iam studying in TIME. took advice from plenty of alumni of IIMs. Take my word. I might not have topped TNPCEE or even come close to it, but TIME is the best in Chennai.

dude

CL is relatively new to chennai. TIME is tried and tested and is very good seriously. I actually think that joining TIME was one of the best decisons i've made and Iam not kidding. Now, I dont want to sound as if iam advertising for TIME, but i too was in the same dilemma early this year. I mailed quite a few guys from IIMs from chennai and/or South India. The answer i got from them was "Dont waste time comparing instis,TIME is easily the best. Join and U wont regret it" . It is actually true. I've never regretted it. Take my word on this one.

TIME costs some 14xxx close to 15000. CL is slightly lesser but seriously, this should not be a factor. Ascent is the cheapest at 9500, but my money is on TIME.the rest is up to u.

Hi Kartik,

Please find my answers below.

1 First of all u dint mention ur college.Does college really matter.I m from a good college indeed (Anna University, chennai consistently ranked in top 10) and I have a decent GPA of 8.85 till now.will this be an advantage. Moreover I ve other achievements like topping my state in entrance exam of my state and board exam duing my 12th but otherthan this I dont have any special merit in other extracurriculars like quizzing. but i heard IIM s prefer quizzers. Is that true.Do they look for any special leaderships undertaken coz I dont have any significant things

I m from PEC, Chandigarh. Buddy, ur college & ur CGPA is definitely an advantage but if you dont have them, it doesnt make much of a difference. i mean that u can make up for that thro ur %ile & GD/PI. even if u have good acads, u have to perform well in CAT as well as ur GD/PI. ur other achievments also count but at the same time, having them is neither sufficient nor necessary for getting into IIMs.

and this talk about IIMs preferring quizzers is all crap. cmon yaar, they want to make you managers & not send you to some quizzing contest or s'thing. forget about all this crap & think about doing well in CAT & GD/PI.

2 Secondly will softwares like RocketReader be of any use in speed reading.I find mine a little poor coz I dint read any novel kind of stuff till date. What is the remedy then for improving vocabulary too.

i dont know about rocket reader or a'thing as i didnt use any of the reading softwares. dont worry about the novels also. just read the newspaper daily(need nto be HINDU, even TOI is fine. it wud b gud if u can read ET).

for improving vocab, start reading some good books. if u cant do that, simply mug up as many words as possible. start with the high-frequency list for GRE given in Baron's.
3 About sectional cutoffs : how much should one need 4 getting calls from top IIM s.( A in particular) also tell the overall cutoff

this cut-off varies from year to year. and, above all, u might not have the same sections as we people had. i mean dont be so rigid in ur approach. be prepared for some changes in ur CAT paper. but, if the paper is on expected terms, 26-27 in english, 20-22 in DI & 14-15 in quant shud see u thro'. if u get these marks u will have a total of 64-65. that is more than enuff.

but please dont start thinking about these things now. its too early for that. and, remember, this is all based on assumptions. there is no concrete data available for this.

4 kindly tell me how many qustions have to be answered correctly for getting those sectional cut off s and the overall score

it is ASSUMED that they have a -ve marking of .33 for every wrong ans. u can work out the nof attempts based on the no of questions u attempt correctly. please dont waste ur time & energy on this. concentrate on other things. let the people who prepare CAT do this. it is their job & they r paid for it.

5 i find it difficult in comprehending editorials.what should I do.

dont worry. keep on reading them. u will start comprehending them.

A bridge course in economics??? If so kindly mention some source of tutorials in economics.

why do u need that? if u r from a non-eco b'groud, they wont ask u bout it. even if they do, u can simply say that its not my field. still if u want it, start watching CNBC. u can also check out http://www.economictimes.com/guide/etclass/etclass.htm

(Sorry 4 disturbing u with a big mail.These ar the Q s I wanted answers for nearly 5 months)

never mind. u can ask watever u want. i'll b more than happy to answer that.

Thanks in advance

All the Best!!!
luv and regards
Kartik C

Man, what uve heard is right. I too will suggest joining classes if u r a fresher. The level of perfection that cat requires can be obtained only if u've attended coaching classes atleast once in ur life. I am no expert. But i have found coaching classes extremely helpful for my preparation. So much so that i will say that i am yet to feel that i have wasted time by attending a class. Thats my take on it. Unless u r extra-ordinarily talented, join coaching class. even if u r extra-ordinarily talented, coaching class will only increase the prob of success even if it is only marginal. so think about it.
