Insurance MBAs make hay in talent scramble

Arti Sharma | TNN

Mumbai: The insurance sector seems to be the hottest place to find jobs. Or so it would seem. Given the acute shortage of talented people in the industry, for the second year in a row, the MBA students specialising in insurance at the Pune-based National Insurance Academy have been inundated with job offers.
Out of the batch of 60 students this year, 58 asked to be placed and have received 81 day zero offers. So far Reliance General Insurance, owned by the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, has made the maximum number of offers to 12 students.
This in a scenario where it’s not just insurance companies looking for insurance talent but also IT companies that are gunning to hire for their insurance vertical business. Although India has a total of 30 odd companies in the life and general insurance sector, it still faces tremendous shortage of skilled workers. Compare this to the fact that countries like Malaysia have over 70 insurance companies. India too, is witnessing a host of new players waiting in the wings to start operations.
Meanwhile, with just 58 students specialising in insurance MBA’s NIA has the upper hand. Wipro, the IT major, has picked up 9 graduates for it’s insurance vertical while Cognizant has made an offer to 6 students. Other players like ICICI Prudential have picked up 8, broking firm Marsh & Mclennan 6. Insurance companies, both life and non-life, while growing at a rapid pace are unable to meet the demand for skilled talent. Companies are not only looking for agents but also management level people to run the business. Training and skills are becoming are key concern for companies as they grapple with this issue.

Last year too, NIA students—a batch of 30—had multiple offers from companies weeks before placement week. In fact, Reliance General had picked up 11 students last year as well. “We’ve been swamped with offers so much so we are allowing students two days time to make up their mind and confirm their placements to the institute and the companies,’’ says Dr K C Mishra, director, NIA.

This year has also seen an increase in the average salaries offered to students. Compared to last year’s average of Rs 3.5 lakh annually, students have received offers above Rs 5.5 lakh this year. Although the institute is yet to compile the data, it is believed that some firms have offered stock options to the tune of Rs 4 lakh in addition to the fixed salary. Also, some students have received offers between Rs 10-14 lakh per annum.

hey mr. shashwat singh plz don`t misguide cat aspirant . wht is ur logic behind inflated expected cut-off of nia . previous year cut-off was 60percentile so it can hardly be 65 or 70. just remeber previous year u had said the same thing . guys dont trust on these lier they r making hoopla. just go 2 previous thread . i m not telling u that nia is bad it is a good instituion but the student qualities here is worsed. and even i m shocked when i heard the inflated placement figure.

Hey Mr. Guddu
If i m not wrong then u r the same guy who gav all the wrong facts of insurance sector itself in one of ur previous post??i hope u remember. I dont know why u start giving ur expert comments in a topic where u dont hav much knowledge. Like u said PREVIOUSLY that insurance company r into losses and many other things so let me clear one thing to all the people again that Insurance is the second fastest growing sector in India and allmost all the major banks and other companies r lined up to open an insurance company in India.

So u r previous post is make no sense, and about the inflated placement figures then i think people will hav more trust in TIMES OF INDIA then u or me. The news has appeared in Times of India, Mumbai on 11th of november go and check it and then come back to us.(remember that is not an advertisment that is a news item)

About the perecntile i m just giving my suggestion to people ???its upto me to suggest them.
so please enjoy u r life in which ever college u r and dont be jealous about us.

Any student can come to NIA and check about the schools credibility and more importantly intract with students of NIA

one more thing i do not want to get into any war of words its just that correct thing should reach to people

NIA SoM has Arrived - 29-11-2006, 11:31 AM

Dear Guddu,
Let me clarify that I don’t want to make it a one to one affair with you. I don’t doubt your knowledge about insurance as well. But let me clarify that because of the nature of insurance business It takes ideally 7 years for a life insurance company to break even and the same gestation period for a general insurance company is 4 years. SBI life was the first company to break even last year and a lot of other companies will in a period of a couple of years. By GAAP standards three companies including max new york life and sbi life have registered profit.

Please brush up your concept on what is known as New business strain a concept exclusive to the insurance industry. This simply highlights the fact that you have to make provisions for future with very heavy initial expenses as your contingent liabilities fall in future through out the currency of the policy. Which means more the policy underwritten the larger is the gestation period and you have to make adequate provisions for future. This is by no standard a loss concept . I believe your knowledge is hollow and you need some more insight into the subject. I want to tell you that companies like Wipro Cognizant and swiss Re have picked our batch mates because they think that our standard is good enough for them. Let me clarify to you that Swiss re only visits NIA in our country.

Of 58 opting for placements IT major like WIpro cognizant and Tcs have picked in bulk. In three years of its history NIA SoM has made a indelible imprint in the industry. I want to inform you that the placements have been excellent and companies like ICICI prudential have picked up candidates as Management trainees on a sum of 6 lacs putting us in the league of best B schools in the country.

We had a 50 students out of 58 opting to be placed through campus in 6 hours on day zero. This is a feat in itself and a remarkable achievement.
Unlike most B school I am not exaggerating one bit when I say Our average placements are nearly 5 lakhs or over. I will come out with the exact figure in some time when the entire analysis is done.

I wish you good luck for your future and hope next time you will not try to misguide any body with your hollow and half baked knowledge on a subject that you have only understood partially.

Re: NATIONAL INSURANCE ACADEMY, Pune Callgetters - 16-12-2006, 07:24 PM

anu,
i had secured admission there last year(91%ile cat), however didnot join.

1. yes it is a residential programme
2. the fee for the 2006-2008 batch is 5L which includes a foreign trip, for them its manchester i guess.
3. excellent infra
4. join it only if u are interested in insurance.

if u actually manage to get 105 in cat then u will definitely have better options.
last yr ppl with 70 %ile were also admitted, strength of the batch is 60 therefore placements is not a problem.

Our director is a renouned figure in the industry. the faculty is very good as well. As Ladoo rightly put it if you have interest in Insurance apply withiut a thought.
