The way you are calculating is all wrong whatever assumptions you make bout the dimensions of the plane cause the ping pong balls being spheres will have to placed in such a way such that space will remain trapped in between...

now you have to choose whether you wanaa go in for Cubic Close packing or Hexagonal Close packing ,do some more googling and you will find which of these give the highest packing fraction use that calculate the no of spheres in 1 unit cube, then the vol of that cube ant then you can divide the volume of the plane by the vol of cubes to get total no of cubes,u will know no of ping pong balls in 1 cube, volia u get the no of ping pong balls.
You are right... but I think that you have not gone through my post...

assume that it fits into a cube of 2r side (40 mm here). Then it occupies 4/3*pi*r3/(2r)3 ~ .5 of the space = half the space.
therefore it is safe to assume that the total volume of the TT balls fitting in the space is half of the total vol of the plane.

I did but you have assumed the no of balls in 1 cube not the way you stack them...

ABABAB or ABCABCABC...

the way you stack them determines the packing ratio......

In the most optimum packing you can pack 74% of the space and not 50% as you have taken hence the number of balls will increase...

Will we be again having "global gyan" people on campus???
nahinnn......

but as mentioned by Ravi, these are slingshot questions to throw you off-balance and test you your disaster recovery management tactics. For example, I know of a person last year, who was asked - How much money would you take to climb Mt. Everest?

- Nil.

Hi guys
Had the K interview in Mumbai today. Was personally pretty bad for me but the questions themselves were not very difficult.
My background:

electrical engineering. Good acads. 6 months VLSI experience.

Here's how it went.
GD:
Those who dream of rising higher have a greater fear of falling down. But the fear for falling down is not vertigo. So what is vertigo ? vertigo is the temptation to fall down against which the person fights and reaches higher.

Discussion was BAD. No one was ready to start. I contributed only in terms of examples. People were discussing general stuff. all examples which were discussed were positive and then in the last one minute someone says "Vertigo would not have all negative aspects. There must be some positive aspects as well. Now that we have discussed all the negative aspects lets try and find something positive." All I could do was resolve to go back and look at the dictionary to find out the meanings of positive and negative

I was the 2nd person to be interviewd. 2 member panel one lady (L), one gentleman (G). and moi (M)

G: So Mr. Saurabh tell us something very briefly about yourself.
M: Blabber blabber blabber (over in a minute). They kept on waiting as if wanting me to say something more. I didn't. Told a bit of SOP in this.
G: Ohh so you have all the qualities of a good manager. Then why do you want to do MBA ?
M: (Cos my parents have excess money to spend. Thought I might as well waste it on IIMK.)
G: Why IIMK?
M: one of IIMs or ISB. No experience. Hence IIM best option.
G: So what do you think is the future of microelectronics industry in India.
M: Very bright. TI Intel, blah blah blah.
G: Have you heard of Peter Meobok (I know this is not the spelling).
M: No sir. ( thought instead of just giving his field and then not knowing what else he's done better to answer no right away. )
L: So why is VLSI industry in India not very good now. Why are we not making indegenous embedded products. Why are there no infosys and TCS in embedded systems?
M: Tell them some good companies are coming up.
L: why now. Why are we always lagging behind. Why are we always followers. WHy are we not the leaders.
M: kept quiet. Had no answer. Told her. (Thought our seniors in elec engineering are a bunch of fools. Couldn't even start one great company )
L: Do you know about the "Press Act 18"?
M: No.
L: It was in the news last year.
M: Ma'am I remember reading it in the newspaper but I do not recollect what it is about. (thought she would give a hint but she didnt )
L: OK. So why did you leave your job.
M: Circumstances.
G: Did your company know you were writing CAT?
M: yes.
L: Have you heard fo Transwitch?
M: No. (Realised later this was a customer of the company I was working with.)
L: So what are you doing in your present job?
M: Its an internship. (Trying to say something more).
L: Yes but even in the internship you must be doing something.
M: blah blah. strategic sourcing.
L: So what is strategy ?
M: (I know what strategic sourcing is. But how the hell do I define strategy?) Planning for the future. making plans. blah blah.
G: Ok. So strategy is same as plan ?
M: No sir they are different. (Think for a second). Sir planning is generally for the long run, it can be for the short run as well. (Realise that so can be strategy) Laughingly but planning can also be for long or short run.
G: Please clear your long and short runs (sternly) ( moi still laughing at my goof up).
G: Ok. Do you remember your basic mathematics ?
M: (thinking if I could say no ) Yes. I can try.
G: Do you know about Gaussian distribution..
M: Sir I can draw the curve. It is bell shaped curve. But I do not remember the integral equation.
L to G: Give him a paper to draw. (G was too lazy to do that)
G: So can you tell any application where you used it?
M: Sir it is used to model the noise in a circuit. The gaussian noise then added White Gaussian noise
L: Why white ? Why not yellow green violet or red?
M: Remember it was because of frequency but was not really sure. Told her I could only guess it was because of frequency of all colours. (Didnt let me complete)
L: You seem to be guessing a lot of things.
L: You can go.

They asked the peon to bring in two cups of tea and cookies. Didnt even offer me (.
Overall the questions were very easy. Just that I screwed up bigtime. But wass a good preparation for the future.

Hope it helps the others.

Wink IIM K Question - 22-02-2005, 08:38 PM

Hi There,
I am new to this group and gave my cat 2004 with a abysmal 89.9 percentile. I aint satisfied with this so have decided to give one more go at it. However i am a bit skeptical as to whether somebody would be asked such a question during PI.
It is very unlikely and if it was asked it would be to find out how a person deals with unusual situations and how well can he ward it off.
I am sure the interviewers were not looking for a numeric figure. They should be looking at how the interviwee approaches the question and how well he gets off it.

Parry
