Gd/PI experience - 15-02-2005, 05:01 PM

hi guys,
Here is my contribution to the thread. Had my GD/interview on the 13th Feb at IIMA (9:00 am). Reached the insti by around 8:45 am and was among the last ones among the interviewees.
The case was about two companies A and B(cant remember the names ). The company A is the major producer of two wheelers and is known for its quality products. Company B is the major suppliers of accesories and other intermediate goods to A. Some figures on their sales and profits. B is a reputed firm and is a supplier to a number of firms outside the country. Though A is its only client in India and has a major share in its sales. A person called Ravi joins the firm A and is incharge of the procurement division dealing with company B. One of the employees of company B invites him to a dinner and gifts him a costly watch worth around Rs. 1 lakh. He says that it has been a common practice and even his seniors/predecessors have accepted them in the past. What should Ravi do?

The discussion was pretty peaceful. There were seven members and everyone had a fair say more or less. In hindsight i think i could have done better. Came in thrice. Made my own point once and the rest were addons to wat others said. We were given three-four minutes to summarise. At the end of it we were asked to stop writing at once for even a word extra would lead to penalty. I couldn't complete the sentence i was writing and had to leave it midway

Not very satisfied with the GD, i came out with others and was asked to wait after submitting marksheets and stuff. i was the first mullah to be called in. There were three members in the panel. One old man(P1) and two ladies(P2 and P3) and ofcourse myself(K).
Round of smiles and good mornings ensued.
P1: Make yourself comfortable (also offered me a buscuit). So what stage of ur academics are u in?
K: (was still busy with the buscuit so placed it halfconsumed on my plate to answer) sir, final semester of my four year course.
P1: Wat do u have in ur final year?
K: named the courses and the project
P1: So you must have had some courses on mathematics?
K: Yes sir in our first three sems we had one course each sem on maths.
P1: how did u do in them??
K:i thought i did preety well. (Fearing the backlash that "pretty" part might unleash, went on to add that i am not sure how much of it i remember now(with a smile).
P1: Well anyway we dont want to test ur memory. so why dont u solve a quetion.
A question on minimum distance between two points on the xy plane touching the x axis. Why do u think the derivative will yield a minima and not maxime. I talked about the second derivative test but he said is there a logical way. I said maxima will anyway be infinity and any finite solution will give the minima.
P1:Good. That seems logical. Wat if the interval was bounded and not an open one.
K: replied that preety well.
He seemed satisfied with the answer. Gestured towards the other two ladies to proceed and laid back on his chair to relax(and remained so through out the rest of the interview).
P2: (who was going through my file all this while) questions on some of the competitions i had participated in. Why i got the third prize in one of them and not the first??
K:Replied them with much ease.
P2(the middle lady gets into the act now. Looks very sophisticated by her looks and had been looking at me intently) wat do like to read(my hobby)? Why is it that animal farm is your best book??
K: explained it to her well. Use the words "subtle humor and irony" and she asks me to name an instance from the book which had these and explain. this i managed well.
P2:u like macroeconomics. How did u develop an interest??talk about the coming budget and the last one
K: said some stuff.
P1: wat do u think hit the middle class the most in the last one??
K: service tax increase..umm..no tax on taxable income upto1lakh..gift tax on gifts upto 25k to check tax evasion...(P1 does not look very satisfied)
P1:anything other than service tax and more service iinto tax net??
K: 2%cess of education.
P1: do u think it is justified to tax more if the allocate sum remains underutilized??
K: some fatte on long term impact on growth and social inftra..implamentation has got to improve too..
P1:difference between freedom struggle and terrorism??
K: more a matter of perception.
P1:views on Kashmir and how is it different from the palestine??
K:had some idea on the palestinian case so handled it well.
P1:dont u think its correcting a historical wrong(the zionist movement)??
K: Mam, but that is something that happened 2000 years back.
want to say more but interrupted by their laughters and smiles.
Another round off BOL and thanx followed. Insisted on me taking all the buiscuits which i did with a sheepish smile and thanx again. Offered the chocolates which i decline politely.

That is about it. Lasted about 25 minutes. Very cool panel.
Hope it is of some help to fellow pg junta. Any comments are welcome

thanx

Vishy @ IIM A : The Interview - 15-02-2005, 09:43 PM

Moi final yr Electrical at Sardar Patel, Mumbai Univ.
__________________________________________________ _______________
Three panelists, very nice, aim to make me comfy... from L-R Old Guy (Ole) Middle aged Guy ( Mid ) Silent guy (Sil)

Mid : (all nice with smiles all over) come have a seat.

Moi : (all smiles too, and sits down)

Mid : (makes some comment abt coconut water being spilled on my seat and laughs)

Moi : he he

Ole : Gimme ur file.

Moi : (gives)

Mid : So, tell me something about yourself.

Moi : (oh no, not this question. tells him abt things, neatly moving on to books)

Mid : Ah, but what books, everyone reads books like Asimov.

Moi : ( excuse me, Asimov ? Man, he's THE KING ... ur talking like he wrote pulp) I did start of with the usual fiction as a kid, but for the last few years, I've really enjoyed reading books with meaning, with much more than entertainment value. Take Maugham for instance.

Mid : Oh.

( some general conversation abt Maugham, moves on to Bernard Shaw, Paramahansa Yogananda and philosophy, with a cameo from PG Wodehouse for some reason. Nice convo, with Mid gently asking the Qs)

Mid : What subjects do you like ? Tell me someting abt ur subjs

Moi : (ow, here it comes... )

( Talk moves around networks ( electrical ). Again, moi moves smoothly, in a natural course of the conversation onto my project )

Moi : Err ... i'll give you a backgrounder on harmonix, if ya dont get me, pl do ask

Mid : (smiles) sure

Moi : ( builds a decent scene of harmonix, what I'm doing, why, the relevance of the project, the effects of harmonics)

Mid : ( directs talk to what I'm doing, how much of practical work etc )

Moi : (tells him that, coupla more relevant questions from Mid, laymanish but interested laymanish... so have to be lucid ... handled... hell, i KNOW my project)

Mid : (Smiles and turns to Ole) Would you like to ask now ?

Ole : Tell me, is something happening in Nepal ?

Moi : (duh!) Yep, blah blah, Gyanendra Blah blah.

( Set of questions on why who when what, focus shifts to India, why we're doing, whar're we doing, why not this, that, what else, where do you see Nepal in 5 yrs. Handled pretty much everything, even remembered a statistic abt India's contribution to the RNA's expenses Only one flummox ... "Have we done anything else to sub Nepal")

Now, twas Sil's turn.

Sil : What about other education options, esp phoren education ?

Moi : ( builds answer around SoP/interests, and a nice indirect reference to "IIM A are cool" and "I cracked the CAT" very indirect, but then there you go. )

Mid : Good, good, (smiles broadly ) take a toffee.

Moi : Thankoo ( gets up, smiling, shakes hands with all 3 and exits)

__________________________________________________ _______________

Good conversation and a damn pleasant experience, but dunno what's gonna come of it. Its IIM K next.

Note : The conversation was not exactly as described. A few different words here and there. And a coupla nice explanations going unmentioned. This is the gist of it though.

Note this too : Comments, can be stacked on me blog too

My name Rahul Abraham Mamman
Background - Bcom Third Year...
Also involved in my family biz..a pharmacy and a health and beauty store...
Went to see IIM A as I had given my centre as IIM A itself and very few ppl from cochin would have done that..
10th CBSE 89.2
12TH CBSE 86.4
Bcom 74 (But that s becoz English and Hindi are added...CGPA Would be 8.7 with Univ topper )
Cat percentile 99.87 VA 99.09 QA 99.7 DI 97.55

First was the GD ....There were 2 gals and six of us guys....we had time to interact for 20 mins before the interview..hence it was a good experience

The GD started of well..all of us spoke ..all of us contributed..and our brainstorming seemed to be good...and there was absolutely ...absolutely no problem with anyone during the GD ..The points were all good..and many added on to the orginal points too

Now I was no 8 ....I had nt given my certificate copies yet..They told me I could give it along with my interview.
So everyone had a decent interview..with Major C with 17 years of Army experience and 100 percentile in Cat ...was having a ball of time there with the panel..
Finally it was my turn
One of the proffies came to call me
I go in with a smile and wish them all ..they were all nice guys...

First question to me (I cant number them as I dont remember who asked me what ..I will try and give as accurate an account as possible )

Q What is one difficulity and one good thing that was present in keeping the venue for the GD PI at this new block ?

A Sir . The good thing was that I could come through the underpass ...Though I feel they could have had a straight passage ..walking through the underpassage was indeed a great experience .and there were a lot of things about IIMA in that passage and it was really informative...The difficulity that I encountered was that it was too far from the entrance and I did get lost at first

Q Are you from Ahmedabad

Ans No sir I m from Cochin (The proffie seemed a little suprised )

Q Why did you give IIM A as your centre ?

A It was been my dream to be in IIM A.. I have heard through people and read a lot about IIM A..I know it is the best institute..but I wanted to experience first hand what it feels like to be at IIMA..And Also I have a few friends in IIM A.

Q Did you do the same from IIM C :-x

A No sir ..I have only done that for IIM A

Q So what are you doing now

A I am in my third year of Bcom

Q What is your favourite subject ?

A I m reasonably comfortable with Capital Markets

Q What are capital markets ?

A It is the market for the buying and selling of shares and Debentures..It s the market through which the capital for the companies are raised .

Q What is a stock ?

A It is a certificate giving ownership of the company ., they can be given dividends when the company makes profits.

Q Why do people give money for these pieces of paper like debentures.?

A These debentures carry a fixed rate of return and these holders of these debentures will def get a certain fixed income in the form of money every year..
It can also be of the redeemable form

Q But why do they still accept these papers ..and nothing else is given ?

A Sir, These certificates have legal validity and they can be enforced by law hence it is quite a safe instrument to invest in .

Q What is the IPO market ?

A It s the market for intial public offering ..and it s when the company issues shares for the first time.

Q What is Primary markets ?

A It includes private placements also and IPO is part of the Primary market.

They ask me a little more in detail about the differences between Primary and IPO Market..I tell them that this is what I know and I m sure that there is more to it.

Next question is about
Bonus shares..
Q What are bonus shares

A The shares issued by the company free of cost to it s shareholders is known as bonus shares...It is issued sometimes in lieu of dividend.when the company has not been paying any cash dividend

Q Are bonus shares issued by companies which havent given any dividends so far ?

A Not that..but it is also issued by companies which have a good deal of reserves after the capitalisation also ..even if they have been giving a lot of dividends so far

Q Are all share holders treated separtely in terms of dividend payouts ?

A No sir .The preference shareholders are treated differently. They get only a fixed rate of return on their shares.

Q What about other share holders..can a particular company not give dividend to a group of the shareholders ?

A No that is not possible all shareholders have to be given equal treatment and dividend if given should be given to every single shareholder .

Q Suppose a company wants to make fresh issue what will it do ?

A It will have to approach the company law board get their permission and then can issue shares in the markets ..It can go in for rights issue where the present owners are given the right to purchase the shares first.

Q What would your company do if u wanted to list in the stock exchange.?

A First get approval from the Company Law Board..Meet all legal requirements..also approach the stock exchange and get permission so that you could list on the stock exchange.

Q What is deferred tax ?

A I start off on accounting tax ..and stop and say I m not sure..about this ..but I know what deferred revenue expenditure is '

Q Ok but what is miscellenous expenditure?

A I talk about what it is and how it comes about ..

Q Which head does it come under?

A I said these are shown sometimes in the balance sheet under the asset side these are actually fictitious assets .

Q What counterbalances it on the liabilty side ?

A I dont know that sir ..I used my hand to show the side on the balance sheet and they joked about it..and I smiled too

Q What is your family biz ?

A It is a pharmacy in cochin sir..we also have a lifestyle store..which stocks baby care..cosmetics..perfumes and a lot of ayurvedic stuff..

Q What is the return on investment

A The ROI is about 20 percent

Q What is the trade deals given in Cochin for the pharmacy ?

A The pharmacy is given 30 days of credit. and also 4 percent discount of ready cash .

Q What role does the association play in the state ?
I talk about the margins we get becoz the association

Q What is the margin in the other states..
Same margin as in Kerala

Q How does the association help then ?
It makes sure that we get 20 percent margin for new product..and old margins exist..Also becoz of our association we can return our medicines on time of expiry and within three months and get money back .

Q Why do u have two differenet stores cant u have it together
A I talk about numerological reasons and also about two different classes of customers being attracted to the different shops..

Q how does the second store work
I explain it s a volume biz..with high value low no of bills et al

Q How are your margins normally
I say 18 -20

Q So is that what you meant by ROI ?
I explain saying that s not what I meant
and told them the orginal ROI was indeed correct..

Q What do u mean by Tie and Die method

A I dont about that Sir

Q How is curd made ?
Milk and Curd ..Gyaan

Q Which of it has microbes..
A Curd..

Q Are they live ?
A I think :whatthat:

Q What is this process called ?

A Fermentation

Q How is it related to the pharma industry ?
(Now I know about Insulin)
A It can be used to make red wine capsules...talk abou how the dried powder is made into the capsule form

Q What are these used for
A For preventing Heart disease

Q How is the powder made?

A By drying it up after the fermentation process.

Q How is made into the capsule ?
A The powder is then encapsulated
Q What are your other interests ?
A I m a member of the numismatic society ...They confirm whether it s coins itself

Q Why do you collect coins ?
A It s passion ..knowledge gathering experience...more gyaan ...

Q Where do you get the coins
From the antique shops and also by exchanging with friends in my society ..

Q Which is the oldest coin that you have seen ?
A A BC silver roman coin

Q Did nt you pick it up :-x
A Sir it was too expensive did nt have 3.5k at that time

Q Is it still there in that shop ?
A I have nt gone for some time to that shop ..I m not too sure sir ..

Q So tell us what have you learnt about coins ?
A Where and which countries ruled others ...the cultures...for eg France ruled Algeria...(I really dont know why I said that )

Q Where is Algeria ?
A North Africa....

Q What is it s currency ?
A Francs....

Q When did Algeria get it s independence ?
I dont know for sure sir ...(One of the sirs say what s the point in collecting coins if you do not know the date of independence of Algeria .....I defend myself by saying a lot of commerative coins and their importance )

Q What are these double metal coins ..(Coins with two colours ..)
I explain to them and then one of them ask me about any contempory double metal coins..
I talk about the euro and the 2 pound coins which are double metal coins

Q Did u win the table tennis title for the district ?
A Yes..sir ..he asks for my certificates..looks at them all and says that I have done extra stuff only in school
Then I show him the College Commerce Sect stuff..also that I did nt have the certificates for the College thing hence did nt write much about..it
They seemed satisfied...I dont know why ...

I think I have a 50 percent chance

I think that s the gist of what happened ...
if u guys have any comments on my post ..plz do feel free to do so..also if you ppl think my post should be shortened ..I will do that....bbye for now
