my iim a gd experience - 19-02-2005, 02:22 PM

hi guys
had my gd/pi on v day-14th feb. reached iim a by 8:30 and tried to make friends with the group.
there were seven of us. only one bandi. case study was as follows. topic was given then we got 5 min to read. then the lady in the panel told us to start. after 20 min she called time again and we were given 5 min to write summary of gd.
a suggestion here guys : be fast in writing the summary. finish prob description fast and move to solutions the group discussed fast. 2 guys in our group were still on problem definition when 5 min got over.

Case:
there is a private company which makes wagons. some festival is there one day. all workers get their families to show them around the factory.
earlier this company was private. 20 years ago central govt took over. Mr dinesh is asst manager. his son who is at iit is visiting after 5 years. asks his dad how factory is going on.
Mr dinesh says they have problems. employees are unruly and are moonlighting. they punch cards and go off to work in another company. morale of other workers going down because of this. production down from 30 to 5 wagons per month.
incentives won't work as cannot be enuf to compensate double pay. incentive on wagon> 20 still won't work as workers say even if 19 no incentive so why not just produce 5 and take it easy.
if strict course of action taken union problems might take place.
what should mr.dinesh do?

analysis:

my contribution:
i suggested need for efficient supervision and strict rules. i said labour probs can be dealt with. seriously req to get company bak on track. gave bombay mills examlple of datta samant( eg of failure of labour unions). was much against incentives as this would not be a permanent solution. also tried to derive sense out of the first para by saying that probably the workers still have a sense of belonging as they brought their families to show them the factory.

group decided :

1. talk to them and make them understand the importance of their work and their contribution.
2.analyse what went wrong in past 5 years which caused situation .
3. removal of punch card system and a supervisor in place.
4. individual incentives to workers instead of collective as suggested in case.
5. team building exercices
6. need for a strict system , more efficient management and punishments ( fines and pay cuts for being absent) if required.

my iim a pi - 19-02-2005, 02:29 PM

i was last in my group of 7. had to wait for 2 hours for my interview.
first ques was how does scanner work? diff b/w led and lcd ? how does
a watch work?
then was given a numerical on heights and distances to solve.
solved it correctly i think.

one old panelist says he has been in the himalayas for the past
five years. asks me to update him on all that has happened in past
five years in india.
i talked about upa govt, manmohan singh, partition of states,
tsunami , wto things coming into effect and some more things.
quizzed a lot about tsunami. what is it? how is it caused? place of
origin? how many died? diff b/w gujarat quake and tsunami. diff b/w
disaster management and early warning system. why so many countries
coming up with aid not just for india but for smaller nations as
well. why india refused aid?
that's about it guys. at the end of it am unable to say if i will
get through. tried my best but was totally clueless about around 3-4
questions.

question: why did india refuse aid offered by other countries in the
wake of tsunami?
i don't yet know if what i said was correct but this is what i said.
right now india has burgeoning forex reserves which have exceeded
130 billion dollars. we have already made advnace interest payments
on some of the loans which we had taken. since a lot of this aid
being offered is in form of loans india does not require them.
about the free aid i said that we would be required to make
compromises in the future if we took aid from other counties. also
accepting it would show the world that we still need to be dependent.

tell me is this answer correct? if not then what is the correct
answer?

all the best to you guys for your gd/pi's.

i dont think that was particularly right answer... coz what i believe is that was more related to the UPA government decision.. which was based on making people believe globally that we are self sufficient and effecient nation... and as far as i know we are not using our forex reeserve to help people affected by tsunami... and another reason was that the magnitude of disaster was so big that it took places which were affected by 20-30 years backward... so any help wld have been miniscule infront of calamity of such an extent.. so we had a chance to show our self esteem ( last reason is purely what i believe)

I gave IIMA interview on 12th Feb... all of us (the ppl called at 9:00 am) wrote the Roll. no. (top right somewhere) in the four digit block required in the form and also verified it with a gentleman at the IIM. I personally called up IIMA before the interview and I was asked to write the Roll. no. preceded by the appropriate number of zeros.

All the Best to you all...

question: why did india refuse....
My personal feeling is that this thread shud be used to carry discussion pertinent to the actual experiences of the ppl who've been thru the GD/PI process at IIMA for the 2007 batch. It wud be useful to stick to the main topic and post other material in appropriate threads... might not seem such a big deal right now, but when a lot of ppl would post their experiences, it wud be difficult to look for these posts among a lot of other material... Moreover, these queries have a higher probability of getting better answers in their respective threads.
Just my own views on the matter.

I thought that I thought, therefore I was, but then I thought that had I not thought, would I be not? Then I realized, I think BECAUSE I am.

Yeah, I had a related Q though, about "why not phoren edu etc" which did involve a chunk of my SoP, but then it wasn't quite the same.

Dunno why they aren't doing this. Also can't figure out the reason behind 90% tech intrvws as a guy told me he had.
