Saw a person's percentage scores on the relevant thread - which translated into a net score of 16.00 (assuming TIME score calculations 2 b rite)... and s/he had a overall percentile of 56.xx!
This comes as a shocker... as it means, not even half the CAT-taking junta managed to cross a net score of 16 | And a score of 29.67(as per TIME) maps to an overall %ile of around 85 which means out of the 1.6 lac CAT taking Junta only around 24K have managed to cross 30 marks. |
I wonder why you wonder. Remember there are several factors associated with the exam.
1) The most important I would think - is negative marking
2) Not all the people who give the CAT really have any intention of getting in.
3) There are instructions on the CAT question paper - telling the candidates that they have to show their worth in each section of the exam. Now, a lot of guys will take that seriously enough and start solving the Quant and DI (since we are talking of overall score - that's why I am mentioning this). Now, not everybody has had the forethought of checking for strategies, or giving mock tests. If people don't go in with a strategy, chances are - they will simply go from question 1 in the section .. all the way to the end of the section. They will assume that's the way to solve the paper - and waste useful time trying to solve complicated problems. Putting this bit into perspective, you will realize that it is not surprising that people get such low scores.
4) Factor in the surprise packed into the CAT this year, and you will find even more people getting low scores.
5) Even an analysis of your mock CAT scores will show the kind of scores attained by even serious aspirants - with low percentiles. If you do an analysis of such students - you will realize what is lacking - and there won't be much discussion on the matter.
I have other points to make in this regard. My point is, in 1.5 Lakh people, you can't expect more than some odd figure to score big. That is why, in discussions prior to the CAT, it was mentioned several times that the race, though it appears to be amongst close to 150000 people, isn't really so - it may really be only a small fraction of these 150000.
PS: I think a score of 29 is pretty close to a score of 40 which would be a 95%ile. I dont think 29 is so bad a score when put into perspective.
PPS: I have 94.15 %ile with a score of 38.33 - 94.16 percent people didn't manage to score 39.
PPPS: I wrote this because the previous replies sounded sarcastic. (it may indeed be that you were shocked - but let us not make a mockery of peoples scores).
Thanks.
