Electronics questions - 07-03-2005, 08:25 PM

1. What is the latest intel chip ?
2. Why (if at all) is the speed of a 16 bit Microprocecssor (or CPU) better than a 8 bit one? Are there any other advantages of a 16 bit version? What are advantages of 8 bit ?

methinks fastest is P4 3.73 Ghz
16 bit wud be better coz the accumulator can handle more data every time it exectues an instruction......

I blv there is also sum funda of pipelining in 16 bit version(8086)....there is a 6byte queue and wenever the data/address lines r free the pr gets data and stores it in queue....mostly during the instructions which have idle T states...

adios

Rohit's almost right about the PIV 3.73 XE or EE as it was known previously...'coz that Intel's latest high-end desktop chip... Your question may quite obviously mean dat..but d bloody Key Word Approach of GDs has been killing me...:P there are Intel chips faster than that in the desktop scenario itself...the PIV 570J for example is 3.80Ghz and is the fastest in terms of Mhz... Intel's processors are gonna get more confusing in da near future.. what wid more cache being slapped on and clockspeeds going down again to 3Ghz...
in d current world 8-bit procs have no advantages whtsoever, their architecture is easy to understand and thats why they are good examples for learning CPU architecture...dats all their use pretty much... 16-bit procs were in d era of 286s man! we've moved onto 64 now, as u wud know...though me still on good ole 32-bit..

when u say 16 bit or 8 bit microprocessor ,it means the data that it can handle at a particular instant of time,so obviously if the no of bits increases then the speed increases, the size of the accumalator register is equal to the no of bits.

8086 is 16 bit,80386 is 32 bit,80486 is 32 bit but with better cache,floating point unit etc.
while pentium2,3 is 64 bit and with definately with further improvement in cache,FPU,MMX registers etc.

for details read http://www.pcmech.com/show/internal/693/4

ciao

rinku

ps:me compu engg, could anyone get some info abt PENTIUM 4.

haan..first off..to continue this debate..but to shorten the chaos..as the next round of intrvws are gonna kick off soon..lemme say dis..>>

the Pentium 2,3,4 are not 64-bit processors!!!!! they are all IA-32 processors! the conventional and accepted usage of the word xx-bit processor is the no. of bits that can be stored in the registers of the processors and ofcourse then the no. of bit it can simultaneously work on..but more importantly the importance of 64-bit lies in the amount of memory that can be addressed...as u know memory addresses are also stored in the registers..so 32-bit can address 2^32 = 4GB of memory...but 64-bit can address 16TB of data!!!

Intel's 64-bit procs have been the Itanium series, and the soon to be released 6xx series..AMD's been faster at getting 64 to the desktop>>the Athlon64 and AthlonFX which use x86-64 architecture...do not say dat d PI-IV are 64-bit ...

Hi,

i had my iima i/v on 22nd feb at iift. it was a horrible experience and i have recovered from its effect now. anyways here is my experience.

As I told them that our product goes to sweden, they started asking me abt its currency, neighbouring countries, vikings etc. didn't know anything abt it. then they asked me abt the prices of various s/w products like SAP, MS Office etc. didn't even know that. just guessed some figures. after that they begun abt my final yr project. i spoke about it and answered the cross-questions. that was the only positive moment in the whole i/v. i dunno when they know that i don't know abt a particular thing why they keep on asking questions abt it only??

anyways atb to u all,
vaibhav
