I was surprised with my interview, to be honest. The panelists were friendly and pleasant, and no sign of them trying to stress me out. I think I was leading them to a few questions at some points during the pi, but most curiously, there were no acad questions at all! (im from a comp engg. bgrnd with 2 yrs experience in the telecoms industry).
so folks, what do you say?
now which one wud u be? i was d one who'd mentioned d friggin exchange program kocchen...n they dint ask me if i had any question for 'em... buggers...nice intrvw wonly..i shall post my intrvw in a short while...

PS: did they actually hav a dummy dude in ur GD??! dats a first..

Question My IIMK GD/PI exp - 28-02-2005, 02:44 PM

Hi People,

My Profile:
Calls: A,L,K, Nitie.
Percentile: 99.02
Work Ex: 16 Months (IT)

Dont know what to interpret from this Gd/PI..

GD:
The topic was a passage talking abt the influence of the communism spreading to western Europe. It concludes that the Global capital and Capitalists ensured that this did not happen.

Moderately peaceful GD. Everyone got chance. Me talked some points .. some global gyan .. US-Japan-Taiwan (how capitalism spread).. common currency Euro .. end of cold war & reason of disintegration of USSR ...

PI:

The panel consisted of Professors P1(a guy with specs) , P2 (a guy with white beard ... did not ask any Q, just going through the files)..

P1: Do u Know @#$%^?
Me: Dont know.
P1: Do u Know *&^&^$%? ( some Operation Research stuff)
Me: Dont know.
P1: Havent u studied OR?
Me: Yes. but 2 years back. And i am not comfortable with this subject. ( i thought he would ask me then what subject r u comfortable in .... but he didnt..)
P1: Supply chain management?
Me: Dont Know.
P1: Do u know Just In Time?
Me: Explained briefly whatever i knew. (he was not 100% happy with it.)
P1: Heard of ERP?
Me: Yes .. Enterprise Resourse Planning.. But dont know about it. But somehow i mentioned oracle-peoplesoft-SAP, when he asked abt the softwares ..
P1: Do u know transportation problem?
Me: Here i made a mistake by trying to answer, rather than telling i dont know. Finally i told him i am not sure. (plz guys dont make this mistake...)
i was thinking why this guy is intrested only in OR ... He was asking me what he knew and not what i knew ..
P1: Asked abt the work .. why cobol still used etc ..
Me: Answered. ( this was the only answer i could give properly)
P1: Ok thank u

just when abt to leave my seat ...
P1: u were agressive in your GD. Group behaviour is also important as a manager. U should allow others also to speak.
Me: (bit surprised) .. i never thought i was aggressive .. i tried comming with different points .. also listened to others points .. (may be agressive w.r.t the group)
P2: went for any coaching?
Me: Yes .. (Does it matter? .. )
P1: what other calls?
Me: told
P1: good luck ..
Me: thank u

------
can any of u guys tell me if u got any such comments abt the GD? I felt my content part in the GD was well. Also they did not ask
1) my fav sub (No tech stuff.. except OR)
2) tell abt u?
3) why MBA?
4) hobbies
dont know on what parameters they r going to evaluate?

------

Had my gdpi at chennai - 9.00 am on 26th feb....
I reached the venue at about 8.20 am. Couldn't meet any PGites... though i think there should have been some of them (Pardeep was there - from the post above). Our names were called and we were taken to 3 different classes - all the groups had the same GD topic. Each group = 7-8 members.

Abt me:
99.62%, fresher frm IITM (Mech).
Acads - 10th - 87, 12th - 92.7, IIT CGPA - 8.25

GD

The arrangement was predetermined and we were guided to our seats. It was a semi-circular arrangement.

Topic:
NGOs do a lot of work and help the society. But these days, runing an NGO has become a lucrative business and has ceased to be a completely social venture.

The GD was quite peaceful. Everyone got a chance to air his views, no airtime hogging. There was one guy whose voice was very soft. Even he got considerable airtime. No female all the 3 groups (about 21-22 males).

We were given 2 mins to think and 10 to discuss. I must accept that the discussion was shallow, with everyone coming up with only examples of NGOs and their work.
No summary was required.

Interview:

I was the last one to be interviewed. Had to wait for about an hour and a half. From the feedback that I got from those who had their interview before me, they were varying the type of questions - one guy had a complete acads based interview, other had a pure HR interview... so I think they didnt want people coming in later to have any sort of advantage.

Panel of 2. The moderators were the interviewers. One of them came into the waiting room and called out my name and accompanied me to the iview room.

two profs - A and B and me V.

A: Sit. Your eye is Red..

V: Infection sir.

A: why did you not wear glasses then?

V: caught it Day before sir. Have been to an opthalmologist.

A; Ok.

B: so you are from IIT eh? Give me your file.

A: You have been placed in X- such a good company with good salary... why not join it. Why go for an MBA?

V: blah... blah...

A: (dismissive) You mean to say that you can't learn about management in X. That these people dont know management?

V: blah..blah..

A: (again dismissive) You are interested in management, you are a mech. engineer and you want to join X which is a software co.... You are contradicting yourself!!

V: No sir. You have got a wrong idea about what I said. I meant ...blah...blah...I wish to learn about ERP if I ever join X.

A: Ok.. you have your own logic which I am not satisfied with... and you don't seem to listen to good advice...anyway...What do you understand by ERP?

V: blah..blah...

A: what is MRP?

V: blah...blah....

A: They both sound the same ... what is the difference?

V: (so do they to me) tried to expain ...though unconvincing...

A: Ok Leave it... You must have heard of SCM... what is it?

V: Supply chain management.... blah...blah...

A: What is the difference between SCM and ERP?

V: (caught on the wrong foot) again tried to make up something...didn't work..he seemed very unconvinced...

B: Oh! you had taken Stats and probability...

V: (Didn't expect that they would go into my maths cources - saved them for C iview )yes sir..

B: what is a probability distribution?

V: blah..blah..

B: Can you give me an example?

V: normal distribution.

B: take this paper and write the equation.

V: writes

B: what sort of distribution is this?

V: continuous.

B: good. Give me a discrete distribution.

V: do not recollect sir.

B: Give me another continuous distribution..

V: Binomial, geometric.

A,B start laughing aloud.
I realise that they are discrete. My biggest faux pas...

V: Sir they are discrete...

A: and what about normal... discrete or continuous?

V: continuous.

A: Ok, you can go.

B: wait .. You have taken special functions and partial differential equations...I have asked this question to several IITians and none have answered it so far...let me see you answer... give me a special function.

V: Gamma function but I dont recollect the equation sir.

B: (guess he didn't listen to me) good. write the equation of the gamma function.

V: I do not recollect sir. But I vaguely remember that it involved integration of e to the power something.

A: Can you relate it to normal distribution?

V: (Do you suffer from an auditory malfunction? ) I don't know sir.

A: Ok you can go.

B: Wait! What did you do in computer simulation? (last semester course in Industrial engineering minor)

V: (I didn't attend the classes as the prof doesn't take attendance)Give him some globe about being introduced to C language(should have been GPSS) and then about Genetic algorithms.

A: Directly to GA??I don't get it??

V: (so what can I do?) Sir, this is a course in the minor stream - Industrial Engineering.

A: Ok tell me what is a GA?

V: some gyan...

A: you have got some idea but that is not complete...anyway you may go now.

V: I get up

B: what other calls have you got? all six?

V: no sir...only A,C and L

B; best of luck for the others...(laughs)

Thats it folks. I had prepared for OR throughly and mentioned it twice in the interview, but I guess they made out that I was prepared for OR. So not a single question on OR.
I guess that was not the best of the lot... So, next up IIMA!! Here I come!!

Learnings:

1. Do not expect anything. go with an open mind.
2. Prepare all your undergrad subjects well. They can ask on any subject. Especially those in the first two years. Stress on Operations and Mathematics.
3. In GD, dont get into any argument with anyone - happen in our GD. Two guys got into an argument. Just let people say what they want. The mods will decide whether it is relevant or not.

Comments, suggestions are welcome.

Vaibhav.

Hi je_ne_sais_quoi, I was actually chatting with you after our Gd, My interview too went on similar lines. I will post my experiences shortly but i didn't have any grilling session, I just had questions on my job responsibilities, questions on my hobbies and finally Would you join K ? , followed by a Thank You and All the Best.

I had a feeling as if they had taken a decision already....

Really can't come to a conclusion as to whether I will make it or not.

Any Idea when the results are expected.

Arrow My experience - 28-02-2005, 06:34 PM

Venue: Loyola Institute of Business Administration, Nungambakkam, Chennai
Time: 3pm
Date: Feb 24, '05
Percentile: 99.37
Calls: ABCK
Work-Ex: 19 months (IT)
GD: Given a sheet in which there were about 5-6 lines..Broadly, topic was "Privatisation of profitable PSUs".

Only 5 out of 8 in our group had turned up for the interview. Were made to sit in an oval shape. I was the 2nd to speak. 3 of us were speaking for about first 5min and then the other two pitched in with few points. Overall, a decent discussion but felt we should have come up with more examples. I was the one to bring out examples like ONGC, IOC and had a decent amount of airtime.

PI: I was the 2nd person to be called for the interview in our group. Average time of interview was about 8-10min.

P1 = Interviewer 1 (Bald and clean shaved);
P2 = Interviewer 2 (Bearded);
M = Myself
M: Good afternoon, Sir

P1: Whats your Name?

M: *&*&

P1: I mean what are you called as?

M: &$&$

P1: What does <my surname> mean?

M: blah blah....

P2: Rajesh, why did not u get into the field of Pure Mathematics?
M: I was never interested in core Maths as such, Sir.

P1: Can I have a look at your certificates?

M: Sure Sir.

P2: But you qualified for Indian National Mathematical Olympiad!!

M: Sir, I cleared the State Mathematical Olympiad and participated in the INMO but did not clear it. Had I cleared it, probably I would have chosen Maths as a career but my not clearing it is an indicator that I am not that good at Maths.

P2: ok, but why do u think in general people do not get into Maths Research.

M: Sir, I guess its an individual's opinion.

P2: but in general, not many people get into Pure Maths or Pure Sciences.

M: Yes sir, Agreed that the cream of IIT, BITS or REC's do not get into Pure Maths.

P2: But why do u think it is like that? Afterall, maths is the foundation of everything. If tomorrow, everyone passes out from IIMK, what would happen to research and types?

M: Sir, there are many reasons why people do not get into research like say organisations like BARC, etc. My uncle was a scientist in BARC. I had asked this question once. He told me that there is less money in this field and also there is very slow career growth.

P1: So u say money is the most important criteria.

M: Sir, not that its the most important but definitely its one of the important factors.

P1: No no, it is one of the major reason.

M: Ok Sir.

P1: What u have done the course Probablility & Statistics? What have u learnt in Statistics?

M: Sir, we have not done much in Statistics. Basics like Median, mode, variance, standard distribution (std dist in statistics???).....And in probability, we have done some distributions like Normal, Poisson, Binomial etc Sir.

P1: Ok, if I ask you to find out the probability of your getting into IIMK, what distribution will u choose?

M: <Not very sure what to say... >I would use Normal Distribution, Sir.

P1: What parameters will u use?

M: Sir, I will take the 10th, 12th, CAT percentiles of all students and then plot a bell graph. I then give them some gyaan on the bell curve when P1 interrupts.

P1: You are telling the characteristic of the Normal distribution...

P1: No, say all the 20 students who have come today have performed same. Then?
M: Sir, I would also see their performance in GD and PI.

P1: No, no I am saying that they have done equally well in GD and PI. Then?

M: <What a question yaar...I am saying I dont know...then act as if thinking...The actual matter was I was not thinking and at that moment, somehow, did not want to think..Wanted to say..Sir, my mind is locked!!....> I would look at the previous batches which have passed out and then compare them with the current profile

P1: What parameters are you going to choose?

M: <..Again act as if thinking..> I dont know Sir

P1: Think, think...You have passed out from such a good institute and also participated in INMO.

M: Sir, I am not able to get any idea as of now.

P1: Ok, I shall give u a clue. What is the likelyhood estimate?

M: <..as if that helped me...but I seem to have heard this word somewhere!!....> Sir, I would use Poisson Distribution.

P1: What Rajesh...Then u said Normal and now Poisson distribution...

M: Sir, I said I dont know. Thats why I am just taking a guess.

P1: No, give it a thought... This means u dont know its practical application..

M: <..abey yaar, kyon paka raha hai...mujhe nahin patha....> I dont know Sir. Atleast as of now, I am not able to find out which distribution I am gonna use.

P1: Ok, have u heard of JIT.

M: Yes Sir, its Just-In-Time...In manufacturing industries, whenever we get an order, the product is manufactured. This effectively reduces the inventory. I mean there is no inventory.

P1: When u get an order, u produce???

M: Yes sir.

P1: What about materials?

M: Sir, we outsource it. I mean we get the materials from the Suppliers. We do forecasting based on our previous sales. Like if we take a Soap company, then based on previous sales, we know how the demand is going to be in every month and so based on that we forecast the demand for the next month. So, we do have certain inventory of materials.

P1: Can u use it in software industry?

M: No Sir. In a way, we can say Yes. I recently read an article on a new concept called temporary workers (..reading BW helped a bit...) Whenever there is an urgent requirement, we contact such organisations who have skilled labour ready with them and they supply the resources in a day or two.

P1: So what is the need of permanent employees?

M: Sir, permanent labours are definitely required. A company requires a certain amount...certain number of people who know the processes.

P1: But many employees sit on bench. Isn't it a waste of resources?

M: Sir, they can be used for knowledge management. In our company itself, I have seen many people on bench but they are not idle. In a typical case, when we get a sales order and are required to get the purchase order details, we write a program. This is common across various projects. So this can be processed <...not at all a right term to use...> I mean we can have a common module and can reuse such functions. So we are utilising the free employees for knowledge management.

P1 to P2: You want to ask anything...

P2: No, its fine.

P1: Thank You Rajesh....

M: Thank You Sir.

After about 12-15min, come out with a mixed feeling of getting screwed but still dont feel that I really got screwed. I was like very cool during the interview and said I dont know if I did not know and told them so.

So dont really know if I did well or not...

So, that was it!!

IIMK guys, wot say abt this experience? They were like harping on probability and I actually felt that I should have given it a lil thought...Later, I felt we can use Binomial dist. (is this right?) but obviously cud not go in and ask them if it was right...I have written 90% of what happened...Missed a few things here and there..

2 errors in hypothesis I think are Type I (alpha) and Type II (beta). The former is the probability of rejecting a hypothesis that is true while the latter is the probability of accepting a hypothesis that is false! QM funda which no sane person should be expected to know b4 bschool

Dont worry too much about the interview...seems ok. Your profile seems bang in the middle of the common profile at IIMK (Im ex-cognizant too , lotsa TCS/Infy ppl here as well)

A: u know reorder pooint...
M: yes sir (I was happy as I explained this too to the same friend) i started explaining.. but he cut me short..

GD:
Venue: LIBA Chennai, Feb 26, 11:30AM

It was 11:30AM and we were still in the waiting room waiting for the GD to start. Finally, after 20 minutes, we were called into our respective rooms. We were given the topic, 2 minutes to think and 10 minutes to discuss.

GD topic: "Thirty years ago, economic progressives predicted that the cold war would end, Western Europe would become more socialist and the eastern Europe would become less authoritarian. It was believed that both the states would meet in between. But the Global capital and political emissaries made sure this never happened."

I am totally stumped after seeing the topic. I used the 2 minutes to understand the topic! No one really came up with any gr8 points. Not much of cross talk, except for a couple of times . I chipped in with 3-4 points.(didnt know what to talk abt initially, but made up some points as the GD progressed)

Interview:

I1 = interviewer 1
I2 = interviewer 2

I1 : So Mr. @#$%, what does your name mean?
Me : put fundaes

I1 : OK. Tell us something about yourself
Me : told abt myself, my education, current job, hobbies

I1 : Oh! You said playing Dumb-charades is your hobby. Can you enact this? (and gives me 'I AM GOING TO CRACK THIS INTERVIEW' written on a sheet of paper)
Me : Sir can you give me sometime to think abt this?

I2 : Why do you need sometime? Can't you do it immdtly?
Me : Sir, generally we are given a minute or two to think abt the clue before acting it out.

I2 : OK
Me: (thinks for sometime and finally gets up to do some acting!)
(After 2-3 minutes of silence, both I1 and I2 have a smile on their face and ask me to take my seat)

I2 : (going through my grade sheet). Who taught you this course - 'Religion and Modern Science'?
Me : (bulb for sometime as I cannot remember the prof's name, but finally say some (other) name..hopefully those guys donot verify the name)umm..John, sir

I2 : So why is the course called Religion and Modern Science?
Me : Sir, the course explains the relation between religion, or the church and it's
relation to the modern scientific theories.

I2 : Did you take the course because you were interested, or did you take it because you had to take some course so that you fulfil the reqd credits?
Me : Sir, I took the course originally in my 8th semester as I had to complete my credits, but later got interested in the course..(diplomatic ans, i shd say )

I2 : what were you taught in the course?
Me : Gave some examples of how science was connected to the church(Copenicus, Galileo, etc were prosecuted by the church bcoz of their theories)

I1 : who else was imprisoned by the church on the basis of violation of the current theories?
Me : I donot remember the names sir

I1 : What else did u learn from the course?
Me : Sir, abt Pantheism(vaguely remember it as I wrote a term paper on it for the course). According to the theory, god is present in all the things in the universe.

I2 : which was your fav subject in IIT?
Me : Sir, I didnot have any sub as my fav, but I liked the course Power Systems among all

I2 : what were you taught in that course?
Me : told abt high voltage transmission lines, the materials used for insulation, so on.

I2 : given a forest, how do set up high voltage lines without cutting down any trees?
Me : (gist of what i said)Sir, by varying the distance between the lines and their heights, we can set up trees in such a way that minimum number of trees get to be cut down. This is possible by using the area of the forest, height of the trees, etc. (I shd have stopped here, but nope...)In countries like US, such high voltage lines are set up using helicopters .

I1 : how are they set up in india?
Me : (i bulb, as i donot remember how they do that) I donot know sir.

I1 : Did you get calls from any other IIMs?
Me : Sir I got IIM calls from Calcutta, Lucknow and Kozhikode.

I1, I2 : So Mr. @#$%, do you have any questions for us?
Me : No Sir, thank you

I1, I2 : You may leave now. (Come out of the room with mixed feelings)

GD was bad, as I felt the points I put were not so good. The only thing +ve for me is that I was not mum, and participated to some extent .
In the Interview, I was confident throughout and didnot try to bluff them at any pt.
So wat say junta? ?

I will post my experiences shortly but i didn't have any grilling session, I just had questions on my job responsibilities, questions on my hobbies and finally Would you join K ? , followed by a Thank You and All the Best.

I had a feeling as if they had taken a decision already....

Really can't come to a conclusion as to whether I will make it or not.

Any Idea when the results are expected.
