Exclamation Does short IIM interview means rejection ? - 16-03-2005, 10:42 PM

First post so junta go easy on me if commit ny fauxpaus (hope I got the spelling correct )

Profile:

Passed out from NIT

percentile: 99.81 (good quant percentile though avg ATM, both calls PGDCM and PGDM)
Xth: 86 (CBSE)
XII: 76 (MP Board)
Engineer CSE branch: 77.78
Expereince: 2year 7 months in a software MNC(fortune 500 company)

Had my last interview for the season just 2 days back. Now my story is like this ... got 4 calls ACIK (yeah B & L didn't call) Converted MDI Didn't go for NITIE, NMIMS, IMT.

Last interview was IIMCal. So you see nothing else to do except contemplating on how I fared at these interviews and what is in store for me.

Now the issue is the only above average interview I had is IIMA that too because it was pretty chill. There were a couple of 'I don't know's' but overall it looked decent types affair. GD too was chill.

After that the chain started had an average types IIM K interview (too general) nothing great about it (my bike was stolen an hour before gd/pi proving murphy's law by empirical evidence .. since then doing rounds between police station and insurance company).
Though GD was good (but to me it seems GD doesn't have much of weightage in all IIM'S just a tool to identify upper and lower cutoff junta- disclaimer: my perception).

Then came the disaster IIM I, the less said about it the better .. they grilled me a lot on networking even after stating my lack of knowledge on it many times. Number of primeministers alive - just the number not the name! Worst interview ever including all mock, real. Infact at the end he said best of luck for other interviews . Man can it get any worse. Though in GD I gave a lot of sensible points ..

Then came IIMC .. gave ATM it was average types .. didn't remember the series et al so attempt was on the lower side .. pretty average nothing great about it.

Was all charged up for interviews thought i'll crack this one big time, this time nothing can go wrong .. and actually nothing really did go wrong .. its just that it was very short affair .. hardly 10 odd minutes.

First they asked me what am I doing?
-told em
Asked me to elaborate
-elaborated the work profile in detail
Then asked me my rest of studies
- told them my educational background
then asked something resembling why MBA
- told them about entrepreneurship and how MBA fit in
Then that prof started saying his diatribe on coaching inst deciding career goals for people
- chipped in with an amused look and told him that i haven't joined any for GD/PI only test series and certainly career goals shouldn't be decided by any insti but by indivudual and why i feel the need for an mba and how it wud help. He didn't give a very convinced though. Told him that my project is in system testing i m working on weekends too so can't have time for coachig inst. this seemed to cool him a bit.

After this the next guy took over listening to my conversation with prof(he was the guy from industry I heard him talkin on cell)

He continued probing about my work profile and asked me about area of work .. one thing I felt was they were not allowing me to finish my answers and though the questions were open ended answers were not allowed to be descriptive .. when I told him about my company verticals he listened but after then asked me to tell my area of work even when he saw I was coming to that .. then asked me something about how life insurance is issued on what parameters etc .. I answered that .. then he asked from technical why I moved over to domain side (I was like cmon man what else did I tel you about 2 min back) anyway explained how technical and domain expertise go hand-in-hand in my work .. dropped a couple of technical terms for them to take a lead but they were impervious to this ..

And then I turned my face to the middle prof to look for the next question and he says thank you .. I was like bas itna .. cmon man you got to ask me more to know me and explore me better no quant, acad, extracurriculars !!!

All this while the left prof was busy with my form and his calculater and verifying all details. Infact he actually asked me my work experience certificate I located it for him .. after checking my joining he intrupted me again .. said I mentioned 30 months as my workexperience since I joined on 6th Aug so aug wont be counted (as if its a material misrepresentation!) anyway I explained it to him that I assumed august would be included and then promptly made the change and signed it for them.

In less than 10 min I was out !

So here is how it stands

MDI Average GD Decent PI Selected
IIMA Good GD Decent PI
IIMK Good GD Average PI
IIMI Good GD Horrible PI
IIMC Average GD PI was not good (too short and vague)

After managing 99.81 I am actually scared. After all this hype-hoopla this possiblility of not getting through any IIM seems horrible. Though have MDI but still an IIM is an IIM is an IIM ( repetition just for the effects ).

So all gyani public of PG (rohit_anand, suzeQ, pendyal, tirthankar, stringre, fruskee, thussu, khotahimachali, evanescence, hanoz, one_step_to_insanity, PG) did i miss anyone i am sure I missed many but that doesn't mean I dont need your opinion. Please pour in your thoughts on my chances .. so that I can sleep/live/read in peace. :bomb:

it didn't seem to fit in IIM C thread as it was targetting a general question about short interviews. And it was a sort of compilation of all interviews not only IIM C interview. I think I'll remove it from IIM C page as soon as I figure out how to .. (Edited again)

Run thru past int xp. No such conclusion can be drawn. Wait for the results and then speculate all you want

its disheartening to see not many response to my queries/confusions .. the reason why I feel the need for some inputs is because a lot is hingin' on the results of IIMs for me .. else atleast I'll have to leave the current job for sure probably many are in similar situation ..

dude.. dont take load because of a short interview.. doesnt mean much..
i was selected in L with a short interview. rejected in K despite the longest interview in my panel.. selected in Cal with the same.. and rejected by Bangi with a longish interview..
as u see there is no correlation ..
nyways.. being chill is more important ..
there's more to life than degrees

Hmmmm....adding one more perspective 2 ur queries...just returned from a straaaaange iimc interview..not even worth posting! what do i make of it if out of 2 profs, only 1 sits there for the int and the other leaves and is absent for rest of the interview? and that after i have a baaad gd! (only saving grace.....they look at my cat score and appreciate it....mebbe just 4 the heck of it!) ...but really i guess u cant make much out of the duration etc ...never know what happens! ( good excuse that i am making to cover up my pathetic day, aint i?)

my experience tells me selection is not at all correlated to duration of interviews...

my IIMK intvw was only for 5-7 mins...while all the others in my panel had an average of 20 mins.....i felt the way u r feeling now...but then hey i got the call...and so did a guy who was grilled for abt 30 mns...

so just chillax and have fun .....u hve done ur bit...now its all destiny

Sandy
