Couldn't tame the CAT ???? - 19-04-2003, 11:52 AM

This message goes exclusively for Ravi. But I would be glad if it helps many others who have not been able to tame the Biggest of all small animals -> The CAT.

I don¡¦t want to start off by sympathizing, nor empathizing, at your state, and pls don¡¦t let anyone do that either. You are not in a state that needs sympathy. Coz God gave you an opportunity to ask yourself what you really want from life? (and pls no interview answers here )

Lets say a person has attempted CAT for three times, and is still as far away from IIM as a person who has never attempted CAT. I suppose this is what he should be going through ¡§I have tried three times and still I am not able to make it ƒ¼ I cant wait any longer. I had it, CAT is nor for me, if I couldn¡¦t make it now, things may not change next year too¡¨

I may be wrong here, but this is what I was going through when my second attempt at CAT resulted in no calls!! I had a good academic background, good grades, yet I couldn¡¦t shine on that single one day! Why????

Look at people who clear CAT at the first attempt, aren¡¦t they lucky to have saved so many years in life preparing for CAT?
Then there are those, who make it in second attempt, life gave them an opportunity to outshine with their next strike. They are the true winners, they learn from their mistakes.
Then there are those who do not make it even after the third attempt !! Life is really harsh with them, there is nothing left for them!!!

Bullshit!!

Coz there are people who make it in 4th attempt (yours truly) and what have I lost ¡V 4 yrs in preparation for CAT ??.
Naaah!!
I believe things even out in the long run. These four attempts have taught me something that will definitely pay off, and it does every day!!!

A little about me, hope that would credence to what I have said till now
Electronics Engineer (top 3 in class).
Firs attempt at CAT ¡V 4 calls, converted Indore, didn¡¦t go for it for personal reasons.
Second attempt ¡V 0 calls
Third attempt ¡V 0 calls
Fourth Attempt ¡V 5 calls, converted all.
(Effects of Newton¡¦s First Law - I still need to convince myself that this December I need not take CAT )

Does this motivate you? So what do you think you want to do now?
Do you want to go back to your books and start preparing for CAT 2003? Well this is what you have been doing for the past two year right?

I hope not, coz that is what would make the difference.
Do you think you need to prepare for CAT at all? You have done it so many times and am sure you are above many?
Would you like to know how many days I prepared for CAT this year ?
2 weeks, and that too without taking any holidays (I used to be at home for 15 days before CAT during my Second and third attempt)
Number of tests I took (around six)
My percentile ¡V 99.89 (Calls A,B,C,I and K)

The reason I am saying this is, since you have already taken CAT and got calls(for Ravi), you know that you have passed the acid test, what you now need to do is work upon yourself.
Forget CAT, ask yourself do you really want to do an MBA, and where do you want to limit yourself to (only IIMs ? this is what was my aim). Once you are sure that you want an MBA, think about CAT only when you have to fill in the form (July) and forget about it till say September-October (or as your preference is)
So what do you do for rest of your time? I am sure you had written the alternative career path in your interview forms (or at least the career goal response).
Lets assume that there is nothing like an IIM or for that matter even an MBA
Then what would you do? The moment you find an answer, start doing that!!
Concentrate on your job and work well there, be true to your alternative career path.
If you look at life with a broader vision you will see this so called failure is nothing, look at people who have no jobs!!! Aren¡¦t you lucky?

Let MBA be just what it is, a means to an end and not an end in itself and the moment you do that my friend, things will fall in place!

I hope I have not disappointed you in any manner, but this is what helped me come a long way ahead from where I was four years back !!

Hope it helps everyone if not, well I shall be happy coz I am sure it would set a few heads thinking.

Couldn't tame the CAT ???? - 19-04-2003, 01:14 PM

hi guys
i take this opportunity to ask something which i avoided.
i also tried thrice. this year i had k call. couldn't convert. i have got through iit-kharagpur and have decided to go. I feel no regrets. reason is i feel it is a decent school. I know i am good and i believe iit will give me the opportunity.
But sometimes i still ask myself, should i try once more ?
i work with my dad. it's a good place to be but not really where i see myself ? this lead me to decide i should go.
what do u think guys ?

Totally agree with finallythrough...infact when i checked the gd/pi results on iimk site(they were the first one to come out) i saw a ding..thats when i decided that i m gonna rethink my strategy for cat 2003...even took out the vocab book...( i assumed that i ll be dinged at all other iims) but got 5 gd/pi calls....finally joining c....
so the point is...cat or iim is not the end of life...for those who got through its another challange to do good..for those who didnt a challange to make through next year...no need to get dissaspointed...
have faith in urself..
cheers

FinallyThrough, That was one inspirational post. But I have to admit I am foxed by your preparations. Just 15 days ??? I'd love to have some further insight into your preparations and what the heck was it that was so different from all the other attempts.

There is no question that the CAT is not the end of life, but you seem to have bounced with a stunning performance after 2 years of nil calls and I'm sure everyone would love to know what clicked this time around.. or how did you make things happen.

Warm Regards,

Thanks FinallyThrough for such a post..
u really define perserverence..
your post stimulates a lot of thoughts going around in my mind... i personally have been wundering abt wat next after drawing nil in my second att at cat.. plus been talking to a lot of ppl .. ppl who have calls .. ppl who dont have calls..
there are umpteen threads on PG itself asking for advice whether to join, etc..

so where it is very difficult to be objective in making a statement as these decisions are really dependent a lot on personal situations,
u have provided one helluva example to the forumians..
deserve a pat for that ..

& definitely as PG said.. we would like to have more insights on your cat preparations .. 15 days.. just 6 tests.. 5 final calls .. phew

wanna shed more light on this ?

"Do you like storms?"
"Hell no.. they scare the crap out of me"
"Then why do you always go sailing when the winds are at their worst?"
"To be free of crap"

whatever

As for me , this is my first and the only attempt at CAT (or any other MAT for that matter ) I would have to go to the best option available to me by this time next year.
Lets see what is in the destiny's store for me.

Thanks for the PAT on the back, doesn’t hurt to get a few.

I would like to share how I went about the 15 day CAT prep but please take this with caution coz how much one needs to prepare totally depends on one’s current state. The point that I wanted to emphasize in my earlier post was that there was nothing wrong with my preparation, I used to be in the top 10 of SIMCATs, but things used to be different on the D-Day.

I am not sure which of the following worked for me
1) My center was not King George, Mumbai (that center sucks, as there is always a wedding on the CAT day – my 2nd and 3rd attempt were at this very un-auspicious location)
2) Cat was in November and not December.

Well, as far as the preparation, it followed the following
1) Joined Time Mock Cat Series, took the first three tests and used to be in the top 40 their (I dint prepare much yet managed good rank coz generally 60% of competition at this time is new to CAT and hence it was easier to be in top 40)
2) Two weeks before CAT I started visiting Time Center for tests again (so that adds two more tests – good rank here too)
3) I brushed maths concepts in the last 10 days and took one test on 22nd and the last one on 23rd (Scored well here too)
(So in all 7 tests, sorry for the wrong number initially)

Disclaimer :- guys n gals, please do not reason any logic from the above. It just worked for me and has a lot of subjective elements. The message I wanted to convey was more from the point of thinking about your strategy, its very personal. CAT needs hard work, but that’s true for your first or max second CAT attempt(s), after that its pure smart work, a customized plan that is tailored to meet your needs.

Hope this helps.

Hey "FinallyThrough" - Congrats ...
I have a similar story to tell .. which has now become part of our college folk-lore
This "freaky" senior of mine frm b'lore got into IIM-A in his final yr. Couldn't join bcoz of Managalore Univ. final sem schedules for comp.scis- so seat stood forfeited -that was CAT 99 and he wrote CAt '02 with me - saying he isn't even thinking of any other institutes - and also his tech job pays him well -I have to hear the latest from him abt this years result - hope he has made it - So there u go ... Its all within ur reach .... The question is whether u choose to wait/in case u hv backup options or decide to review ur options ... Hope this helps CAT - veterans
And 'bucket' - (my senior ) if u read this post - jst tell me what haapnd this time around - so that I can continue with the revised new-edition of folk-lore
