To be or not to be,help me guys... - 07-04-2005, 08:46 PM

Starting this thread as i need advice from the elders here as well as the risk takers.First let me put my profile ,
10th-79.6 (ICSE)
12th- 69.2(ISC)

B.Tech from NIT calicut EEE 2003 66.5%

Been workin for a software firm ,total exp 20 months as of today.

Extra Curri- Thats what i have been doing all my life.
state level badminton player.
member of india's first student quality circle and participated in ICQCC'95 at yokohama, japan.
have performed on AIR many times, have won awards in debates, skits, dramas etc etc.
was jr cult secy in college

gave CAT'2002 got 93 percentile with no prep.cleared MICA but did not join.
gave CAT '2004 with solid prep but had 2 worst hours and ended up with 89 percentile.

frankly,i dont like my software job.my heart is not into it.am waiting for my bond to expire in september.thats when the time comes to make a decision.with my work profile i can easily get a software job with better salary and location preference.
I am confused with these 2 options,
1>keep working and give cat'2005.not sure will be able to takeout time for CAT prep.
2>quit my job, give full time to CAT prep and writing a book(????..hehe) .
but catch is that will i be able to justify my break from a regular work ex to taking off so that i can write a book and prepare for CAT?? can i sell that or better say, will the institutes and panel buy it?
can the elders or other PGites tell me,have people with risk taking profiles cracked IIMs...or can contribute succes stories if they know any cases.
i do not have great acads, and am only interested in doing MBA in marketing, HR or advertising.cos there my heart lies...
please help guys..
Me.

Hmm well if you see you wrote ke solid preparation but 2 worst hours.. now do you givea lot of importance to taking out time for CAT preparation ?

But could you kindly elaborate about what book ? Plain curious

thanks pooza and ashish.
pooza,as for ur queries, cant disclose the idea here, its still in nascent stage .catch me on Y! and will tell u.the id is same as this one.
as far as my experience,i guess even if u have solid prep last year,CAT requires start from scratch.of course fundamentals etc remain the same, but its also a matter of practice and peaking at the right time.and i cant take chances this year.
and am still not perfect, right now i have identified my weaknesses and going to leave no stone unturned.
and also its matter of biding my time and being patient.

I think, you can leave your job after your bond expires.
And instead of taking a full fledged drop, try to find a chore.
Anything that doesn't require a lot of your time (may be marketing for banks) and join a tutorial at the same time (infact right from this moment onwards). This will be really helpful for you in maintaining regularity with your studies.
In case you are not sure, whether you want to, or could get, any other job, then I would say that you apply for a job in some s/w company.
What would you get from it?
leave your current job after lets say september. Get yourself selected in another job before that and just get your joining date delayed by 2-3 months (means, till end of november).
So you'll be getting 2 months of complete preparation time.
Simply join new after that and you are through.
How do you like it????
Best of luck...

If not us, who? If not now, when?

Yeah I know what you mean man. I too had a higher percentile in CAT last year without much preparation. THis year was ....... well let it be. Man if you so interested in advertising why didnt you try out for MICA this year. I mean are you only looking at the top schools? Why dont you try taking up another job. Maybe it will pay less but...... if you enjoy it then you would be happier for a while till you got into a B-school. But you need to be willing to settle for a little less for a while. Anyways you do sound really frustrated in your current situation.

Dude you say that you dont like your job but then when your bond expires you would be looking at another "better" software job. WHat is the deal with this?
Your extracurrics are good.
All the best man!!

Hey estranged_gnrs... ..buddy, I can so relate with you but only in terms of your problems and not the scores or extra ciricc. activ. ....

But I can tell what I intend to do now, and what I feel you should try to.....me too under a bond in a s/w firm.. ..which expires in Nov. and me too not looking fwd to continue here....

First..I can suggest that you take up classes for the prep. coz even if u managed to get a good score last time, this time taking time out with job going parallel, mite affect ur prep..which is something one cannot afford to do... ...me to signing up......that way, by default u'll put in a good amnt of time studying.....but rem. this is only a suggestion... ... u may manage to get the studies done properly by urself too....

Secondly, as u've already mentioned that you are very confident abt getting a 2nd job in another s/w c/o....u mite as well quit after you bond expires and take a 2-3 month break till CAT's over.....believe me, after 24-25 months of wrok-ex, u REALLY need a break....hopefully this shud not be an issue at the intrvw stage....U tell them the truth, u needed a break and also wanted to study for CAT...

Third....after the job break once u feel like getting back to working, can take a gamble like mentioned by another PGite (sorry didnot rem. to check his/her name) by pursuing a job in a non-techie sector...whichever interests you......and will def. help u out with ur intrvw....

Lets hope I was of some help to you in making up your mind reg. your future plans......

Do let us all know what you finally decide....All the best man....

Keep Rocking....

OM MBA NAMAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi estranged_gnrs,
me got thru IIM B/C also. so now i can advise u more strongly .let me share my observations regarding full time preperation for CAT. i understand that u already did CAT prep twice. so u are not a newbeei anymore. u know whaz the syllabus, kind of questions and the standard of questions by now. Now, remember that CAT preperation comes in 2 stages.

1)LEARNING FUNDAS OF QUANT AND LOGIC etc
2) EXAM PERFORMANCE = APPLYING RIGHT STRATEGY AND CHOOSING RIGHT QUESTIONS TO SOLVE.

believe me i lost out on CAT in first attempt only because of the second part above. the more u are good at choosing right questions, the less u depend on the first part above . if u take out any of ur previos mock paper and analyse whereu got ur score from, its mostly from SILLY ,DUMB QUESTIONS which u an solve anyday.
SO IT ALL COMES DOWN TO SELECTION OF RIGHT QUESTIONS. that means it can be practised only through MOCK EXAMS every week. SO ITS NOT ABT SITTING AT HOME AND LEARNING MORE NEW FUNDAS. (believe me i still donot know the properties of parallelogram fundae even after cracking CAT. )

All this post to tell u that CAT score doesnot really depend on the TIMESCALE. neverthless, i feel u can give up the job so that u can have more peace of mind ,doing ur preperation. but expect nothing more from the free time u are going to get. concentrate on mock cats and improve ur performance week by week. please keep these in mind and go ahead for CAT 2005!. ATB.

Argue for your limitations and you get to keep them!!.

hey estranged....first of all the same query as someone else earlier....why didn't u join MICA??....its one of the best institutes in India....and secondly i quite agree with sriks....i would suggest that u join the weekend batch of some coaching classes....it would be more than enough....and yah....give mock papers and analyse them for an hour....and u'll sail thru....u already have score fairly decent percentile the last 2 times....so it should be a cakewalk for u....plus u'r work ex, u'r extra curricular would make sure u sail thru and interview....gl
