort. i think it was something similar to 'small wonder' on start-world. but i might be getting them mixed up.
we had a number of the MIR publications at home (we still have some). there were some amazing russian folk tales, some children stories ('when daddy was a small boy'

), some novels ('the amphibian'), and a number of popular science books.
*sigh* those were the days..
