IIM Indore GD/PI Experiences...

hi all.
I reached at IIMB at 8.15 today morning. three people - one bored, rheumy sardar, one dark upright moustached fellow, and one huge, pale funny-looking chap. the last guy did all the roll-calling, explaining etc.

My background: electrical engg from IITK working in Infosys for last 21 months, Percentile 99.37(verbal 86.14), Xth 90, XIIth 90, College: 7.5

CASE: Satya is working in a company as a trainee.She gets a call from district magistrate rediculing for not delivering the PC on time for which he had paid the whole amount in advance. He was told that the PC will be delivered in 30 days and nothing is delivered even after 45 days. She had a meeting with her ASM(area sales manager) and marketing executive. They knew that the processeing time for any consignment is 60 days but to achieve their sales target they promised him. They are now planning to deliver empty cartons with a slip saying that only someone from he company is going to open it and install it. When they'll actaully get the consigment they will replace it saying that something is wrong. Sathya disagrees but can't do anything. Soon the ASM is removed from the company for some malpractise and the marketing executive takes his place. Sathya feels like leaving the company and look for job somewhere else. What should sathya do?

It was a peaceful GD with eight people without any girl

PI: I was the the third last person to be interviewed. Almost all had 20min interview. Mine was a bit less.
Sardarji (S), Middle guy (M), and Biggie (B)

B: so you are from allahabad and did your electrical engineering from IIT kanpur? What was your JEE rank?
Me: 237 sir

M: asks for my folder.
I give it to him

B: Your marks of X and XII also seems to be good but how'll you rate your academic performance in IITK? what was your rank?
Me: Sir my rank will be around 30/80 (don't know actually but it should be around 40/100).
[ gave a lot of explaination why my acads suffered in IITK becasue of extra curriculars. He looked to be convinced.]

S: What is an induction motor?
Me: blah blah blah...

S: what is a capacitor? how is it different from starter.
Me: tried to explain that capacitor is the basic component whereas starter is a circuit made using capacitor, resistor and inductor.
[I am not sure what it is actaully?]

S: why don't we use capacitor in tubelight instead of starter.
Me: sorry I don't know.

S: What are the different types of circuits?
Me: [thinking] something..... give some answer.

S: [he asks somehting which I don't make out anything?]
Me: I don't know sir.

S: didn't you study it in Electrical engineering.
Me: Sir I did only 2 courses in Electrical. Most of them are in electronics and communications.

S: Ok what is a diode?
Me: blah blah

S: what is a triode?
Me: I misunderstood it as transistor and started explaining. so sardar interrupts me in between. I said I forgot what is a triode.

S: what is a thyristor?
Me: blahblah

S: what is a digital circuit?
Me: blahblah...

S: what is an anolog circuit?
Me: I explained him in terms of transisters and diode.

S: is there any anolog circuit in this room?
Me: no sir.

S: look again.
Me: Sir I think you are talking about Electrical anaolog circuit and I am talking about analog circuits in chips. [Tried to explain him but he doesn't seemed to be pleased.]

shifts to B

B: So you are from allahabad. what is allahabad famous for.
Me: blahblah blah

B: what all political parties are there in UP?
Me: majorly 4 sir: BJP and SP, then Congress and BSP.

B: from which party is the CM? his name?
Me: Mulayam singh yadav from SP.

B: what is the population of UP?
Me: don't know sir.

B: what are the major source of revenue for UP?
Me: basically sugarcane and wheat. don't know about the rest sir.

B: what is the mojor source of power generation in india.
Me: Hydro electric followed by thermal and nuclear [does anybody know whether it is thermal or hydroelectric which is the mojor source of power in india?]

shifts to M

M: have you heard about tennessee valley project?
Me: No sir.

M: have you heard about narmada valley project?
Me: Yes sir.

M: still you haven't heard about tennessee valley project?

Me: No sir .

they indicate that the IV is over so i thank them and leave

all of a sudden B asks me if I have all the calls, I say NO I have only IK calls. He wishes me luck and I leave.

dont know wht to think

TIP: irrespective of work-ex., they are concentrating on acads, acads and acads so be prepped.

hi,

More than 80% of electricity in India is generated from thermal sourc. It is a normal misconception that hydro electricity is the major source of energy.

this is a bad criteria to evaluate upon.
especially work ex guys shud not be grilled toooooooo much on the acads.

Woo .. I intws r already started!! .... Mez curious to see how some non-techie gets grilled (read Com/BBA/BMS/etc) ... Wht kinda heavyduty acads can they plough into afa teh alternative courses (n evrythin non-engr can b bracketed in alternative)go i wonder?!

i am an mbbs and got pretty much grilled on my acads; although the Qs. were not common med. doubts, they were pretty easy for me to handle as med. as very intensive, even during practice. remember that these guys knoe their stuff and will grill you and grill you again on your acads....

I am working in Blore. Have 20 months of work ex in IT.
I have done my electrical engineering from IIT Roorkee (CGPA 8.1)
10th -92% and 12th 84%


My IIM Indore interview on 20th Feb is as follows:


there were three professors say P1, P2, P3. I was their prey so I will call my self Victim V.

P1 seemed a nice guy. P2 was bald and looking into my eyes at all times. P3 looked very serious.

V : Good Morning!

P2 : U havent filled up the no of months of work ex in the form. ( puts the form in front of me).

V: sorry. fills it up with the pen they give me...( one hell of a start )

P2 : (takes back the form and looks into it)

P1 : Can u show me ur certificates?

V : ya sure ( gives him the file )

P2 : What is FDI?

V : I tell him.

P2 : Why is currently important?

V: tell him a little bit abt the UPA govt policies and hw it is encouraging FDI which is giving more money to industries. (didnt really explain well)

P2 : What is SEBI?

V: tell him the full form..

P2 : (immediately asks the next question) Can FDI be done an IT company?

V: Says yes. It can be done. Currently IT industry is not under the government though it is regulated by the government. FDI can be made. Gave an example of July Systems which received FDI. (wasnt really sure initially but later i came strongly and said it is allowed).. ( however initially i had some doubts )

P2 : U work in a private company? ( i say yes) how is a private company different from a public company?

V: tell him abt being listed in the exchange and stuff..( this was easy)

P2: what is "limited" in Pvt Limited company.

V : I am not sure about that. Maybe it deals with ownership of the board of directors but not sure. ( shud have skipped it )

P1: ur company is private limited..u shud know this..

V: Yes, I should know this. I will find out. ( smile)

P2: What is an IPO?

V: tell him in detail..cited the example of TCS in the process.

P2: any news on the IPO front?

V: I mention the jet airways IPO

P2: Any IPOs in future?

V: mention Hutch and UTV

P1: U have got good grades in Economics and Management courses in college. Good

V: I smile and say thanks

P1: can u name any books u studied?

V: I fumble and say no. I dont remember. I studied from my notes. I am missing the name of the book. ( wasnt really sorry )

P1 : Then IIT Roorkee is just like any other college.

V: No, Our professor is this subject was good and it was better to study from the notes. From the books we get the entire details which might not be required.

P1: So do u think the education system is not good?

V: I say no. It depends on the students as to how much they can learn from the institute and put that to use.

P2: do u remember any other course books in other subjects? like Digital Electronics ( smiles and says that u have got A in both the courses ( mgmt and economics...in digital elec it was much worse )

V: I say yes. In digital we had Morris Mano.

P2: analog electronics?

V: We had some books like Millman and halkias.

P1 : ok name some publishing houses in india and abroad.

V: In india we have tata mcgraw hill and Mcgraw hill abroad. We also have harper collins and double day abroad for publishing novels.

P1 and P2 : P3 U can now ask..

P3 : U are an electrical engineer. Tell us the difference in Electrical engineering and Electronics ?

V : The difference lies in teh fact that elec engg deals with large values of current and voltage about 220 V etc while electronics deals with low values of current and voltage

say 5V.. ..

P3 : (immediately next question ) so is there is a fine demarcation between both..say some voltage level?

V: no there is no demarcation like that. Many electrical equipments use electronic materials.

P3 : What is an UPS. is it electrical or Electronic?

V : it is electrical. It might use Electronic equipment inside. I am not sure... It is a inverter as well as a volatge regulator.

P3: what is the unit of power?

V: (stumped for a few seconds. ) watts..

P3 : any other?

V: kilo watts ..

P3 : smiles ( i also smile)

P3: then what is ampere?

V : it is the unit of current

P3: wht is switchgear?

V: switchgear is the mechanism used to protect electrical transmission and whenever there is a fault in teh lines it uses a tripping mechanism to protect the

transformers and the generators. switchgear consists of relays and circuit breakers and depending on the relay speed and accuracy circuit breakers protect the electrical systems. ( blah blah....)

P3 : what is electronic switchgear?

V: I dont know. Maybe it is something similar but not sure abt it.

P3: what is electrolysis?

V: Gave them the proper answer with anode cathode and the electrolyte which shud be a liquid with ions so that when electricity is passed the cations move to anode and anions move towards cathode..( something like that which was correct.. the profs were ok with it)

P3: can sugar solution be used.

V: it can be used but it will be a very poor conductor as it doesnt have many ions..salt solutions is used..

P3: can u explain why?

V: usually salt solution consists of a strong cation and a strong anion. In water they easily break up into ions and these ions help in conduction..gave them an example of sodium sulphate kind of salt..( some more blah blah..)

P3: can u give an example where electrolyis is used?

V: a battery is an example though they use a solid electrolyte.

P3: asked a couple more questions which were easy..

P1 : ok ..have u got any more calls

V: yes, I have got calls from all the six IIMs..

P1: Best of luck of them. ( All smile)

V: i smile and say thanks...( go out)



In the middle of the interview a peon comes inside to give tea. Due to the noise and nobody was asking questions then, I looked back to see who it was. I dont think it was a problem.
