Making right beginning for IIM admission - 22-03-2005, 10:49 AM

Hello friends,

i m attending CAT classes by TIME since last week. now after attending lectures on all sections of cat by 4 faculty members, i m damn sure to say that as far as PUNE TIME is concerned it`s best.

being a regular CAT taker since couple of years I was sceptical about these institutes. but wat i learnt in my quest for cat is that being persistent and toiling hard is not enough. fortunately or unfortunately in this exam at the end wat matters is results not process or hours u put in the preparation.

considering cut-throating competition it`s indispensable for anyone to start early with best approach . I found TIME faculty members more aware about 2 aspects of cat i.e. speed and accuracy. It was reflected in their classes when they spend more time on method of fast calculation or smart thinking rather than on in detail solving of problem.

my sole intention of sharing my experience about cat with u is to help u to select right institute or in other words design right strategy for cracking CAT.

Hi Howard,

Good that you have joined TIME. Well I have joined IMS here in Mumbai. I heard, that TIME has a unique methodology by which they take you ground up as far as speed is concerned. Please share some of the tips with the other group members.

As far as IMS is concerned, their CATAPULT material is very good. They cover various mind bending exercises in the classroom, however, I certainly think that CAT is not about those mind benders, its about chosing the right questions. As they say, you should be at the right place at the right time for success. So please share some of the speed tests and exercises with the group.

By the way, I heard we all Pune pagals are gonna meet. Is it so? Well count me in. I come to Pune only on weekends so please, let me be the part of the action.

Regards,

Hey Govi,

that is really good suggestion .
instead of spending too much time on discussing about institutes let`s get down to an act of knowledge sharing

here is how i ve decided and started to prepare for cat 2005:

1. RC , VERBAL and GD:

i boiled down to THE WEEK and INDIAN EXPRESS as a regular and weekly reading material.
since last 4 years i was reading TIMES OF INDIA and INDIA TODAY but found both less interesting content-wise .
anyway reading editorials and articles regularly helps.
methodology while reading:
1. read at fast speed without loosing comprehension(How to read better and faster by Norman Lewis helped me to improve my speed)
2. after reading whole article i ponder over it like wat it says ? how is flow of passage? does it make sense? if facts are given in passage i just spend few seconds to look back at those.

Conclusion: My comprehension has improved and got new perspective while reading article and most importantly i m able to recollect passage and make summary.

2. DI/QUANT:

i haven`t started doing study of it except attending TIME classes on it.

one suggestion solve DI caselets without using PEN/pencil ...... read any book on vedic maths for rapid calculation. di fundabook by Career Launch is good for Vedic maths basics.

I hope to get similar experience sharing posts from friends in Pune on this forum.

As far as having get-together of PG people in Pune we can have it at any time.

----Howard

Hi guys,
i think 'smart study' is the golded word rather than persistent/meticulous. eventhogh BRMs of ims give you an idea of conventional methods of solving problems, devising your own short cuts counts more.

there are good faculty members at ims who help at this, here at cochin.

Hi Pagals,

Well, I have a study tip for DI. There is this good old saying, that if you wanna excel at exams, try to put yourself in the examiners shoes. So thats the key thing. If you read the Economic times regularly or if you track the stck market regularly, you will get great examples of DI. What I suggest is that we all can come up with one caselet from real life and formulate questions on it and post it here for the others to solve. You see, when you make the questions based on the data, you have a different approach towards it. It is this approach that we need to share accross.

So let us each come up with one caselet each week with 6-7 questions. What say?

Regards,
meticulous_guy

Hey ppl,
Sorry for this post,it might sound weird but I'm in deep shit.
I work with a software company make some decent money but am not happy
with the job.Coding is something that I just cant think of doing for the rest of my life.
I plan to do MBA next year(Didnt give CAT,CET this year).
Now the problem is that my girlfriend(we've been together for 6 years)
is working with a company in delhi, shes earning really well(Shes an MBA).I dont wanna get married to her until I complete MBA( 3 more years) and our parents are totally against us(different religions).
I'm afraid that if I make her wait for 3 more years, her parents might
get her married of,although they havent really spoken to her about it but you know how it is...
I'm in a very confused state of mind.
I dont know if this is the right place to pour my heart out...but I need some serious advice from you janta...PULEEEEEZ tell me what to do...
Regards,
Frank.

I hope u will go for what u wish 2 do.
Still wat i can suggest is that if situation is so bad that she can`t wait for 3 years and u r damn serious about ur love then get married FIRST.

Yaar, zindagi mein you can do MBA at any time but u will not get another chance in case she get married. Dil ke mamle mein don`t take risk......woh karo jo dil kahta hei..sounds like my favourite movie-star ShahRukh is preaching, isn`t it?

Anyway there is no UPPER LIMIT for doing MBA so u can do it after getting married(of course at that time she will sponsor ur study::--))

Guys and fellow pagals,

Why do I feel that this thread is moving away from the motive? Well Frankie with all due respects to you and your love life, I request all the members here to focus on CAT. We can solve each others personal problems on a personal basis. We all have our Personal screennames listed in profiles isn't it? So lets stick to CAT here.

By the way what do you feel about my idea of DI in the past few posts? Please respond and lets get to some serious study.

Regards,

I agree with u dost. still one may take help of any of PG guys by sending private message. anyway forget it.

Hey meticulous_guy,
wat u suggest abt reading Economics Times tables is really innovative and praiseworthy. as far as making table and solving DI tables on forum; it doesn`t seems feasible for me. no bitter feelings please.

yah definitely we can share tricks and methods 2 get fast and accurate answer while solving DI caselets.

here is something i wish 2 suggest:

1. while solving DI caselet first spend few more seconds on data then go 4 Q as it is crucial while answering

2. if any of options in Q is None of these or Data Insufficient then b more conscious about wat is asked.

3. almost 90% of times avoid doing any calculations by Pencil/Pen.....believe me u can get answers by just observation and smart thinking.

4. In DI wat helps most is PRACTICE PRACTICE and PRACTICE
