Hi folks…had my IIMA interview…

Time: 9 am

Venue: IIFT, Delhi



Groups of 8 each..me the only female in my group…groups on region basis….i knew 5 ppl im my group already..met some Pgites in the other group

Case study is abt a guy who is a placement rep, he has to prepare a press release wherein he is in a dilemma- shud he give all facts abt MNC placements n antagonise the govt..or shud he stress on Indian placements and discourage future students….nice group everybdy spoke…my perfrmance ok…time given to write summary as well



I was the first one to be interviewed.

P3: u r the first one to be interviewed..r u nervous?

G: smiles..yes I am

P1: got a campus placement?

G: yes..in infosys

P1: wat is a metallurgical engineer like u doin in infy?

G: explain tht job is not my focus..infy was the first company to visit..hence as a back up took the job …etc..

P1: Y is it tht software companies have strted taking everybdy n not only comp sc ppl?

G: explain tht they want ppl who can think logically hence engineers…their training is enough..

P1: more questions on the same

G: me answers

P1: wat r ur other activities..u find time for them since u r the topper?

G: classical music(hindustani)…a non-profit organisation I joined in coll

P1: several qustions on this org…..even a situation

G: answers all

P1: asks for the file

P1 sees the file for the rest of the interview

P3: so after the job thing did u lose interest in ur metallurgical acads or did u still study?

G: of course I studied…for instance…I pursued a training at IITR in nanomaterials

P3: (looks interested)…asks me wat they are,their uses, whether their table could be made with it, compare strengths of steel, composites and nanomaterials, nanotech and its future, whether nanomaterials could replace steel(all these asked one by one)

G: I reply to all well since I have actually worked on them

P3: draw the iron carbon diagram

G: I draw it….no more questions on the diagram

P3: asks if a diagram on nickel could be drwan

G: it can be drawn if u r talkin of a phase diagram..but I don’t know the diagram myself..

P1: name some steel companies in India

G: SAIL, TISCO, Jindal

P3: gave some situation of havein iron ore extracted from desert sands…is it possible?

G: told him economic viability shud be seen first…the ore…(interrupts)

P3: does the ore have a name?

G: of course..haematite…in other plants it is used as such wihtout concentrating..hence extra costs wud be huge in this case

P3: the most ductile meta u know

G: either gold or platinum

P3: y is gold ductile

G: explains fracture mechanism…gold absorbs too much of energy…stress concentration is very low…hence it stretches…does not break..etc etc

P2: Do u know abt MS Subbalakshmi

G: famous carnatic musician..recipient of awards..bharat ratna…gandhiji..passed away recently..etc etc

P2: U know abt Thyagaraja

G: said he was an exponent of carnatic music..didn’t know anythin else…

P2: ok…ur own favorites in hindustani classical

G: Pandit rajan n sajan mishra…benaras gharana..inspirational stuff etc etc..



They all look towrads each other..smile..n say its over..ask me to take a toffee..i smile n take …ask me to take more for my parents..i take one for my father..thank them n leave..



So guys wat do u all say? I had a good feelin in the sense tht the tech part didn’t let me down…more or less answered everyhtin asked..

Very cool interview. ppanelists were extremely nice and no grilling of any kind
I thot that acads part went off well, can really judge how my own intw went but that was it....mine went on for abt 30 min while evryone else seemed to be out in 15....dunno if thats gud or bad

Had my GD/PI today at IIFT 9AM. Was in Rohit Anand's batch.
99.23 %ile.
BE (4t yr) ECE, NSIT, 81%
X - 85%, XII - 91%

GD:
Technical institute WIMWI, batch of 200 placed. Max salary of 40lacs in MNCs, 3Lacs in Indian cos. Ibrahim is the head of media council and has to prepare press release. The Ministry of MaPower (MMP) says that the insti is catering to MNCs and not to its mandate of providing Quality Professionals to Indian Industry and want an Inquiry. Now if Ibrahim quotes figures and MNC in report MMP will cry, if not then no students next yr. What to do?

Me: I believe a discussion would serve the purpose better…



P2: So you are from DPS RKP, known to be a very good school, how is it?

Me: Sir, frankly speaking, I did not enjoy my years at RKP cause no interest in studies, only timepass there. Did like the last few yrs because I participated in competitions, visited schools etc…



P2: So you also wasted time?

Me: No sir, these were co-curricular activities like programming and science fairs and quizzes



P2: Why have you underlined your strengths and weaknesses?

Me: Sir, so that it is easier for you to quickly get the main idea.



P2: So you mean to say we don’t read the complete para?

Me: Sir, I didn’t say so… What I am saying is that as you have so many sessions, it would be easier to get the main idea by a quick glance. Sir, these are the most important words and the rest are kust supporting sentences.



P2: So, what do you read?

Me: Both fiction and non-fiction. Lately more of non-fiction



P2: Name last five books…

Me: Made in Japan, Peace in Winter Gardens by Anees Jung, Nehru The Invention of India, Behind the golden Arches, From babudom to netaland



P2: Tell us something abt Peace in Winter Gardens

Me: It is about the experiences of the author when she visits places such as Palestine and Ireland and tells about how ppl haven’t left hope………

Me: Sir that does not matter, it is her experiences in the past 50 years of her life that are more important…….



P2: So one should experience everything before writin?

Me: Sir, it is important to be experiences about what you write….



P2: So, you have read Made In Japa?

Me: Yes sir



P2: Very inspiring book…. But then you should not be here?

Me: Sir I wish to be an entrepreneur and I believe that the 2 most important things for that are – knowing your job well ie technically and be able to manage it well. Apart from that manage,emt education was not popular then. Also Akio Morita did encounter many managerial problems and I don’t want to make obvious mistakes which I will learn by doing MBA



P2: Name some MBAs who have been great entrepreneurs.

Me: Can’t recall any… As I said MBA popular only after the 1980s



P2: You know when was Harvard established?

Me: Sir, I know it is very old, but as I said, MBAs became popular after 80s as before that it wa all theory



P2: How can you say so?

Me: I read in a book by the economist



P2: So you believe in 1 book?

Me: Sir economist is very reputed and it gave a comprehensive view and hence I believed in it to quite an extent.
