Finance Job for engineering graduates - 27-01-2005, 04:37 PM

Hi Guys

I would like to know what are the chances of an engineer getting a job in the finance stream. I am working in a software firm for 6 months in mainframes. No coding till now. Only documentation work

I do not want to work in the IT industry. I like Finance and read economic times daily. Till i get a MBA i WOULD like to work in a finance firm so that i can learn something. Salary is not a criteria for me

Guys please suggest if i stand a chance. If yes how should i draft my resume. Are only bcom, ca's taken for finance

Waiting for suggestions

Hi

I think I am the perfect person to answer your query.
You can catch hold of companies into investment banking, MFs,Insurance, stockbroking, etc . See, a better way of approaching is going and meeting people rather than mailing a resume. Thats coz the resume may not be able to reflect everything clearly. With a personal contact, things can definitely work out; if you are good enough and show high enthu levels.
If you can impress them with your knowledge, they will surely take you as management trainees. This is a Fundoo option to increase your knowledge further and get an insight into the corporate world. This is a challenging work.
By the way, I am an engineering graduate and currently a research trainee in an investment banking firm.

Dear Prashu and Rajesh,

See, as I mentioned before, engg graduates can be taken by these ibanks, etc as management trainees. What it calls for is, a fair amount of knowledge about finance and business markets, and a zeal for the same. You must project yourselves as having capabilities of assimiliating finance knowledge and contributing, if given an opportunity. As I said, best way to go for is go to an ibank or MF or Insurance or Stock Analysis related firm and speak to them about your interest in finance. They may quiz you a little. Then, they can absorb you as a trainee. When I say this, of course don't go straight to a DSP Merrill or a Mckinsey, they need strict professional qualification. Go to a middle tier organisation. There are lots of them.
And about the kind of work that you may do is from analysing Balance Sheets of clients/other companies, making reports on sectoral performances, following the markets (stock quotes and NAVs in case of Mutual Funds) to tracking a company's performances, etc. It will be more of a case of self-learning here though.
