Well, consider this.
In my IIMA panel, 1 guy came late for the gd. He missed the GD but the panel gave him his PI.

iima case study/pi - 22-03-2005, 01:05 PM

profile:
X: 85% (CBSE)
XII: 78% (CBSE)
CPI: 8.36 (IITG)
CAT: 98.14%

extra-curriculars: no sports in coll, a bit of event-organization

usp: HARDCORE tech-buff

case study: somebody has already mentioned in this same thread - about the coll fest. this one too was a repetition from last year (the other rep was the sweetmeat thing). didn't speak much, listened well wouldn't rate it (my performance) highly.

pi: three guys, one sure-shot iima prof (who grilled on acads, call him 1), second was probably an alumnus (for checking general awareness, call him 2), third too was an iima prof (checked my reasoning, thoroughness, call him 3). oh, i have missed my own number. since i am more fundamental than those three, i shall represent myself with 0 (kind of like the zeroth law of thermodynamics).

3 opens the door - first eye-contact, and i make an ally in him god! if i could repeat that look of reverence in my eyes!

note: all that's in [] brackets was spoken without words, and all that's not was perceived as sound waves in the following dialogue, repeated verbatim. () brackets give explanatory notes.

1: please give me your file. please sit.
0. thank you. [felt like i'd missed something, so...] sir
1.let's talk about something that always comes up when we talk of operating systems (one of my interests). what has microsoft been in the news for, recently?
0. i haven't seen anything related to microsoft in the papers recently but are we talking about the release of longhorn, or the financing of software start-ups in bangalore, or the europe lawsuit?
1. yes, the europe lawsuit. (now i don't even know if a lawsuit has been filed, but they sure want to keep microsoft out. anyway...)
0. sir, that's because they're stifling the software market in europe by giving out free software.
1. ok. why do you think microsoft is always in trouble?
0. trouble meaning operating system problems or legal action? (i expected the latter)
1. operating system problems.
0. sir, they don't have any problems now. (linux is my favorite os, and i've mentioned it). it runs as well as linux if you look at the response time, swap memory, ram used, processor usage, apps handled... (didn't go to security because i knew he could screw me on mac and solaris)
1. have you heard of mac?
0. [are you insulting me?] i have, sir.
1. why is mac so much better than windows?
0. they spend a lot on research, have their own hardware, and so they are able to integrate it very well.
1. you know, intel and microsoft have been around for many years as major players, why don't they integrate it well?
0. they have to mantain backward-compatibility with their own products and also for the other's...
1. i'm not convinced.
0. sir, b-compatibility is certainly an issue that results in lower preformance (in hindsight, i should've taken them to itanium and amd's 64 bit processor. darn). apart from that, apple and microsoft target different market-segments. look at
the research-spends...
1. ok. can you draw a graph for this quad =n?
0. definitely, sir [draw it].
1. right. integrate it.
0. [giving him the sheet] sir.
1. why is the integral cubic? i mean, it bugs me that integral should have an extra order.
0. [man, do i LOOK STUPID?!] because you find the area by mutiplying y and x [showed him strips], and y increases as x-square... (explain well)
1. good. take over, mr. 3
3. sameer, why do you think they tell you to switch off your phones when you're flying?
0. (this guy's got a trace of foreign accent, probably us-educated). because of interference, sir?
3. no, i tell you that's not the reason.
0. terrorist threat? or are you asking about the technical problems associated with handovers?
3. yes, the latter.
0. i'm not sure, but logically, it would...(give him fundae about what should happen.)
3. ok. what is the solution to this problem? i want to remain connected when i fly, you know.
0. sure, sir. leave the problem to me. (explain about the latest logical solutions.)
3. sameer, i want to know what advantages i have with this new solution you just explained.
0. better connectivity (explain why, and more)
3. and?
0. [thinking a bit, but it's so obvious...] battery savings.
3. [impressed, smiles] good! take over, mr. 2
2. have you heard of louis figo?
0. [i'd have to be deaf not to have heard of him]. yes, sir.
2. who is he?
0. ex-captain of portgal's footy team.
2. who does he play for, now?
0. i don't know, sir.
....
....
(much arbit stuff on useless general awareness asked, couldn't answer most)
2. so you're a tech-jock?
0. [smiling] you could say so, sir.
2. all right, thank you for the interview.
0. thank you, sir.
3. all the best to you.
0. thank you, sir.

if they're looking for a tech-buff with loads of attitude, i know i'm in. general awareness of that particular form is not my forte, hope they don't reject me for that reason. (it would be a BIG loss to them )

( i have missed some parts of the conversation, but it all revolved around my answers and what i was supposed to know. all of that went well)

sn

my own iima exp - 25-03-2005, 01:23 AM

hi guys.
my venue : IIFT New Delhi, 24 Feb ( seems like it was aeons back!)
me, fresher CSE from IITK
CPI 8.7
99.99 %-ile .
All calls.

In my panel. Out of 8, 1 was absent, 6 were from IITK !

The GD topic has already been posted. It was about a manager trying to introduce some innovation and the GM later balking at it. The order has already been placed, so what does this poor chap do.!??!

I wouldn't rate my performance at the GD well. Hope the panelists disagree.

The interview:
[Questions and answers are differently colored]
--------------------------
So, Vyom, you have come all the way from Kanpur.

Yes Sir

So, when did you reach Delhi?

Last evening Sir.

Is it as cold in Kanpur as it is in Delhi?

No Sir, Its a little warmer there.

There's a lot of warming happening all over. Do you know about it?

Global Warming.

Yeah, Global Warming... Something is been done about it. Do you know?

Yes Sir . Kyoto protocol has recently been put in place to ensure that the amount of emissions are kept under a limit.

Who all have signed it and who have not?

It has been ratified by most countries including India. US and Australia have refused to sign it.

Why and from whom is it facing the resistance?

Sir, its facing resistance from some quarters in the industry which think industrial growth would be affected.

Has India signed it?

Yes Sir.

What does India need to do about it?

Basically keep its greenhouse emissions under control and enforce pollution emission control norms. Beyond this, I don't know more about the implementation issues.

So, how do you rate your own performance in GD? On a scale of 5?

I would rate it 2.5

That would be below average?

No Sir, I mean from 0 to 5, making an average of 2.5

What do you attribute it to?

At times, what I wanted to say had just been said by someone else, and I avoided trying to repeat exactly what had been said.

Ok, so you want to be a manager?

Yes Sir, and I find the area where technology meets management more interesting - the management aspect of technology.

"The management of technology"? -- guffaw-- So is there a technology aspect of management as well? Explain what you have said.

Sir, I meant to say, there can be 2 aspects, one hard core research sitting in a laboratory. The other is, that aspect of technology that actually appears in the market and is used by the masses.

But not much of this happens in Computer Science.. isn't it?

No Sir, if there are inventions, then they also directly affect the markets.

"Inventions"?

Sir, I mean, breakthroughs. For example, breakthroughs in algorithms.

Ok, so you are a CS student and you talk of algorithms. Suppose I have a list of all CAT students sorted on their marks, and I want to find out a student with marks say, 75. how will you do it?

Sir, we will try to see the marks of the middle student...

"Middle student"?

Sir, I mean, if there are 'n' students, then the marks of the student ranked n/2.

Do you know how many students appear for the CAT?

Yes Sir, approximately 1.5 lacs.

Hmm. Ok, proceed.

So, we try to see the marks of the 75000th student and compare it and then ... blabber...

How many searches will it take?

Sir, it will take log to the base 2 of 1.5 lacs. which is around 17.

How do you get the log value?

Sir, 1000 is approx 2 raised to 10. and this is 150 thousand, 150 is roughly 2 raised to 7 .

No, no. How does 'log' come into the picture?

Sir, in each step we are reducing the search space by 2. So we are exponentially reducing the search space.

So if there is exponent, you bring in log?

No Sir... blabber..

I still don't get it. Prove.

...Blabber...

Ok Ok.

It seems you like word puzzles and all.

Yes Sir.

Hmm. Ok I am giving you a puzzle. -- A Word Morph -- You have 2 minutes to solve.

( Puzzle --> go from MILK to CURD ) (2 minutes later --)

Ok, lets see how much you have been able to do.

Anyway, why do you think people like to play word puzzles?

I think it is the feeling of being able to overcome an obstacle, especially when one is not initially able to solve a problem and gradually is able to do that, then it gives a satisfaction.

But that is true of any sport. What's special about word games? With all this time limits and all?

I think they also make you think faster, so they hone your skills in that.

But that would be true of quizzes as well?

Yes Sir, but taking the case of crossword puzzles. I regularly come across things that I don't know and then I look up about that in an encyclopedia and learn about it. This way I am able to learn a lot of new things.

Ok. I guess that's it. So you are going back to Kanpur?

No Sir, I am going on a trip to Shimla.

Oh, it must be cold there.

Yes Sir, precisely the reason why we are going.

But you must be having other interviews?

Yes Sir, but they are later in March.

Ok, best of luck for them. You may have your toffee.

Thank You Sir. <Huff>

---------------
And once out of the interview room, I was able to solve the word morph in a little under a minute.
Dunno what to make of it !

Sorry for being late! - 25-03-2005, 03:00 AM

Vikas Kumar
IIT Kanpur
CPI 8.4
99.99 percentile Six Calls

Case study: Topic has already been mentioned by some one.. Since we were only six people(2 people did not come ) and one did not speak we had ample time..I made few good entries and would rate the performance as OK

Interview: Three panel members....P1, P2, P3
P1 used to smile a lot..P2 was looking at my certificates and P3 did not seem to be interested!

P1: So Vikas many IITK students have come today? Have you studied together?
ME: Yes sir, every one has been called today only .. No, I have done self study for CAT(lied big time )

P1: Ok let say I have to find out the number of individuals getting calls from atleast one IIMs...How will you estimate the number?
ME: Sir, I will take the datas of coaching institutes ... explained a bit .... but I had a flaw in my logic which was pointed out by him...
ME: took some 15 some seconds and said that I will do some sampling..I will make segments of different percentiles and different profiles..Based on the sample I can extrapolate the value..
P1: Smiling, ok so what will be the sample size?
ME: Sir, since I presume that the estimation need not be very accurate, a sample size of 5% of the population seems good to me
P1: seemed satisfied..ok what is the time complexity of quick sort?
ME: talked of worst case and average case..
P1: 3-4 counter questions on algorithm time complexity...
ME: answered well and confidently(I guess!)
P2: Vikas, we have heard so much of developed economy..what defines an economy as developed one?
ME: Talked of Human Development Index
P2: What is percapita income?
ME: GDP/Population later said its NNP/Population
P2: :whatthat: What is the difference between GDP and NNP?
ME: Answered correctly
P2: Name the top 3 country with the highest percapita income?
ME: Sir, I do not know but atleast one scandinavian country is there
P2: What are scandinavian countries
ME: Norway, Finland and sweden
P2: Are you sure?
ME: Yes sir (later came to know that Denmark is also there)
P2: Name the state with the lowest literacy rate?
ME: Bihar
P2: What is the literacy rate of bihar?
ME: 47 %
P2: Female and Male literacy rate of Bihar?
ME: around 35-40 % for females and 55% for males
P2: Name another basis to distinguish between literacy rates?
ME: Since bihar is quite caste and class conscious, this can be a good basis(wanted further discussion but they had other ideas)
P2: Highest literacy rate?
ME: Kerala
P2: Second Highest Literacy rate?
ME: Mizoram
P2: what is the literacy rate?
ME: Around 90 %(88% is the correct answer)
P2: He did not seem to be satisfied
P3: (wakes up from his sleep) name two active areas of research in computer science?
ME: Talked of grid computing and next generation of computers based on AI.
P3 and P1: What is intelligence or AI?
ME: Sir, since I have not done any course on AI. So, I may not be accurate but according any thing that mimicks human intelligence should be intelligent system(what a stupid answer!)... and then talked of neural networks which I had heard from my friend at IITK.
P3: Suppose you are sent to a village what will be the power source for your computer?
ME: Sir, solar power though I am not very sure?
P3: Why you are not sure?
ME: May not be economically feasible
P3: ok go on!
ME: sir ups
P3: How will that be recharged
ME: Sir, solar power;-)
P3: any other power source
ME:I cant think of any other source
P3: Should there be promotion of IT in villages?
ME: yes sir
P3: Why?
ME: Weather reports and cropping patterns..
P3: one can get the same information from newspapers?
ME: Sir but it will not be real time weather report?
P3: (amused) do you mean to say that if there is going to rain in the next hour, you will change the cropping pattern..
ME: Realized my mistake... and tried to cover it up by talking of getting good market information about the inputs for farming and the final produce..
P3: but if the people are not literate how will they use them?
ME: Sir, we can have a system installed for a group of villages and an operator for each system. A villager can approach the operator to get any information.
P3: Ok, give me the speed of the fastest memory?
ME: Did not get what he was saying took some time and assuming something I came out with some answer after some analysis.. Was expecting them to pound me after this but it seemed either they did not know or they were not interested in the answer.
P3: asked to integrate (e)^(e)^x?
ME: Was not expecting and did some stupid rough work..
P3 quickly taking the sheet back said do you like maths?
ME: Yes sir
P2: why is your cpi decreasing in 3rd year?
ME: talked of my projects
P2: can you justify such a steep fall(7.8 in 3rd year and 9.0 in 1st and 2nd year) based on your projects.
ME: talked some more crap.
P1: Vikas You got 38 rank in IIT and 0.1 % merit certificate in english? Which do you think is a greater achievement?
ME: IIT has opened lots of opportunities for me and some more crap!
P1: talk about your personal satisfactions...
ME: gassed some more
P1: Smiling thank you!
P2: ok one last question name the states through which river kaveri passes
ME: TN and Karnataka?
P2: AP?
ME: Not sure, but probably a narrow stretch
P1:sad:smiling) what about kerala an maharashtra
ME: No sir
P1: ok thnx
Seeing that they have not offered me chocolates, I started taking one
P2 said I am sorry please take two...
ME: Thanks sir

That was IT... I committed far too many blunders and was expecting some questions on current affairs, my projects and BTP. This is the only hope after a truly disastrous performance in IIMC. Guys plz comment on it....and vyom thanks for reminding me to post my experience!

Vikas
