Yaar, i wanted to start this thread but my connection is so bad that it kept getting disconnected. Anyways, here's my take on the situation...
First Day First Show...
Location IIM Ahmedabad... 9:00 AM 12th Feb, Saturday...
Reach campus at 8:00, chowkidaar has been instructed that ppl in suits be directed to the under-tunnel to reach the new campus (it's across the road).
I'm a localite, so i didn't have a any trouble finding the place (I was without suit... chowkidaar asks me, "kya kaam hai?")... Met Strangelove (Nityanand) waiting in the tunnel staring at something I don't know...
Anyways, we go in and see some nicely dressed guys and girls, who obviously don't seem to be students and head there. A nice gentleman there starts calling our names and both me and strangelove are directed to a room. There were around 30 ppl (my estimate) broken down to groups of around 8-10 each. One chap was missing in our group, hence there were only 7 fellas in my group. Strangelove was with me. He was no. 2, me was no. 3. There is one girl in the group. 4 ppl with workex.
Anyways, we talk for a while, when 3 gentlemen (faculty of IIMA) get into the room, while we wait outside. We are then called in and made to sit in pre-allocated places around a li'l conference table.
After the formalities are out of the way, we're told that we'd have 5 min. to read the case , 20 mins to discuss it and 5 more min. for writing a summary.
The case is on a textile factory's VRS problems, etc. etc. The discussion goes off very well... all put points, good points... moderators keep moving around us, after a while, they asked us to write the summary.
Excellent Group overall, mature discussion, good points, absolutely no cutting-others-off and each person patiently giving all a chance... Me chipped in with 4 or 5 points and spoke for around 20 -30 seconds each time.
Mods ask us to give the form and photocopies of marksheets and leave for a while... Interviews in the order of GD seating to begin after a few minutes...
Mine was third... we wait out and first chap comes out smiling... nice interview... very nice panellists, cool people and very knowledgeable.
My turn...
Three panellists, same ppl who moderated GD... same table... one gentleman sat a great distance behind me (not an interviewer) and kept observing me (the back of my head?)
P1, P2 and P3, the three interviewers....
H .... me...
P2 (smiling) So H, tell me something about yourself...
H (smiling) ...... i give them a brief intro ... ending with something suggesting that everyday i learn something new in life...
P2 (raised eyebrow, but smiling) So what did you learn yesterday?
H : How to deal with a very bad cold and cough just a day before a big interview and not lose hope... With God's grace, my voice's clear today... (all smile)
P3 (laughing) Ya ya, it was very clear today...
P2 : something about my college....
H : i answer it
Mr. P1 asks for my file (certificates, etc.)
P2 Tell me what's the difference between this regulator (points to a fan regulator) and the older fan regulators...
H : .... I tell them about the solid state , triac regulators, power savings, etc. etc....
P2 : So how does it work?
H : .... tell them about power control to AC motor, etc. etc. ....
P2 : hmm... and how does a laser printer work...
H : I am not hundred percent sure, but I think this is how it works.... describe the technique (incidentally the method i describe is the correct one)
P2 : and an inkjet?
H : ... describe the technique... and this one i'm sure of...
P2: So the difference is?
H : ...explain the difference ...
Mr. P1 is flipping through the certificates...
P2 : ok... what's the difference between iteration and recursion?
H : I explain general terms , with general examples... then with relation to computer programming...
P2 : Write an iterative pseudocode for this... Shows me a problem
H : Sure.... I write some code on a sheet which Mr P2 provides...
P3 : Tell me something about ur project...
H : spent a few minutes explaining the whole thing, from start to finish....
P1 : Tell me something... why do we need VRS?
H : Give them my views....
P1 : But why not just sack people?
H : .... more gyan...
P1 : why only people close to retirement? Say IIMA wants to offer me VRS, i have experience, i dont think i should leave....
H : Sir, I believe that there are two schools of thought on this ... On one hand there are people who believe as you do, but there is also another perspective of the management..... more gyan...
P1 : ... something about labour intensive textile industry...
H : ... my views...
P1 : What are the different costs incurred by such an industry?
H : .... gyan... with distribution of overheads, fixed and variable costs, grassroot level workers', supervisory costs, managerial costs, raw material , maintainance and repair, etc. etc.
P1 : Tell me an industry with over 40% expenditure in paying salaries of ppl, human cost i.e.
H : (think for a second or two) .... i suggest one industry....
P1 (smiles) : Give me one more example...
H : .. give two more examples... (everyone looks satisfied)
P3 : You've mentioned Chess as a hobby... so why do you think players playing white usually win more than blacks...
H : ... give my views, strategic early-game advantage, etc. etc., my perspective of the issue....
P3 : So if you're playing black, what's ur usual strategy?
H : ... explain it....
P3 : So what's that called...?
H : SIr, I do not play chess professionally, and so I am not very well versed with the names of certain moves and formations, but the opening strategy and attack strategy are the ones i described to you.... Dont know what they call it technically (smile)
P3 : Ok
P3 : You've got a gap in ur career, what did you do in the meanwhile...?
H : Explain what i did, applied to jobs, got one, job defered, gave other tests, technical exams, etc.
P3 : what jobs?
H : Give a long list of them... what i did and where all i got selected.
P3 : And also gave the GRE? Why? What score?
H : Give them my reason, scores (seemed good) and more reasons... the advantage of it... etc. etc.
P1 : Ok, thank you very much, you may now leave... and yes... pleas
e do have a chocolate...
H : point to my throat (bad throat), they start smiling... I say "i'll take one for my brother though...."
P1 : and why would the chocolate cause the throat condition to deteriorate?
H : Begin giving explanation....
P1 : Ok Ok (smiling)...
H : Thank you, Sir (to each interviewer)
........
That's it folks.
I thought that I thought, therefore I was, but then I thought that had I not thought, would I be not? Then I realized, I think BECAUSE I am.

That was very smooth from Hanoz.
Definitely PG's first hit at IIM A.
