Hi junta,
Had my IIMA Group Discussion and Personal Interview today.
Background : B.Tech.(IT).
No Work-Experience.
10th ICSE : 91.4%
12th ISC : 92%
B.Tech. : 9.73/10(CGPI) - Semester Rank 1.
CAT Percentile : 99.74 (VA/QA/DI : 98.47/96.61/99.66)
First was the GD : There were 6 boys and 1 girl. (2 members had percentiles of 99.97 and 99.9

(5 mins reading followed by 20 mins discussion followed by 5 mins summarizing on paper)
Everyone spoke. Was a cool one with no fight for speaking. Everybody got chance and everyone listened patiently. Guess that everyone ws frightened to create a scene out there. Covered various aspects of the Case and did reach to a short term and long term solution.
My contribution : relatively lesser air-time (spoke for nearly 2min 30 sec in all). Didnt go on to repeat any point. Contributed 3-4 fresh suggestions. Provided the short term and long term solutions.
Interview : I was number 5. So got a chance to know abt the board from other persons. The board was asking a lot of acads. Most were grilled on acads.
My experience :
Q. Ok Mr Roopesh. So, you are a B.Tech. in Computer Science from IIIT-Allahabad.
(I corrected him by saying I am a B.Tech. in Information Technology from IIIT-Allahabad).
Q.So Whats the difference between a B.Tech. course in IT and Comp Sc?
A. I replied by saying they are essentially same except that IT also has some subjects stressing the usage of comp. sc. and internet technology on business and other applications(like i gave them example of E-Business and ERP)
Q. What is E-business?
A. Business across the internet (did explain to them)
Q. Suggestions for deploying an E-Business system for a Firm with just one product.
A. Told them to prepare a website with support for receiving orders, etc. (Was interjected in the middle asking for what else apart from website.) Explained them the Logistics requirement and gyaan on EDI.
Q. What sort of products are better suited for E-Business?
A. Told them abt books, electronic gadgets, etc and explanation for the same. (gave examples of Amazon.com, etc)
Q. What would be the implication of using EBusiness for the sale of a trouser and how would it be different from that of a book?
A. Told them that book would remain same but trouser need to be tried and tested before.
(Here the role of the interviewers changed and the second interviewer took control)
Q. What are Flops? (This was a sudden change from EBusiness to Computer Architecture....Sudden enough to make me forget what does it stand for)
A. Explained them without the full form what does flop mean.
Q. Difference between Flops and GHz as a measure for processing power?
A. explained them by telling abt GHz this time as the number of clock cycles per second for a processing element.
Q. Whats the speed of prcessors in market these days?
A. Told them the value in GHz.
Q. Asked me abt its equivalent in Flops.
A. Answered them by saying it would depend on the number of Cycles it would take for an FLO to take.
Q. Asked me abt Super Computers?
Q.Asked me abt Param?
Q. Asked me abt how are super computers built?
(Described the first two clearly with some fuzziness in the explanation of the third)
Q. Asked me what for it is used?
(Answered this using soem examples of real time applications from the field of Terrain Visualization and Rendering, BioInformatics - Was asked to explain how exactly would it be used.)
Q. Asked me to design a mini-super computer for them.
(again a lil fuzzy design - but referred to technicalities as Parallel Computing and Shared Memory Architecture).
(The first interviewer was back to business)
Q. So how comfortable are u in MAthematics?
A. Reasonably ok.
Q. Did u do a course in Mathematics?
A. I had it in first 2 sems.
Q. What all did u study?
A. Told them the area that i m really comfortable with. (like Calculus and Complex Algebra). (Interestingly he didnt ask from either)
Q. Did u have a course in Discrete Mathematics?
A. Yes sir.
Q. Define Graph? Define Connectedness? Define Adjacency List? Define A Tree? How is it different from a Graph?(sort of got stuck while describing this, but i answered it finally.) What will the numbe of edges in a graph with 'n' vertices?
(Answered all comfortably except for the one with remark.)
(The Third Interviewer is now into action)
Q. Have u ever seen a currency note?
A. Yes sir.
Q. How many languages are there in a box on a currency note?
A. Not sure, but I guess its 15 for notes above denomination 2.
Q. Why 15?
A. 15 languages as stated in some section of the Indian constitution. (I dont know if its rite). - I got the impression that it is so.
Q. Ok, So in which order are the languages?
A. I dont know sir. But If u allow me to guess, it would be in alphabetical order of the language names.
Q. Language names in which language while ordering/
A. I guess it would be English.
(The two answers as well as the number 15 turned out rite later)
Q. Roopesh, you are not sure in which order. So suggest me some ways to order them.
A. I guess first is the alphabetical order according to their names in English. Another way would be to order them according to the number of people who speak that language.
Q. How would u calculate that?
A. Gave some method using population information. (They even appreciated the method.)
Q. Any other method?
A. According to how old the scripts are.
Q. Two people speaking differnt language woudl fite on this issue. Each would claim that its the oldest. What to do now?
A. Arrange them according the most ancient scripture that u can find of the language.
(Matter happily settled here.)
Q. How would u place them. (In ASC or DESC order)
A. Ascending as it seems more logical.
Q. Why logical?
A. Gave them the explanation that we scan a script from the top to bottom and not from bottom to top and thus highest preferred must be @ top, blah blah.
Q. Asked me to suggest as weird a method for ordering
A. I was dry with ideas.....Suggested them to order according their latitude wise positioning of the states in which they are popular. (One interviewer commented "Very weird")
(I started sensing that the interview is abt to be over)
The third interviewer asked me to pull out a ntoe and see for myself the ordering and the number of languages and convey to him. I was correct on most of my guesses that i earlier made.
Thats it and the interview ended. They didnt even open my file. Didnt ask me abt extra-curr or hobbies or any conventional question.
asked me to have a toffee. When I picked up, he third interviewer asked for it. While unwrapping the toffee, he again asked me doesnt the wrapper seem metallic - he asked whether its an aluminium foil or what. He said it shines like a metal. But then suddenly said smilingly "I m not even letting u have ur candy....U can have it and go". I answered as I was picking up another one.
It was finally over. Guys, I have tried to recall as many questions as possible. I could have missed out some. But anyways, feel free to comment on it. I guess that inspite of having a percentile of 99.74, I was a minnow out there with big guns having 99.9+.
I put in my best....I hope that the interviewers put in the best marks too.
All depends on them.
Roops
