Whatay Experiences!! - 26-02-2005, 06:39 PM

Now with my classes@IIM-A over, I've become a true vella tuccha. Really njoyed reading the gdpi exp. of junta & could very well relate to the feeling of chill that we all feel during the interview
Btw was amazed to find use of 2 words so imp. to the vocab list of IIM-A, for the gds:
Wimwi - U'll know the meaning of it & love it once u get here
Kamdhenu - U'll hate this name once u start doing the Quant. Manag.-1 course in 1st term
Good going guys, just remember 1 thing for interviews:
"Dont expect nekind of acceptance or denial on the faces of panel members. They will b usually like stone "
Best of luck to rest of ppl
Anuj

Well i think...people will only post their experince if it's been good..No one likes to recount their bad experience ...right?
So do not read too much into everyone at PG having a good interview at IIMA..their might be many with bad ones..just that they are not posted here...
there are always a few exceptions ofcourse..

mera GD - 27-02-2005, 03:47 PM

Hi peeps
had my IIM-A @ IIFT on 22nd Feb at 9 am... real sorry but cud not post earlier as was indiatrotting 4 other calls...
now moi left for the centre at 8:15 am from my abode in R K Puram as i was told Qutub insti area is quite near frm that place.
Reached there at 8:45 after a long ride thru cold n windy delhi --brr was it cold..My pa
who was along with moi 4 the interview kept on saying-"i told u so kaha tha coat pahan ke aana tha" --(i was wearing just shirt no sweaters even--are bhai in nagpur i just plugged in my water cooler on 20th)..
Totally red in the face frm the wind i entered the IIFt building--there were arnd 25-30
d00ds n d00detees there with the latter being arnd 10 % of the lot.... I was impressed with the building n all nd when i commented on da same to an INFOSYS chap he said--tis nothing when compared to his company--was I bamboozled !!!
Chalo the lobby looked real cool with gr8 sofas n clocks dispalying world time--singapore
n all--and moi started thinking shud hav given IIFT exam:huh:  !!
After chats with various peeps there(alomost every 2nd chap was frm Chandiagarh) there
came some profs who announced names and divided us into groups of 8 ---later got to know that there were 4 grps runing in parallel so 64 in a day and delhi had frm 21-28 i belive so that makes it 64*8=512 calls frm Delhi centre--must be ARND 50% OF THE LOT --

Enough BS --now to the GD--sorry case study(talking abt case studies got a letter frm IIMB saying that they r going to hav the same--just trivia donno kill me)..
Now in my grp there was one lady-Garima who has alreday posted hers and 7 non-ladies out of which
No1--garima--PEC Chandigarh--Metallurgy
No2--Supriyo Saha- IIT-R --civil
No3- A.Bansal --PEC Chandigarh--Mechanical
No4-Dhainchu Dhainchu aka Puneet Kaushik -Frm NIT-Nagpoor--Electronix
No5-now frm here onwards i hav forgotten the names except No6--Lokesh Vij frm
pathankot but again PEC-chandigarh...one trivia though --all were engineers and
except lokesh all were freshers--(though probably i was stinking)--sheesh wat a PJ-ugh

Now the case study was abt a reputed technical institute WIMWI which had been seeing
loads of palcements frm MNCs--big pay packets n lots --this year arnd the campus was good and offers ranged frm 35-40 lakhs frm MNCs to 4 lakhs frm Indian COs ...Now as Ibrahim--sheesh why i am typing this -u can read frm Garima's post but it waxall abt the composition of the reportto an eager-beaver media....----
Now our grp did okish n though at times there wsa diversion frm the topic n mated talked of changing the insti policy to develop luv of apna desh in stus and certain talk abt
long term n short term solutions---I mentioned the digression in the GD n made them come back to the report ..also said long term n short term is fine but Ibrahim is probably a final year student and he has just to submit this only once--so wat long term n short term???? Apart frm them grp agrred upon packaging the report subtly without hiding any facts--

i had decent GD and had ample airtime--no brawls in our group--enough 4 each and in the end i was looking at the panel and imploring to end our misery--one thing more i also raised the point of brand value of the institute and image of the insti in prospective students has the salarie packages as a major part of it--hope that is not in dispute with
ethics--yaar but case study n pacakges matter-(-nahin to Qutab insti main ek aur college
hai Rockford hospital ke samne--apne chicken counter vale bengali ka --usme admission le leta)

So that was the GD--i will break this post in 2 parts b coz now it has already started to look like a RC @Xlri..
So donno kill me 4 double post ...
Puneet

mera PI - 27-02-2005, 05:59 PM

SO now something abt my PI--- There were 3 chaps no female in the panel ....Let the legend be as
1..SI--south indian chap arnd 36 yrs old bearded n all-this gentleman ushered me in and then was consipicious by his absence(i luv throughing these phrases in) for 5 mins...
2..ONG-old nice guy--very soft spoken n intellectually looking--probably a bongo
3.MTE--moustached(sorry 4 bad spelling) tech expert--arnd 47 yrs of age asked loads of qus on tech
4.oops forgot to add myself --KH 4 khotahimachali

Now i entered dot at 11 0'clock n after the usual BS took the seat ..
ONG--so MR.kaushik u hav come alll the way frm Nagpur to Delhi??
KH-yes sir i hav..(shhesh wat a first ques):x
ONG--Why??
KH-sir mumbai nearest to nagpur was not a center(are kisi ko malum hai kya why?? )...
MTE--(interrupts in between)--wat abt Ahmedabad??
KH- blah blah abt delhi being known to me as i am frm himachal pradesh(wanted them to ask on that) and hav been to it loads of time--also it is nearer
by 3.33 hrs...
ONG-so wat is ur Final yr project??
KH--(mare gaye..though earlier sacricial lambs had talked abt this particular ceremony at the altar--so was prepared)--Image Processing
ONG--very interesting!!!being a mechanical engineer why u took it??
KH- sir but i am an electronics engineer!!!!(wat is this ???)
ONG--ohhh so will ask abt the proj later...At this moment tell us abt some latest developments in the electronics field??
KH-(yaar i can not desribe in words how glad i was on being let off the proj thing )--in communication or core electronics??
ONG--anything well do u know abt nanotech??
KH--no sir
ONG--heard of N-log,,it is a company
KH-naah
ONG--ok ok tell me abt bluetooth
KH-well i know abt Bluetooth,Irda,ISDN blah blah First of all let me tell u abt Bluetooth..blah blah blah loads of gyan 4 arnd 4 mins with them appering quite interested though i myself started getting bored ..in the meantime came SI and asked 4 my certificates frm MTE who had gone thru them earlier...taking this oppurtunity MTE barges in...
MTE--so which subj did u like best??
KH--(ab bakra katega:grab: ) Microprocessors..
MTE--why??
KH-- bcoz i like it--siad something abt it being contemperory..
MTE--contemperory..(looks at other panelists with an evil smile playing on his lips)--so what latest processorsdo u know abt??
KH--told them abt RISC ones like PAT-100,,supersparc n others..
MTE-wat abt P4??
KH--sir i know not much in detail just the basic architecture..
MTE--go on
KH--told em abt bus n address lines..was asked some on bus-wat it is and some more donno remember exactly..
MTE--so do u hav any idea abt the number of transistors on the chip of P4(this folllowed bcoz moi said something abt VLSI)
KH-sir i dunno know exactly but arnd 10^12 i guess
MTE-give me some name 4 that quantity??
KH-million billion
MTE--some other
KH-1000 giga??
the panel laughs he he he
KH--me sheepishly now i recall it vis tera
MTE--so wat is the size of the chip??
KH--arnd 5cm*3.5*1mm(just said some numbers ) actually the processor chip looks like (showed them by drawing in the air the approx size)
MTE--(frm my aerial drawing) are u sure that much is 5 cm??
KH--no sir i think i was wrong then,,it is arnd 1.5 inches
MTE--hw much is an inch??
KH-2.54 cms(now i am thinking yeh kahan aa gaye hum!!!)
SI--also in your form u hav said that u r filling this form is no small fry--(this i had given in the accomplishment ques)
KH--yup sir gav SOME ABT IIM a being gr8 insti and as a third pesron u rely on surveys and that recently it figured in top 100 of world
SI--so which survey?/
KH--i do not recall sir
SI--so anyone will say anything to ya n u will believe it??
KH--naah (am i that moron ) i read in a reputed magazine n just can not recall the name of the survey co..

MTE--so 10^12 transistors on 5*3.5 area chip!!!
KH--yes sir use of VLSI n nanotech enables that
MTE--ok take this piece of paper n calculate how much area wil each transistor get??
KH--did and got somethig like 10^-16 for each
MTE--wat is the radii of an atom??
KH--i do not know exactly but somewat in range of angstroms--
MTE-so wat is an angstrom??
KH--arnd 10^-10 cm
MTE--so we r getting less area than an atom ..how do P4 ppl make it happen
KH--sir as i mentiopned earlier i do not know much abt P4 --we only studied 8085 in my college
(smiles arnd the panel )
SI--u still study 8085??
KH--(with a shrug--oye mai ki karan je college ke pas paise nahin hain:huh: ??)--yup we do?/
ONG--can u tell me abt its architecture??
KH--i again go on a rampage 4 arnd 2 mins and lots of ques were aske din between abt multiplewxing of buses n the lot--do not dare to mention here
nahin to baki junta maregi--tronix guys can PM me if tat interested...
SI--so in your form u hav written one of ur fav authors is ENID BLYTON??
(the whole panel is again smiling--am i a joker ??)
KH--yes sir she is !!!
SI--but she writes children's books
KH--sir i am still very much a child and besides she writes really gr8..
SI--so which series of hers do u like best?/
KH--famous five
SI--can u name them
KH--did that
SH--so r these books good 4 children??
KH--yes sir they r..
SI-explain
KH--well as a begineer blah blah and ended with that she writes abt food a lot and children luv food...
SI--do they really??
KH--well sir i like n still do alot and my fren circle did..
(again smiles all around--mai aisa kyun hoon??)
SI-so do u know any author of children's boobks frm India??
KH--uhhhhh there is this author who lives in mussorie --yaaahh Ruskin Bond
SI--is he an Indian?/
KH--yup he took indian citizenship long time back...
SI--any other..
KH--nahh
SI--well there has been someone who has been in da news recently regarding indian citizenship
KH-yup it was Tasleema Nasreen..
SI--who is she ..
KH-- gav stuff abt her n talked abt controversya bt her book..seeing the look on SI's face said --"but i do not know the name of her book"
(agian smiles all around--man i am fed up of this)
SI--so u hav writren in ur form abt heat stroke(i had given some stuff abt how in nagpur i usually get heat strokes once every year--this in response to some problem vala ques..)
can u expalin me abt it??
KH--gav some gyan abt wat happens to mmoi when i hav it..
SI--no abt general public the theory behind it..
KH--gav some crap abt heat flow n all in the end said i did not know-- i just hav loads of headaches...
(look at each other n decide the poor chap has had enuff...)
ONG--so u may leave now--(points to the toffee bowl--now i hav a ques while i was waiting 4 my turn everyone had said that they were giving chocolates so i was waiting 4 some dairy milk or atleast a perk
but these were plain old eclairs--sheesh)--take some
(MOI TAKE ONE)
ong-come on take one more...
KH--(can not say i hate eclairs --so take 2/3 more n leave after doing the usual BS)
it was 21 min 38 sec interview and i liked it--the panel wsa nice n helped me along--i kept my mug beaming with smiles at times and never stressed out --apun load nayich leta ..

to bhai log kuch comments vagarah de do...even if it looks all downhill do not hesitate i hav layers n layers of fat(frm eating loads of chocs) and i can easily withstand the barbs..
shucks forgot to add my profile earlier
10th--88.4 cbse
12th--90.8 cbse (PCM)
GRAD (BE Electronics)--till now 80 %--uni topper
CAT--99.77--A B K only due to 89 in DI..
also wud like to mention one thing---my pa saw some IIFT seniors rushing to their classes with sukhaa(dry) bread pieces in their mouths and not even a dolloop of jam or sauce in it and sheesh talking of breakfast ---bread..yuk i hate bread... peeps n is this the scenario in B-schoos that u do not get time to eat ???
properly even..mujhe dar lag raha hai---i luv my food.... n it seems if i get threu any B-school i am going to disapperar in thin air--my pa was having a good laugh over it all the way back ..

ciao all
Puneet
PS--yaar i was searching like mad 4 PGites on my floor(first floor) but did nah find any one--kahan the bhiru log--may be 2nd ..mine was full of chandigarh folks..

My remarks - 27-02-2005, 06:19 PM

First of all, I can hardly comment about the technical Qs! as I'm only a commerce grad But that was a good post to read.

Love how you defended Enid Blyton from the food perspective; seriously I only recall her great descriptions of things in the larder from her books now.

Boy, my own form must've been boring as hell.. PG ites are having a gala time mentioning whistling, Enid Blyton and what not.....

About the sweet ceremony at the end, well, at least they offered you some! Unlike with moi  I just made my peace thinking I didn't like plain eclairs anyway! Maybe a case of sour grapes?

Anyway, all the best to you and thanks for sharing your experience!

[

}

Can't comment on the area of the chip, but there are something like 40 million transistors on the P4 chip, again no idea as to how they vary between different speeds.

And you could have spoken of the Moore's law I guess, though that is perhaps situational. Nevertheless, Best of LLuck!
