One year workex or TWO YR WORKEX....LATERALS???? - 25-01-2005, 08:57 PM

hi junta...

before i begin this post i'd begin with a note to the mods...I knw u r very eager to lock this standalone post...but i request u not to..my reasons are

1.this is an impending and a very germane q in front of most of the freshers who dint get thru CAT '04...

2. I used the search function to find out the relevant thread on this topic but got evrthing frm quant teasers to jmet as the results..

3. i tried posting this in the "relevant" thread but some how dint get appropriate response...it hardly catches the attention of the veterans and it fades away...

so plz plz plz do not lock this post..

my questions to the whole cat community in general and the veterans in particular are-

Does it make sense to have one yr workex and then go for MBA?...or would it be prudent for me to skip this yr and wait so that i'm elligible for lateral placements with a workex of 22 months?... wud software work exp help in getting a job in say a bulge bracket company like BCG or goldman sachs...lastly , Do workex ppl really hold an edge over non workex ppl ??

cheerios

I'm facing the exact dilemma as u r facing...but i've decided after careful thought to give CAT this year only...coz u dnt knw whts gonna happen two years down the line...its a game of cascaded probabilities...

if u r good enuf to get thru a mckinsey or goldman sachs u'll get thru neway...i doubt if extra 1 yr software workex will really make a hell lot of difference to ur chances of getting thru...so i'm not gonna skip this year and wait for another year...

workex ppl hold an edge over non workex ppl ...more so when their exp is in the relevant field or they have already reached the stage of project manager or something...which i doubt will hold true in ur case...

ofcourse ppl may differ on this...i invite contrary opinions...

Dekh from what i have gathered from the B-school junta here is that unless u are an iitian\CA you have hardly any chance of making it to an I- bank and other such cos, esp as a fresher u can pretty much kiss your chances goodbye. But 1 year of workex will not really get u into the "work -ex" waali junta there ...at least 22 months are needed for laterals...so think again mah friend and for gawd sakes start working on the BTP

Nice nick that u have - THEGODTHATFAILED..

Aneeways i will tell u from experience(Work experience) that no work ex will go for waste .. Dont always think in a single track, it's always good to have options .. As u say "It's a game of cascading probabilities" why not insure u'rslef against any disaster ... Besides u are bound to learn a lot in the 1/2/3 years of work ex .. U will meet lots of interesting people and get some varied prespectives... So go ahead full steam and take up the job .. U never know, u may even start liking it ...

Hello all,
Before plunging into my opinion , i would like to introdulce myself. I am an engg 2004 passout.
In my engg 3rd yr only, i have made up my mind to do MBA from IIMs and nothing less than that. Last year i prepared very seriously.... but as my stars are not with me, i could not get through CAT.
But , i got a job in WIPRO in campus placement. Then came the classical dilemma of whether joining in WIPRO or prepare full time for CAT 2004.
Many ppl told me that if u join in a software company, u will lose focus of CAT and u can never make it to IIMs.
But, i followed what my heart said to me to join in WIPRO. As i am almost already prepared well for CAT, although there is initally a lot of work pressure, i could cope up with it and still keep my focus on CAT.
The most important thing i learnt in WIPRO is the corporate culture, business etiquette and to how to behave like a man rather than a boy. So, what i can say is even if they dont count 1 yr work ex, whats the loss? U will definitely learn a lot. That is very crucial.
Regarding laterals, who the heck want them? If u can sneak into any IIM , ur future will take care of itself. Dont worry about it.
By the by, this time around i got 5 IIM calls and i hope to get thru atleast one of them and i dont worry about that work ex funda.
The basic thing is u should write CAT only when ur in touch. U never know what will happen if u wait for 2 yrs and u may lose focus as well.
So, my suggestion for all well prepared freshers who did not get thru CAT this yr, if u have any job in hand, join that and write CAT 2005 only and dont wait long.
Thanks for ur patience.
bye,
subrahmanyam.

anand bhai...its very easy for u to say that wait for one year and then give CAT...coz u have tamed it...but for me...it seems so far far away and taking such a long break and getting detached from this CAT world is very very scary...i simply dont have the balls to wait and start all over again...it may sound outright ludicrous to u...but thts the way it looks like from here...

ciao

thanx rajesh, rohit and subrahmanyam for their excellent inputs...widened my horizons further....

couple of more trivial questions i've got for junta are

how much % of ppl do make it to the laterals and how many of the total companies visiting offer lateral placements ?????????
