I repeat my question. And is this pencil a HB pencil????
If "HB" is clearly printed on it, use it, else better dont take chance... though most OMR scanners r not sooo particular abt the pencil... but y take the risk...

Dunno if this is worth a mention or not... or whether this thread is suitable or not... but, dont wanna start another thread on such a trivial thing... posting right here

Happened to meet a OMR scanner salesman during a journey... n being a CAT aspirant, was obviously keen on knowing something xtra abt the same... the noteworthy thing tht came out was tht OMR scanners rnt tht particular abt the pencil - tht nothing save HB wud be acceptable... reason is obvious, the darkening style may vary frm person to person... and the main lgoic behind using HB is tht (as Thussu already mentioned) its "just right" in 13 types of pencils - dark enuff, yet not so dark as to leave an impression on the sheet kept above it...

Whew!

Ok enough of BS already on this thread. The thread starter can take a hike, if he doesnt even know that the OMR sheets shd be filled only with HB pencils. And kudos to the rest of you for your valuable contributions!

Hey I like this thread! Allow people to chill and have some fun .. From pencil aerodynamics to the varying shades of darkness - do discuss some senseless stuff and relax. Just one more week and you wouldn't care anymore!

Cheers,

there are 13 types of pencils, ranging from 6H (Hard) to 6B (Soft) and an HB forming the mean (just right); The 6H is used to sketch outlines whereas the 6B is used for shading...

I would rather use a HB with an eraser over the butt so that i dont have to hunt for one when i need it

Rambling...

Oh I really wouldnt advise that...I tried that out once during one of the mocks and ended up rubbing out 3 answers at a time while correcting a single mistake. Those pencil erasers have a habit of becoming oval shaped very fast and thats not something you want unless you are in a mood to play around with your OMR sheet...

Re: Which pencil to use?? - 15-11-2004, 12:03 AM

Well,

If everyone is in a mood to Bs...Here is my bit...

A small Analysis :

Modern pencils are the descendants of ancient writing instruments. In ancient Rome, scribes wrote on papyrus (an early form of paper) with a thin metal rod called a stylus, which left a light but readable mark. Other early styluses were made of lead. Today we still call the core of a pencil the "lead" even though it is made from nontoxic graphite.

Graphite came into widespread use following the discovery of a large graphite deposit in Borrowdale, England in 1564. Graphite left a darker mark than lead, but was so soft and brittle that it required a holder. At first, sticks of graphite were wrapped in string. Later, the graphite was inserted into wooden sticks that had been hollowed-out by hand! The wood-cased pencil was born.

So, Use any Wood Case Pencil and Make sure you carry loads of them.

Last time around IMS had handed out a pouch containing pencils and an eraser during the Simcats! I carried it over to the actual CAT and for many days as a mark of respect , I had a sig on the forum which stated :

" Pencils! The only usable thing IMS gave me"
