Its an unfortunate thing to happen and its equally difficult to react appropriately in such a situtation, but after reading the description I too think the guy should have retaliated.

Anyways have forwarded this message to a couple of friends in the print media lets see if something works.

this is scary boss. only when u read such things or meet such ppl does the gravity of the situation hit u. only god knows how a man without money or political connection survives.
i mean heard of the police extorting money , but beating with lathis and all even before making demands in something im listening to for the first time.

I hope justice is done. I know it's difficult but if folks refuse to succumb to their demands, there's less chance that crimes like these will be tried again.

Have been hearing of a lot of such crimes lately in Bangalore. It's sad to see a nice city go this way. This place has seen too much money ; too fast.

Let's bring them to book!! - 05-10-2005, 11:53 AM

Good that Zango confirmed it!! I have recieved the mail from 2-3 friends already and had been developing an indifferent attitude to such forwards, but for Zango!!

The important question is: Knowing what our rights are. I guess Ramesh Ramanathan's Janagraha would be able to help this guy understand his rights and who to approach thru the maze-like channels. I am inspired by this guys efforts to forward this mail to a huge community. At the same time, I would really love to see these culprits coming to the book.

I have had one experience where the SHO himself asked for money in order to write an FIR for a snatched mobile. In fact, there is a well established nexus of some lawyers and Police Stations to get such FIR's written.

At another time, my brother (he was travelling on his bike) was stopped by a Policeman and was asked for license. Once he produced the license, he plainly alleged that the innocent boy was driving rash and didn't wear a helmet. At that time, my brother was a little smart and didn't shell out 200/- bucks that he was asking. He went to the police station with an influential friend and got his license returned.

And all this information is first hand!! I wish I also had the same responsiveness to respond to this.

even i have faced such a situation. at night time the behaviour of thugs is more predictable than police. ur phones and all the cash u have are snatched away .it is the height of helplesness.
the problem i guess is that in hindsight we all can think of some course of action. but in the heat of the moment we are usually clueless. and looking at what happened to our friend here, nothing cud have been done. imagine 4 5 ppl manhandling u, and with lathis and all.
must make sure that those ch0!I@$ are not spared. someone at pg bang must certainly have some contacts in police.

i didnt know it got published in TOI.. n i didnt know it was true...

but agin we cant do nething abt this.. our police has always been worse than the thugs...

yeah creating awareness of such incidents is a good thing.. so tht others can b careful..

but in the end one himself has 2 stand up n fight 4 himself...

I really don't know what people mean when they say that the person should have retaliated. You are being pummeled by 5-6 hefty policemen. You are sure not to recieve any help from the public. For all they know you could be a genuine criminal. So all you can do is pay up and get out of the place as soon as possible. Ok u can later get the nearest minister and make the TTE lose his job but I really don't think it is sensible to hit a policeman. You could get killed and then the policeman would get suspended. Bangalore will continue to see more of such crimes as the rich poor, native-outsider divide grows rapidly. And other than praying that you don't get caught there's really not much you can do.

After Receiving the forward and its contents I thought it was highly imaginary to be true. But now that it is true, one must be aware that he could have been the victim himself. But the guy did right not to retaliate at that very moment. Its hard to imagine the mental condition and responsiveness of the guy who had been beaten up by 5 constables blatanttly in the railway station and harassed in that manner.

This issues needs to be escalated in the larger interest of the people. We cannot sit back and thank god that it were not us.

The guy shud have retaliated ? I dont think he could have done much when there were 4-5 police wallahs beating him to pulp with lathis.

I can understand it when techies get waylaid by robbers but something like this being done by the cops is just indigestible. There is not much that we guys can do abt this other than going to the press and ensuring that everyone knows that something like this happened. And this IIML guy has done a pretty good job of it till now. The media should use this and put pressure on the cops/government to take action on the erring cops by posting updates on this case everyday in the newspapers and ensure that it stays fresh in public memory(IMO those cops shud be hung by their balls from a ceiling fan but if only wishes were horses......), but then, the press seems to be far more interested in Sania Mirza's T-shirts than in issues like these. Lets see if any daily covers this for more than 2-3 days.

This thread has been allowed hoping that someone who has the right contacts/position can come forward to help. Please do not use this to simply express outrage - there are problems in our society but the society is not devoid of positive aspects.

I simply did what I considered to be the right way to go about this - the original poster sent me a PM saying he did not want to trouble the concerned person by simply calling and verifying this information. I called up because I believe that someone here would be able to help if this was a genuine case. Let us not make a big issue out of this.
