well, i guess all of us have had a similar experience at some point during our GD-PIs. I had 3 calls, C,L,K and FMS.
K- absolutely horrible interview but a good GD. result - waitlisted at K
C - very average GD and less than average PI. result - PGDCM offer.
FMS - average GD and 'cool' PI. result - name there in the first list itslef.
L - 'cool' GD. very 'cool' PI. result - got the boot.
CAT %tile - 99.39 (dont remember the break-up)

apart from the letting-our-guard-down thingie, another important factor at play here might be our %tiles. how? the written test + GD-PI process is there to judge us. now if the interviewer is not putting much of an effort in judging us in the GD-PI (i am assuming in a stress interview, the interviewer is also a bit stressed, hence he/she is putting in some effort into the process), he/she is going to judge us based on the only other criteria left, which is our %tiles. if we are lacking in that dept, then may be we get the boot.

just my two pence,

krishnendu.

There are a few reasons why people do not get in after a 'COOL' interview as well
They are
The interview weightage maybe low so that is not an influencing factor
The test score is really low and you probably require a great interview to get through
The Interview is subjective though u would have answered everything ..The panelists may not be happy with your attitude..
The Cool interviews are done to see how u behave when off guard..so maybe u may not have noticed a slip up here or there

Personally I too had cool interviews at XLRI and IIFT ..
got Chucked out of both ..XLRI ..I really cant understand why
IIFT Becoz my score was really low

I had really bad interviews from my point of view in IIM B and IIM L
Converted both ...
So I feel we can only have a feel of the interview...becoz only if we record the interview and watch it later..would be really be able to judge our interview ourselves

dude , how did u know your IIFT score ? even if i believe that score is a major factor . how does it account for my XLRI failure. XAT %ile - 99.80 .
also i would think that my CAT %ile was not so low either - 99.53 . so surely percentile is not the deciding factor here .
it almost seems as if they are not interested in me . now why would they think like that . or is it bcoz i have a naturally smiley face so they might think i'm taking it lightly .
i wonder if smiling in the interview is considered offending by the interviewers .

cool vs stress interview - 16-04-2005, 10:25 AM

hi frens
so far i hv given a few intvws
sum for job n rest for b school admission..............

in first ever intvw for a bank job ( m a tecchie) at IIM L
i was pretty tense jus coz it was in iiml n taken by iim proffs
inspite of all my efforts cudnt make myself smile consistently......
so it started with stress but went so smooth dat i forgot i m being interviwed for a while
i was tested on watever i had ritten in my resume apart frm sum ques i cudnt hv even dream of........
wen it was over i thot my chances are nill.......
but i got in............
again for a techie job in the comp i m workin in at present( the 3rd best employer in india) the interview was a lill strange ...tey keet bashing me thruout for watever i had done so far in my life
i was weak in my knees once they srated asking tech things .........
messed it up like hell but still got in ............
frm these 2 exp i realised dat ......... most of the time the panel has an initial inpression abt u ( depending upon ur acads...,marks /%ile in written exams and ofcourse ur hobbies and ex -cu) b4 u appear 4 being interviewd ...........
now wherther the intvw is cool or stressful u need to live up to and add on the initial /tentative impression they have abt u
if u succeed in dis and have a good back up ( as mentioned by rahul) of marks/%ile ur chances are gud
one more thing is ther........... wen the intvw is stressful we are quite honest in order to avoid any further embarassment while wen its goin cool we may hv a tendecy to exaggarate .........so dis also may make a diff
but in the end the result matters and like bollywood flicks ther is no sure shot formula which wd click .........lets keep giving interviews and see which one hit the box(panel in dis case) office
regards

I know my IIFT score was low becoz I attempted only about 90 questions that too in a lazy manner and then guessed the rest ..becoz I found it tough to crack

Attempted all 196 questions in IIFT ..So was 100 percent sure of not making it....was suprised when I got a call...
But since IIFT hasnt sprung any suprises becoz all people with good interviews have gotten thru..I m ASSUMING it s my low score that got me out .
Anyways me in the same boat I had 99.8 for XL they didnt take me after a good interview
also the case with Tdubey ..And Atulya both High percentilers
and all three of us converted atleast 5 of our 6 IIM calls...so there has to be a flaw in selection process of XLRI(My personal opinion)

FMS I wont say I deserved to get in ..but they should give us 15 mins of interview time
How can u judge a guy in 5 mins ...esp given that the GD s are mostly Fish Markets
It s totally unfair ..otherwise they should have one centre in the south ..I feel so sorry after spending 15000 rupees............That they didnt give a chance to prove myself..I wouldnt have felt bad if I had screwed up ..but they didnt give me a chance to screw up

To add some more about "cool" interviews. The standard student perception is that cool Pi's and good Pi's are one and the same. This is not necessarily the same. The above statement was made by a panelist in my IIML interview so I'm guessing its accurate!

(the rest of the post are my opinions strictly) Even in a cool interview, they are tryin to judge whether u fit in with their batch profile/culture or not. N since we never know what exactly they're looking for, even after coming out of a cool PI where one appears to have answered most of the questions, we would still not prove that our personality/profile fits with what they're looking for, and hence the rejection.
So XLRI must have been looking for some really unique batch profile, which is why the high %ilers might have missed out. (there's no rule that if one fits in with iim's requirements, he would fit in with the requirements of every other school as well). Thats the only logical explanation.

<snip>
i totally agree with this n feel that in case of the iim's CAT score is most important and in the end decides whether u get in or not irrespective of ur performance

ps: i was with u during the iimB gd pi - i feel our GD was pretty good and my interview was super cool ( it lasted for 30 min) - but i didnt make it - even to the wait list.... CAT score is the only thing i can blame.
