The pressure built on d-day will be plain horrible, that's the reason why many studs would fail to crack it when the need arises.

Krishna, i can't comment on ur scores unless i know by how far u r missing the cut-offs. I repeat, my strategy would be : keep your weakest section in the middle, the easiest one to the end. Unless u have an overwhelming reason to go beyond the time limit in one section, i suggest equal apportioning of time across all sections. Why do u say u wouldn't want to attempt it before DI? have u tried it out?
yup tried it lot number of times but everytime instead of my quant scores increasing my di scores are decreasing

this time i attempted VA first and Di and then QA and my scores are 21 in VA ,,17 in DI ,and horribly 3 in QA

ok if i do only QA prep from now on is there a way that i increase my QA performance
QA prep what are all the things that i should handle from now on

Thank u for ur suggestions
Krishna

i'll have to know the cutoffs to see how well/badly u r doing at each of the sections. I can't make any comments by just having a look at the scores.

And then i remembered ... i had amnesia.

cutoffs are generally 15 -17 for VA and 11-12 for Di and 8-9 for QA

Re: CAT preparation strategy advice - 21-03-2008, 10:10 AM

well one of the strategies that has helped me a lot for RCs is that read the questions before reading the passage.
this gives an idea about what to ACTUALLY look n absorb in passage.
the go thru the whole passage very fast like just scanning it, n underline any relevant words/phrase u find especially if related to Qs u read. now u can easily search for various answers in short time.
Don't try to answer all Qs of a single RC. Its often time-consuming n dangerous..
attempt only those which r easy n sure-shots.
instead try to attempt 2-3 passages adopting the above technique.

hope this helps.

solve them not for the heck of solving them,
but to understand the principle involved. if on reading a question you know what to do. skip it. else do it. thats my principle. and usually level 2 questions come in cat and other papers. so chill if some question you cant do. and hey, thats why all the puys are here. shoot that question here.

read novels. they will increase your reading speed. read novels like speed reading. read one page then check time. for the next page try to beat that time. try it out.

Guys (and Gals).. My name is Puneet. I was a TIME student, then went on to become a TIME faculty for verbal & di, and presently doing my MBA from NITIE.

Thought I would give a few suggestions for ur cat prep....In case u r not taking the time test series, use the months range given in the brackets to prepare accordingly.

1. The first 6-8 mocks are for experimentation. Experiment. Try out new strategies.
dont bother much about ur percentiles and ranks.... my avg percentile during the first 6 mocks were 90-95. This usually happens in the months may to july. Enginners might be having their semester exams during this time. Dont bother prepping for cat too much during this time.

2. Mocks 8 - 12 (August) : access urself thoroughly. Find urself a preparation partner. this is very important. your preparation partner should be more or less at a similar level as u r or perhaps slightly higher. Benchmark urself against him.& both of u should motivate each other to up the level of performance. Start doing sectional tests also at this period of time.
My preparation partner was a guy called vinod(now in IIMB). His avg percentile during this mocks period was 99, mine 97.

3. Mocks 13-18. Takeoff time. Settle down on a strategy. Identify ur biggest strength. Also identify the section which u can do best under immense time pressure. In my case, i was very good at di, I also have a reading speed of around 850-900 words per minute. This reading speed ensured that I could finish all my RC's in about 12-13 minutes time & could devote more time to quant.

I used to start with DI(about 35 minutes, as it was a strong section), then went to quant, spent around 45- 50 minutes over there, then went to verbal for 30 minutes. Used up the remaining time to go back to any section i wanted to maximise else used to do some checking the omr for errors in marking( In th actual CAT, I spent the last 5 minutes checking the OMR for markings).

Also, the last 15 days b4 CAT, preferably take a leave from work/college & keep urself focussed on the job at hand. Motivate urself and ur preparation partner.

Vinod(my prep partner) got 99.34 percentile in CAT 2004.
He got calls from IIMb & IIMc. Converted & joined IIMB.

I got 99.23 percentile in CAT 2004. .DI - 89.09.( mild screw up in my strongest section.... what an irony...) Quant - 97.63... Verbal 99.01.
Got AIR 138 in JMET 2004

Calls from MDI,NITIE, SJMSOM IITB, DMS IITD and VGSOM IITKGP.

Converted SJMSOM IITB and NITIE. Joined NITIE.

Both Vonod & myself are freshers from R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore.

Hope this will be useful to all u CAT 2005 takers. Mail me or PM me for any clarifications.
Pagalguy rules.

Cheers

Puneet
