had my IIM A intrvw today.2nd session 2:00 clock
my backgrnd- computer engg from pantnagar.GB pant university of agriculture & technology.

7 ppl for case study.general case of a college cultural secy mahesh cot cheatin during exams.administration adamant on puninshing him by withdrawin scholarship n chucking him out for one year.his backgrnd poor.ramesh his fren and college prez tries to mediate but admin. relentless.mahesh repents is ready to do anything.students want strike which ramesh doesn`t want to call.how does ramesh handle this.how does he help his fren mahesh.he has already talked to authorities. easy pace of case. 5 min to study 20 to discuss and 5 more to write summary.be careful they take back summary sheets within 2-3 min and not 5 min as promised.

R: agricultural uni. and computer engg.how does this relate.
me: try to tell them uni has six coll ours is engg coll.
M: asks me if my comp engg relates to agri.
me: try n tell them its pure comp engg but if they want i can relate comp engg with agriculture.
M: asks again the same question.
asks if my deppt has sth to do with agri.(ohhhh gawd is he sick or what)
Me: i say no. (he looks satisfied and leaves it that)
M:what r your interests ?
me:sir i m heavily into extracurricular....
M:(interrupts) no no in curriculars
Me:(f*** U)sir networking and operating systems.(shiit what didi i say)
M: (laughs) says ya networkin.thats why u r interested in management.
me: i can`t see a relation but still smile back.(idiot)
M: asks me abt linux,unix windows, NTFS,FAT n diff among them n god knows
what else.
Me: reply to most questions though not convincingly.he keeps interrupting me after evry sentence seeking clarification on my answer.
M:what is open sourcing.
Me:tell him
M: did u try open sourcing ur linux ?
me: (r u nuts) no sir
M: asks me to draw OSI N TCP/ip layers
Me: draw them.
M: what does session layer do.
Me: tell him.
M: howz that diff from data link layer.
ME: unconvincing reply
M:asks again
ME:again same reply.
M(not convinced)
tosses me over to L>
L:how many types of power r there?
ME:sir pardon power?
L:ways of deriving power.

ME:coal,sun wind,nuclear bla bla bla
L:hav u heard of renewable:
ME yes sir
L:what r they?
ME:tell him
all the while M kept interruting me to know something or the other.
M:hav u heard of this bus stop comin up in delhi? u r frm delhi na?
ME : no sir frm dehra dun
M:anyways u read newspapers? yes sir so tell me why r ppl opposing it.he describes a bus stop with glass rooms and aluminium top n all.
ME: (i m confused) sir bus or bus stop.
M: bus stop.
L: intervenes he hasn`t read it.leave it.
M:u hav written u r into music?aht kinda music
ME:tell him.all band names n all.
M:u listen ghazals too.
ME:air jagjit singh and ghulam ali sometimes.
M:name any two other ghazal singers.
ME:(what teh hell) think for sometime.sorry sir cannot recall.

Guess they still like pissing off ppl :smile, One of my frnds frm ISM was screwed royally as to why did they waste resources on teaching comp sci. in an institute dedicated to mines and petroleum engineering :P

Many of us felt Quixotic for the whole time :smile:, rght till they offer u a chocolate (did they, this time arnd ??) and then say..."U want two", and then explain whatever u say, yes / no !

so peace of advice, they dnt giv u more thn 3 minutes, so be really really fast here......

i thought they are true to their word atleast in the sense they give as much time as they promise... as it is 5 min is too less... also all other groups seem to hav got 5 min.

given that CA's have nothing remotely connected with such bonds (other than mabbe a passing reference in the FM paper, u hav managed this very well, i personally would hav said i dunno

yup there is a formula, cannot remember it though, but it is used in some interest calculations

overall
looks like a good GD but a few observations

1) although you have 1+ yr of experience they havent asked you much about it
2) the acads that they grilled you on were non conventional for a CA
3) they did not as much ask u a single question other than acads/tech/workex, i mean nothing on hobbies, other activities etc (except for the cameo at the door)

looks like they did not give u any chance to lead them into any questions (other than one instance of banking - debit credit - visa). but i feel you hav handled it well by making ur position clear right at the offset every time (eco only in B com, only simple commerce related maths... etc).

i feel its a gud performance....keep ur fingers crossed

finally they got a guy who could perform n prove in fromt of them, i think they were expecting you to blow it away ... u did n u didnt

The IIFT campus looked deserted as I slowly strolled into the warpath.
There were a few very serious looking men...dressed in formals..impatiently
and nervously looking around.

I tried and avoided any eye contact and walked to a certain corner giving them all
an acknowledging smile.However,it seemed their faces were twitching in certain similarity-so much that I think it was one of my Kodak moments.

Anyways-a very fat strict looking man(south Indian)called out some names..and took the lot to the first floor of the cold and dull looking campus.


Immediately after I lodged my luggage-me and my certificates-at the desired position,we were called in for a GD session.I could hear the heartbeat of the guy sitting next to me in the group.When he told me that he had 10 years of workex,I could definitely hear my heartbeating at 144 per minute.

Anyways-the case was again about the Mahesh and Rajesh chapter.
Its a personal observation-IIMA guys like case studies bsed on ethics and profitbaility based situations.

The group had 5 members-all guys except me.
Believing that chivalry might give me an edge over the men who looked all ready to tear each other apart.

I didnt open my mouth till the first five minutes as it was utter nonsense what was going on.Everyone seemed to be discussing the case facts-and-not the solution.I tried to raise my point about each member making a valid suggestion rather than screaming simultaneously on different octaves.

However-I was pained and felt like ghost as not even a glimpse was given or a slight break in the rapid cacophony to acknowledge my presence there.
I couldnt imagine myself losing a ground to those errants..
Somehow-Icleared my throat and made two valid suggestions which was very appreciated by all the group members.Each one started doing rapid head banging and pointed my suggestion ad nauseam....I made three entries and kept quiet as it was a give up situation in my group.

I very slyly wrote all my suggestions neatly in around 2-3 mins(when the teachers snatched the papers away-very stern humans)

Anyways-the PI was pretty confusing as none of the panel members gave an approving comment or a disapproving comment.However,I was able to give back confidently.

M:So..you are assistant manager in finance..eh?(with a seemingly cunning smile)
I:Nodded
M:Whats finance?
I:Answered
M:Ohh...whats accounting?
I:Answered
M:I have loads of money....I dont want to invest...do I need finance guy
I:Ofcourse-policymaking for future expenditures and cash mgt...

M:(Smiles slyly)u must have done costing then...
I:Yes sir...in graduation...for four months
M:Whats cash breakeven point?
I:Sir...I will not be able to give exact formula for its depiction but I believe its
blah blah ....
M:Oge..whats Profit in your terms ..smiles again(each time he does this,a shiver runs down my spine..ofcourse invisible to any human eye)
I:Blah blah...(I tried to be as cool and smiling as the M)
R:So...whats the most imp thing you work at?
I;Blah blah...
R:Ok..tell me...one way you can improve this analysis...
I:Sir...is this a hypothetical case or what?
R:I think you havent got my question
I;Yes,please repeat
R:Ok..he repeats the same line...and smiles(like the M)
I:Ok..I made two suggestions
R:Ok,but why so?
I:Give the reasoning behind my suggestion
R:I'll give you a problem on interest calculation and accruals.Draw a graph showing the relativity of amount acrruing for a period of five years.
M GIVES A SHEET AND A PEN WITH HIS HORRENDOUS SMILE
I:Sir,whats principal,int rate,compounding or simple...ask some details.
Meanwhile...I do some quick calculations and draw the graph...
All L,M and R stare into the sheet...M says..its ok if you just do for 3 years.
I drew for five years and decribe..its increasing at decreasing rate...they nod in unison.
M;Asks me a question on the same cse...with a twist...very confusing..
I:Smiled and reply
M:Are you sure?
I;Yes...there can be only two ways of solving it
M now smiles and looks both sides(Gives the creeps to anyoe facing it)
L:Oh...I am pretty intrigued by your strengths and weaknesses..
I:Nod...and wait
L:Could you repeat them ...
I:Quote it for them
L:Why honesty as a weakness?
I:Sir...because...blah blah..
L:But...we need to be honest as a person.no?
I:Sir...its not a weakness...its my weakness
L:But...
I:Cutting him before he says something demoralising...its a personal opinion so..
L:I shall respect ur opinion then...

All three smile together...very scary sight...in chorus-take a sweet

Before leaving,I ask M....Sir,I would like to confirm the ans for the Intt cse..are there more than 2 options.
M smiles...if had more time,would be discussing with you.its ok...All the best.

I smile and make my way.

It has been a bouncer interview as it was pretty vague with no expression from the panel(all three were very strict looking south indians)

I would say...it was truly weird because they were posing completely different set of questions to my other group members...
Please do guide me whether the PI was a disappointment as I have heard that when the panel of IIM-A says..good luck-it implies...we have not chosen you.

Do respond because its just a tiny-winy bit I heard few days before from IIM passouts.

ur interview went well it seems tho i cant comment on GD (data insufficient )... but then seems like every1 at PG is having a ball at IIMA... so kinda tuff competition ... ATB

actually i was just getting out of the hang over of a bad interview
three panelist
case was about ibrahims problem of releasing a pressnote bout the placements
that went well
interview started with speedometers was'nt able to collect my sense's be4 then he moved to speed measurement in aeroplanes (didnt no an instrumentation engg. was supposed to no all that)some how managed an answer after much thinking
lil on extra curriculars went well
lastly on industrial know how was pathetic had no idea.any waz that was bout it

hey..me too from instrumenation and control..and guess what-
i was asked the speedometer thing too!
i had no clue about it but just explained to them how i would design one by using galvanometer principle and attching a dynamo to it.

they followed it with lots of vague qns about how to transfer all that data from a travelling car to a laptop. one suggestion being take a recording and scan it!

was urs a panel with a young spectacled guy in the middle(looked really intimidating).
