Found this interesting and hence posting though the thread is pretty old.
A TT ball is 40 mm in dia (Earlier it was 38 mm. I am a TT player

)
assume that it fits into a cube of 2r side (40 mm here). Then it occupies 4/3*pi*r3/(2r)3 ~ .5 of the space = half the space.
therefore it is safe to assume that the total volume of the TT balls fitting in the space is half of the total vol of the plane.
vol of tt ball = 4/3*pi*(.02)^3 ~ 3.3 * 10 ^ -5 m^3
Consider a plane to be a vast cuboid.
I think 747-400 means that it can carry 400 ppl.
each economy seat person gets ~ 1*.75*4 mtr space and there should be abt 350 aconomy seats. there are 6 seats in economy class in a row + 2 rows equivalent of aisle space. => 1*.75*4*8 mtrs = 24 mtr^3. (same row space in economy as well as business class)
In business class has only 4 seats in a row.
350 economy/6 + 50 business/4 = no of rows ~ 71
=> seating space = 71*24 m3 ~ 1700 m^3
add 2 additional rows for the exits - main and emergency.
=> 1750 m^3
add cockpit space ~ 3 rows => 1825 m^3
I am assuming that only the seating space and the cockpit are used for filling up the TT balls.
therefore no of balls = 1825/(2*3.3*10^-5) ~ 27360000.
Vaibhav.
P.S : no googling or 'calculator'ing was done in arriving at the above answer.
