hi all...
the discussion is not going to end TECH v/s MBA... all have their own views....
I am a tehie... but trying my best to do an MBA.. from a reputed institute.. in the company i have seen many of my seniors toiling hard from years.. they have all needed experience, domain knowledge... blah blah... what it needs to be there.... the top directors, the presidents ... they learned all this thru trial & error methods....
what MBA offers us is a structured way of gaining the same knowledge which u will get somewhere down the line in your job... (reputed B-Schools to be understood)...
and to add much more like the financial games which we cannot lear thru years of exp.. in any industry (i am in s/w bt hope its like that in all indus...) again this are my personal views....
and what Ashish said in the previous post is absolutely correct ... as far as an MBA is consider.... there are much more things to be learned other than being a graduate... which comes hand in hand with exp.... but and MBA exp... can add colors to it.....
hope i have made my points clear...
views not to hurt any one....
all the best to all
cheers !!!!!

i gather frm ur post tht u wrk in trilogy. an apparent flaw in ur argument is tht u r comparing the "avg" salary in the iim's(which is arnd 7-8 lacs btw) with an absolutely top of the line package offered to a techie.
neways, i only wanna add that some ppl r really sure abt wat they wanna end up doing in their life, i.e. whether wanna become a manager, or a techie in a gr8 company, or the greatest garbage collector thr ever was. It is gr8 to be so clear abt ur goals and aspirations. as for others, life is still pretty confusing. And in such a situation I feel that an mba frm a top bschool is the safest way to know, and final acheive, wat u wanna do in ur life. u get to study and wrk alongside the finest brains in the country and find urself at the beginning of a very steep learning curve. the same can be said abt a gr8 company like trilogy. but u must understand that company's like these take only the finest of techies frm the finest of insti's(they took just one frm my coll while more than half a dozen of my fellow techie's r going to iim's). so, for the rest of us, it is still the rat race to bell the cat.

Continue as Techie of go 4 MBA -
06-10-2005, 12:49 PM
Hi,
I m a software engg. BTech from a govt univ. Working in a software firm as a team lead. Having 4+ yrs exp. I attempted CAT 2 times, with around 90 percentile. This time too I have filled my CAT form, but I am not sure if this would help me. What is the right amount of exp to do MBA. I am really doubtfull about that. I think if I go on working, I will anyways be somewhere after 2-3 yrs. And salasry might be comparable as well. Can someone put some light on this.
Best of Luck for CAT 05.
Peter

Hi
me 2 in same catagory having around 4+ yrs of work ex . I think POST MBA placements for people with more exp is little bit difficult if they are switching careers like s/w to marketing, finance etc
But u if u can convince the panel in Interview ( provided u get above 99.5 percentile in cat )that u want to stick to s/w but will go for better responsiblity( Business Development, etc ) after MBA , then i think u have a better chance
Iw'd like expert PAGAL's to comment on this(URMAD hanoz, snan etc)

hi
as far as work ex goes there is no problem. In all IIM's this year propotion of work ex janta has increased a lot. in fact in calcutta it is 27 month on average with many people with work ex of 3-4 years and some even with seven. Indore and kozikode are already known for high work ex. so men getting in no problem. this is true u first salary will be equal to what u are getting know ( around 35-40k in hand) but think of the future. growth opportunities. and one more that tag of mba.

Re: Intresting TRUE mail about MBA Vs TECH ( Must read 4 PG's) -
07-10-2005, 10:50 PM
Hey ppl, I have a singular problem...
I am in IIITM-Gwalior, in a 5-yr dual degree program, that offers an option of MBA or M.Tech after the 3 yr B.Tech... I am in 3rd yr right now and having sleepless nights on whether to choose MBA or M.Tech ( considering that I also wanna go to IIM for MBA)
I am not very enthusiatic about doing 2 MBA's back to back) and if I do M.Tech I run the risk of getting stuck in a techie profile for life....
In my college M.Tech/MBA placements are almost identical....... so placement-wise, u can easily toss a coin to decide what to choose...
any answers ???

This is my story -
08-10-2005, 12:34 AM
First of all i must congratulate for opening this thread which deals with a real issue of this mushrooming of the craze for MBA(although some ppl have interpreted it wrongly and using it as a councelling place). In fact, i myself wanted to start a thread. Ok first things first......
What is 'passion for something we do'.....well let me tell my story....I always was fascinated for computers and the role that an algorithm plays in a system. So I was keen to learn something about computers, at the same time before joining this field, i wanted to love this field of computers and programming ( and this passion for me for invaluable). At the same time, I was very much inclined to other fields of the society (for instance, dealing with ppl, trying to understand them, fields related to economics, finance and other aspects related to mgmt- I simply used to love them). So first i became a computer engineer and passed with gud marks and got a job in a MNC . But let me be honest, although i love my field, my commitment to excel in that was taking a beating (for instance, i cudnt exert pressure wen it was reqd). I could feel that although i was passionate but actually i was not LOVING it. I was enjoying different algorithms not as a profession but something of a hobby and craze. So i decided not to accept the job offer i got in MNC thru my campus. Since i was feeling that i was more inclined to management affairs, I decided to join a small firm (which happened to be a s/w company), here i used to enjoy life. Here i was responsible for everything rite from marketing my company product, to accounting to even coding and also doing the jobs of a receptionist. I was enjoying my diversified roles. In fact somedays i used to work 16-17 hrs(and this too was a paltry sum), but somehow i used to enjoy....even though the returns were negligible. And this enjoyment was not there with me wen i used to sit and do my coding for even 3+ hours......
Probably many ppl having technical inclination would enjoy doing work of coding for 16-17 hrs (but i wasnt that kind of techi), and this belief made me sure that i have it in me to excel in management and strengtened my belief for doing MBA.........
I just wanna sum my story as follows.......respect wat u do. Your job is not just 2-3 break between ur graduation and post graduation, it is an opportunity to extract ur PASSION..
Struggles r everywhere, but v all shd make sure that v enjoy that very STRUGGLE..No complains shd come wen u enjoy this STRUGGLE and SACRIFICE
