Hi Everybody - 17-04-2005, 11:21 AM

Hey Guys,

First of all my introduction.
I am a 2003 Engg passout and am working for a s/w company in Mumbai.

I gave CAT 2004 with 95+ Percentile, got a big shock.
But did not really prepare hard or with any stategy, just took the TIME material
and did some part of it.

But this time I want to start early(I know I am already late by ur standards)

I have started my so called preparation 1 month ago and am I have concluded that
I can spend atmost 12-13 hrs a week from here on(5 hrs on weekdays + 8 hrs on weekends)
for my prep.

Performance wise in last CAT, I had a terrible score in VA, 79+ percentile.

Can somebody give me some tips of how to go abt it this time around ?

I want to know whether reading the Newspaper really works that well.
Or I shud do something differently.

I am not a voracious reader but I do read non-fiction books .

I need a real lift in Va .
Is there someone jo "Mujhe ko bhi Lift kara the "

hii

This year's CAT DI was shady..
Some of my observations from my CAT debacle

1. CAT 2004 was for those who had no preparation and reasonable IQ

2.The final calls to freshers were given to Acad heavy guys.

3.Many ppl got gud QA,gud Verbal but screwed up DI.DI was most dreaded this year.

4.DI didnt have much calculations

So my weekly plan wud be sumthing like this

May-July
VA
Read like crazy...Order three newspapers..Read mags like Frontline (hardcore stuff)..Its painful to read so much stuff but believe me it becomes easier by the day. This will ensure a RC is not a concern
DI
Solve simple puzzles.Really speaking one cant do much about it ..It wud be more advisable to spend time trying(learning)to be alert.Using mind more than paper.
QA
Check out the weaknesses like for me Perm and Comb,probablity..Take up a basic book on this and build a solid foundation

July-October
I have not planned

October to November
It will be different from wat I do in July-October

but most among mankind know it not

Free stuff on the net as usual Sucks big time..
Its usual fart Peter Shephard puts...he is a generalist ...He cogs it from many sources ...I think a better book wud be the one by norman Lewis on "reading" named How to improve Reading Speed

BTW what is YG...

Take care!
give these topics 2 full days...and then see,if u still dont improve, chuck them.unless ur aiming for close to 100 percentile or sumthn, not knowing a few topics doesnt matter.while asking u to working extra hard on ur weak points,i meant tht u shud work hard on ur weak section.and yaa, after taking every mock test, analyse it by making another test outta it,doing all the questions u dint attempt in a fixed time.eg.if u attempt 90/150 questions in a mock in 2 hours, try doing the remaining 60 in 80 mins...this will really help u in getting aquainted wid all kinds of problems.

For heaven sake plz dont skip the topics..We have loads of time to build on funda.I took CAT last time 99.31% got 3 calls +1 MDI..cudnt convert even a single one of them(due to ultra high PI technical questions!!..atleast too tuf for me).

I never got above 90% in simcats..my first simcat % was 81.xx%...I never crossed 50s in total.Gave CAT as I had already filled up the forms ..Lady luck favored me..got 99.31%..the unexpected..I hd choosed the easy questions alone..never wasted time on others..I think accuracy helped me on the C-day unlike the other simcats..
During simcats I wud attempt 60+ quest and get only 40-45 correct (so net score 30
+) in MCTs I attempt 70+ and get 50-55 correct (so net score 40+)..

but on C-day I attmpted for 28 marks in verbal..got arnd 16 marks right(?)..
attempted for 20 marks in DI(part A alone..didnt tuch part B)..got 19 correct(?) (99.31% eventhugh I such at all these sections)..attempted 25 marks in quants got 22-23 marks right(?)...almost 95+% accuracy except for verbal..(I usually get single digit scores in Verbal)..

DONT SKIP THE FUNDAmentals..CAT is abt choosing the easy ones..wht if u get 2-3 easy ones in the topic u skip..U loose..1-2 marks make a big difference!!ask ppl who had been consitently trying to get inside the 99+%..
We have enuf time for fundas ..atleast go thru the same boring stuff again and again till June..No Pain..No gain..
I m a poor reader..I am checking out for nice books in the Chit chat books thread and trying to complete a book/ a week..
Once the fundas are over by June..wht else other thn Tests...So sweat it pal...The rewards r high(if u r keen to make it to the IIMs)

PS:sorry to irritate u by saying tht I m also poor in Prob and Perm,combi..I m working on it..I will atleast get myself to be an average if not good in this section...check out the quants thread..It is a Treasure house!!!

TO the infy joining ppl..I m joining Infy in sept

thts y i said...give it 2 days...but dont worry unnecessarily over it!more than practicing individual i topics,i guess its the art of spotting easy questions which can get u thru...and its very important to practice it a lot!
