What is Lateral Placement - 05-01-2005, 04:32 PM

Hi,
I would like some info on what exactly lateral placement is?

How many years work ex is required to be eligible for lateral placement.

I have joined my job in July 2004.
I intend to appear for CAT 2005.
By the time I enter a mgmt institute(if things go right for me), then I will have 1 year and 11 months of work experience.

With such a profile, will I be eligible for lateral placement if I get into the IIMS.
And also, will I be counted as a guy with 2 years work experience???

It entirely depends on the insti u apply and the companies which come there. AFAIK...colleges like SPJ donot have laterals whereas all iim's have....general info that is known to all is that 22 months is the benchmark....if u have that much work ex than u will considered for laterals.

Thats great.
But are you absolutely sure about the 22 months.
And is it an accepted number or is it what you have gathered from your observations.

Pretty much frm my experience. I am dead sure that number is not less than 22, Accenture and some I know asks for a much higher number....i have heard this don't know how much true is this....but iim's, nitie, mdi i think and most of the top rungs ask for atleast 22 months work ex for laterals....remember ultimately its the companies which decide in many cases whether people are qualitfied for laterals or not. My advice would be forget abt laterals and prepare for ur exams.....this is too early to think abt these issues and make sure u don't go for mba just keeping these things in mind.

Your opinion on not keeping these issues in my mind is of course correct.
But don't you think knowing the facts will help me in timing my MBA.
In June 2006, I will be having 23 months of workex.
So knowing that I will indeed be eligible for laterals is very encouraging.

By the way, I have totally missed the boat in 2k4 as I have not got any calls due to my bad DI.
Net = 98.2
DI = 79.

How much does Mckinsey look for - 05-01-2005, 06:11 PM

How much workex do top consulting companies look for.

And also how much do I-Banks look for?

Or are all of these people selecting students purely based on their merit??

Also, is it true that only people who go in with great workex get salaries like 20-30 lakh p.a.

Or is the average fresher who gets into these instts also eligible for such job offers(paying 20-30 lakh pa), provided he is competent and the company thinks he/she is worth the salary.

I personally donot think that the criteria for going for mba or not shud depend on whether u want to get job thru laterals. Looking at ur percentile i wud suggest don't think abt laterals just concentrate on ur preparation. The earlier the better. remember u r not getting any younger and i tell u its not very easy to prepare and also work. And the more exp u get the more work u will get and finding time will become that much difficult. Rest its upto u....

I thought SPJ does have lateral placement and the benchmark was 30 months.....i remember seeing something like that in their placement brochure on their website....did they change policies??

Was just going through this thread and then happened to come across IIM K's site, which says that lateral placement is for those who have above 30 months of experience.http://www.indiaeducation.info/iim/k...placements.htm
Is it the same with other IIMs also, or does the 22 month figure applicable there.
