Guys, do NOT flood every single thread......Let the folks come up with their experiences...Am sure everyone is interested in knowing......But if we are gonna see 20 replies after every single xp, then we prolly would have to delete all those posts.....Just to avoid clutter folks

Cheers

Vishy @ IIM A : The GD - 13-02-2005, 12:30 PM

Mine was at 2pm Feb 12 @ IIM A. Got sodomised on 11th evening by Nirav in Shrijit's room.

Mock interview

So had a pretty nervous night and morning. Filled the form an hour before I left for the intrvw Of course, had the ideas in rough...

At 1:45 we had our names confirmed and assigned to one of the three panels. On the dot at 2pm, walked in for the GD.

2 panelists... very nice guys. As hanoz said, 5 mins to think, 20 to disc, 5 to write a summary. The case was there printed, face down in front of us.

Went something like this ... some darned ethical socially responsible company..Sun Cements in a country- Sunland, producing 9m tonnes of the country's total capacity of 15m. The demand is 18m. Some ethical code like not hiking prices during shortage, always catering to regular customers and stuff.

In comes Noble ( or was it Nobel ) Constructions Ltd (NCL) with a proposed project of constructing roads for the country's capital. Which means the its has a "good for the country, society" thing about it. They need 90ktonne this year and 100ktonne next. NCL are supposed to be a not so straight fwd company.

So what should the GM of Sun ( Zubair was his name right ? ) do ? One option - import at $2000 / tonne and sell at market rate of $1500. Yeah, ethical and stuff rite, so oughta sell at usual rate.

Pretty predictable flow, some idiotic ideas did come thru ( like hell to the regular customers, lets aid NCL and glory to our name ). Wasnt a terribly polite or organised GD like hanoz's sounds, just an okayish one.

Were assigned the order for the intrvw ( acc to the GD numbers ) asked to come back allowing for 20mins/intrw.

Almost 3 days since I touched the comp, with the cameo on shrijit's longhorn ignored. So catch the intrvw xp in the next episode of ... "Vishy @ IIM A"

grammatical/spelling errors above, if any, to be ignored. Author in a not so comfortable state after a cramped 1.5 hrs in a funny little Deccan Air thingy with props stickin out not to mention a lone stewardess and a single sandwich onboard. Had to pay for it. For the sandwich I mean

Me at Ahmedabad, 12th Feb 2 p.m.

3 panels, and I think 8 candidates per panel. GD starts off on the dot, they give us 5 minutes to read the case, 20 minutes to discuss and (a surprisingly quick) 5 minutes to jot down a summary in paragraph form.

GD is about a cement manufacturing company, who are the major players in the cement market in that country(produce 9m tonnes out of total capacity of 15m tonnes). Very ethical co, blacklist those clients who are proven to blackmarket cement etc.

1996 they do very well, make a profit of 5 billion USD on sales of 26 billion. 1997 demand increases to 18m tonnes. Their policy on increased demand is usually that they allot certain amounts to regular customers.

Now a new construction company(who is believed to have a bad track record) approaches them for 90,000 tonnes of cement that year, to build a highway/road (so the project is of national importance. They have also intimated that they will need 100,000 tonnes the next year.

One option is to import and sell cement, making a loss of 500 dollars per ton.

What should the manager do?

Calm GD ,a few times there was more than one person talking, but everyone respects others’ right to talk, quite a few points came up. They stop us after 20 min, we write a summary (barely anyone in our group could finish it)

So that was the GD.

PI wasn’t such a breeze for me.

3 panelists(P1, P2, P3) and poor moi M.

as I walk in, P2 leaves the room.

P1: good to know you are not in software like everyone else. Hehe

P3: yes, yes, very good. hehe

M: hehe, hehe.

P1: okay, so where do you work? How many months? What does your company do? Is it a part of L&T infotech?

M: I tell them…

P3: let me have a look at your certificates

M: sure sir (gives him the certificates)

(The role of P3 ends there. Throughout the interview he is looking at the certis)

P1: (he’s a techie) Did you have a look at the campus? How will you design a network for this place?

M: based on blah, blah, blah…

P1: okay, what are the different components of a network?

M: starts an answer that is correct, articulates badly, and goes tangential trying to explain each term of my sentences.

P2 has returned.

P1: what is the difference between a switch and a router? What is a router used to do.

M: tells him the correct answer badly, like a bad teacher in engg college does.(and I have mentioned in the form that I like to teach. darn!)

P1: what is wireless LAN, its components, speeds, limitations

M: finally formulates an answer well.

P1: have you heard of any indigenous wireless LAN technologies?

M: No...

P1: Cordect?

M: No...

P1: Ashok jhunjhunwala?

M: No...

Looks at P2.

P2: you have written ‘marketing’ and ‘survey’ in your form. Tell me if I have to market an FMCG product, how will you go about it?

M: ( a little taken aback, because I had mentioned marketing technical solutions and site survey to get number of network points etc. decides to answer anyway)

Is it a new product? Existing?

P2: take you pick

M: Can I take a min.

P2: sure..

M: (thinks) maybe a spray on starch, instead of solution

P2: yes yes, they already have it in foreign companies..

M: oh ok..anyway..i will have a format for the survey form, ask people how happy they are with the current product, what will be their reaction to new product, and how much they would be willing to pay for it.

Then I will distribute the survey acc to market segments-rural urban-economic strata etc and depending on where I get most positive response from, I will price product.

P2: can u not think of any other strategies?

M: no madam, none right now..

P2: okay, you have said you like reading. What kind of books?

M: tells them

P2: favorite fiction, what’s the story? author?

M: tells them…

P3(speaking after a LONG time): okay, thank you.

M(to P2): one thing madam..

P2: yes?

M: when I was talking about survey, I meant the site survey that we conduct to obtain network requirement..

P2: okay.

P1, P2, P3 in unison: take chocolate, take samosa, u can take the plate and leave.

M: thank you, thank you.

Phew! That was how it went. Me thinks not too great… what say?

Hi,
First of all, congratulations 2 u on sailing thru some of the questions which could have posed a problem (red speedbrakers or rathers edge of the cliff)..!!

Ur interview looks fine, though i must admit, does not look very optimistic but at the same does not look very bad either. Maybe they were just looking for some forcefulness in ideas(i say this, recollecting that they asked u some other strategy for selling the product). A different strategy could have been better. but then again..

In any interview, the interviewer takles the decision in the first 5-7 minutes, whether to take u in or throw u out. The rest of the 20 mins-half an hour is just to make himself sure whether he has made the right decision..!!

Cheers to that one

To tell u the truth, i guess, yours could turn ut to be the borderline cases wherein the candidate just about manages to pull through into the institute..

So all the very best and keep ur spirits high. God willing and me praying, u will definitely get in..!!

All the very best once again..!!

:snipersm: Every morning i go thru Forbes list of 40 richest Indians. If my name is not in there, i go to work..!!!:2gunfire:
