How to improve English Score ?

Hi friends,

Can some one please tell me how to improve my english score. I did very bad in verbal and RC section in CAT 2004. I prepared three months but could get improve my english score in mock CATs and that continued in main CAT too. My over all percentile is 98.10 but in english its very low 78 percentile. Not expecting any calls .
Can some one who cracked this year, advice me how to improve my score.

I would suggest one course. Read...write, and some more of the same. Your percantile score of 98 is (I never got that high), and the good news is that you can raise your percantile in English quite easily.
My personal suggestion is to read articles alone, and try to get the meanings from the sentance structure. Do not use a dictionary for this. At first, you will make mistakes...but soon enough you will be able to get at least 90% meanings right.
Grammer is another big issue. I usually try to say the sentance, and see if it sounds right, but I have been told that this is not the best way for everyone.

No not being sarchastic but honestly its shows that you did search for threads unlike many.

But unforunately your kind and in fact good advice is posted on a thread which the person started in Dec 2004, a good 2 yrs back and he has ever since been on hibernation. .

hi dude that was my state last year too....but i managed to raise my english level till CAT to get a 99+ %ile in CAT...anyways what you need to do is find where you excel...RC or jumbled paras or summarising or grammer...set yourself a strategy based on this...that u will attempt u r strengths first experiment a little and u will reach a state where u can give an attempt of 35-40 marks in english and that should get u past the cut offs in most tests...unless u r blindly guesssing answers...cheers and BOL

I too strongly believe that no of attempts in VA section matter a lot alongwith accuracy because cutoffs in this section are very high ..

So , i feel attempt of 40+ marks with accuracy of around 70% will lead to a gud score in this section ..

Aactually i am trying hard for VA..but i feel no improvement till now..

can u suggest me some books.....

is it possible for me to get a score 99%tile starting from 0 in these 5 month time

the most important thing to improve your verbal score is to do extensive reading and specially read those articles which you find are least interesting to you. The reading habit will also aid you in developing your speed which is imperative for a good score in English. And these days especially in CAT more attention is paid towards reasoning skills even in verbal ability so concentrate more on understanding rather than answering...and above all practice and practice...to perfection...
even I had a dismal performance in English over my mock CAT but my reading habit helped me a lot in actual CAT and I managed a decent 99.73%ile in VA

Hi Kranti,

Welcome to PG..VA as far the last two CAT goes, requires more of comprehending ability rather than Your Grammar/Vocab Skills...The best way is to start reading topics which interests you and then after some time start moving to topics which you feel bored about..Concentration is of prime importance for you to comprehend better..
