Dear All

I am MBA Aspirant from Gurgaon. I am working in IndusInd Bank from past 1 1/2 yrs. I have a interest in banking & insurance sector. Can some of the seniors of NIA SoM throw some more light on NIA SoM MBA Course as a whole and also about Placements, fees, foreign study tour, hostel facilites for girls.

I heard about NIA SoM, Pune last year from one of college senior who is working in Prudential, Singapore.

[FONT='Verdana','sans-serif']Pune: Management graduates specialising in insurance are making the most of the rapid growth being witnessed by the insurance sector in the country. This is reflected in the rising graph of their annual pay packages offered at campus placement in specialist institutions like the National Insurance Academy (NIA), Pune.
This year, the highest pay pack bagged by an NIA school of management (NIASOM) student touched Rs 8.5 lakh per annum — up from the Rs 7 lakh per annum highest mark during last year’s recruitment exercise.
The average salary package, too, has gone up significantly from Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 6.3 lakh per annum, over the last two years. Last year, the same
was Rs 5.5 lakh. At the lower end, the minimum package was Rs 4.75 lakh, which again is up from Rs 3 lakh per annum last year.
Fourteen companies, including multinational insurance brokers, reached NIA’s campus at Balewadi on December 4, for this year’s recruitment from the class of 2008, comprising 58 students.
“Each student was eyed by more than one company as we had a total of 96 offers. The entire batch got picked up on day zero itself,” NIA director K.C. Mishra told TOI on Monday.
While a majority of these students got picked up by proper insurance firms, 15 were recruited by insurance brokers and two by infotech (IT) companies with insurance as one of their business verticals.
“This marks a shift from last year’s recruitment when IT firms had an upper hand,” NIA placement in-charge Smita Totade said. “A recruitment slowdown due to factors like the rupee-dollar equation, may be the cause behind lesser IT firms reaching us this year,” she added.
The NIA, established in 1980 jointly by the Union government and public sector companies — Life Insurance Corporation and the General Insurance Corporation — has grown from training senior insurance industry executives to a premier establishment, catering to the insurance education needs of India and 64 other countries from Asia and Africa.
It made a foray into management education by starting a two-year MBA (Insurance) programme in 2004, to meet the growing requirement of qualified skillset. The programme offers a dual specialisation, i.e. one in life or non-life (general) insurance and other in either of four functional areas — finance, marketing, IT and human resources.
Post-opening up of the Indian insurance sector in 2000, the number of public and private sector insurance firms has gone up to over 25 from five that initially operated in the life and non-life segments.
“Demand for skillset is bound to go up heavily over the next five years, considering the new entrants as well as continuing mergers and tie ups,” said Totade. So far, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has issued over 260 broker licences, which includes 10 multi-national companies (MNCs), she said.
The demand is particularly high in core operation areas such as insurance underwriting, which involves complex tasks like market risk assessment and pricing; insurance product development wherein people with actuarial science know-how play a vital role; and overall risk management, she said.
Delhi-based health insurance firm Milliman India recruited three of the NIASOM students specialising in actuarial know-how, she added.
With 12 accepted offers, Reliance General Insurance accounted for the highest recruits at NIASOM this year, followed by nine each recruited by the ICICI Prudential Life Insurance and Reliance Life Insurance.
“Students usually tend to go for core insurance firms although, other foreseen factors like monetary packages and exposure in global market, drives some to consider IT firms and multinational brokers for a career,” Totade said. [/font]
