Hey

If u r genuinely interested in doing HR then only go for it but only from XL & TISS only otherwise its not worth it.

HR ppl dont have much growth options in most of firms,if u r not from gud college it becomes more difficult to do some real gud stuff.
Rest these kind of decisions are always subjective,in any case just follow ur hrt.
bye all the best

engineer and HR...nah...never..that's the worst thing an engineer can do.......it's an ultimate thankless job...and HR persons are always pilloried and castigated by everyone everytime.....being an engineer one deserves something better than this sh**....one last question has anyone heard of a HR person rising to the post of MD or CEO

me too in a dilemma - 30-03-2005, 06:09 PM

Me got final admission into PMIR XLRI
I am a fresher from IIT Madras
Didnt think much when I was applying to XLRI...thought that I will make it to IIMs but unfortunately cud not make it..
Now in a dilemma as to join or not.
If I look only at the monetary aspects then I suppose I shud join XLRI (av salary this year is 7.5 lacs )when comparing with the 4lac/annum (in two years may grow to max of 6 lacs) software job I have got thru campus placement

Ppl say if u have enthu in HR then go for XLRI...the point is I dont know much about HR or any other specialisation apart from the things read in magzines etc.

If I pack XLRI then the decision is sound only if I make it to three institues IIM A,B and C.

Also how does work exp in software ..compare to that in some proper management firm

Please help

hi guys,

me too in same boat.

have cleared xl-hr, and am seriously considering joining, though am an engineer and have iim calls.

have always been interested in dealing with ppl, and have held various posts in school and college, and i believe hr would bring my core strengths into play.

at the end of the day, i believe one should know one's strengths, and take a course accordingly.

ciao

Hi,
First a bit about me:

Final year Electronics and Comm Engg at Jamia Millia Islamia.
CAT :98.35 No IIM calls
XAT: 99.64
Decent acads and extra currics.

Well, I have a final call from XLRI PM-IR and from MDI PGP-M. I applied to the flagship programes of both the institutes. I have no incination towards HR whatsoever. I'm thinking of doing a Finance/Systems dual.

Whatever I do, systems just has to be a part of it. And from what I hear, systems at XLRI aint that good. They have trouble getting a batch of 15 students for systems also at times. I don't have that option anyways in case I join XLRI....

So at the moment I'm a bit confused (not a lot though).....I've also heard that engg+HR isn't the best combination. But what about engg+HR from XLRI. Would that be greater than engg+Fin/sys from MDI? That is the million dollar question....

There are 10 kinds of people, those who can read binary and those who can't.

There is nothing wrong in engineers pursuing an HR major, provided ofcourse that you have the commitment and the aptitude to excel in the field!

Obviously XLRI and TISS are the best in the country, but HR as career is really taking off at IIMK as well (donno abt the other IIMs!).

This year during final placements, the number of HR jobs on offer far outnumbered the HR majors sitting for placements!! Out of a batch of 120, about 10% were HR majors, most of them were engineers and landed plum HR jobs with with IBM, HP, Aditya Birla Group, ICICI Onesource etc etc at the same payscales as anyone else. Companies actually wanted to see more HR majors, but there weren't any available!

HTH.
