Increase your calculation speed - 04-11-2004, 10:17 PM

Hello friends

While working on the fractions I came across a wonderful trick to increase your speed for calculating the fractions from 1/20 to 1/40 .

Its like this

1/21 , 1/22 , 1/23 = 0.0____ in the blank the no. is 89- ( 2 times the number )

1/22 = 0.045 i.e. 89- 2(22)

eg

1/24 , 1/25 = 0.0____ in the blank the no. is 65- ( the no. itself )

1/26 , 1/27 = 0.0____ in the blank the no. is 64 - ( the no. itself )

and for the jackpot ......

1/28 to 1/ 36 =0.0____ in the blank the no. is 63 - ( the no. itself )

eg

1/ 29 = .034 i.e 63-29

and

1/37 ,1/38 , 1/39 =0.0____ in the blank the no. is 64 - ( the no. itself )

eg

1/37 = 0.0( 64-37) = 0.032

if there are any variations ........do let me know .....

till then

HAPPY CATing

ABS

For 1/39 and 1/40, 65-(no.) is a better option.

Hi akhil,
Nice effort put in...but i really dont think this trick will work because all we need to do the calculations efficiently is a good grasp of fractions up to 1/20
anything above that seems to be redundant...

any ways..thats wat i feel chal bye guys

great method! - 27-07-2005, 10:51 AM

wow! thats a super quick way of doing it ! Thanks.
Can someone tell me how to solce fractions like 46\321 etc quickly. And any method to distinguish which of the 2 given fractions r smaller?

hi guys,

for DI sets, it is imperative that we know some quick methods of comparing fractions.

I find it difficult to do with bigger numbers. Could some post gyan on this front??

For comparing 2 fractions here is a simpler method:

Have a ruff idea of the result u get when u multiply the numerator of 1 fraction with the denominator of the other. Then the fraction with the numerator involved in the greater result is greater of the two.

For eg when u have to compare a/b with c/d then

calculate ruffly a*d and c*b

now suppose a*d > c*b, then a/b > c/d

and wollah u have the rsult...................

Observation on square roots - 28-07-2005, 12:01 PM

Hi,
I observed the following trend in square roots. May prove helpful in DI/QA.

sqrt(23) = 4.8 [ 5 + (n - 5) * 0.1 ]
sqrt(24) = 4.9
sqrt(25) = 5.0
sqrt(26) = 5.1
sqrt(27) = 5.2
sqrt(28 ) = 5.3

sqrt(16) = 4.0 [ 4 + (n-16) * 0.12]
sqrt(17) = 4.12
sqrt(18) = 4.24
sqrt(19) = 4.36

Seems easy to look at. I have given the formula just to show the trend.

all this just makes me think....while giving CAT how many such easy formulaes wud click me? hehehehe

actually even in classroom session we r taught never to mug the formulae (umless there is really no way out). its just abt understanding d logic.
Aur yeh jo squares/sq roots etc stuff hain...iske formulae to kabhi click nahi hote bhai.....isliye i follow d simple funda of mugging 1 to 50. ratto aur har test mei use karo. Neways all those who can rem so many rules for diff number, good luck.
accha haan, somebody was asking about comparing two fractions.
What i normally do is:
e.g. 3/4 and 4/5.
now compare numerator. 4-3=1 , now percentage change on 3 is 33.33%.
similarly for denominator, 5-4=1, here percentage change on 4 is 25%. As percentage change in numerator is more than denominator. So, second number becomes greater after adding some number to numerator and denominator of first numbet i.e. 3/4 < 4/5
What some one earlier mentioned of multiplying N & D of opp numbers...I think the probs is for big numbers like comparing 361/295 and 444/377. Abhi isme multiplication wud take long.
but then if u r good in that, plz follow d same.

I agree with you. The formula may not strike at the time or pressure. But, as in the last line of my post, I gave the formula just to show that there exists a trend. Its pretty easy to remember once the series has been visualized (because u will anyways remember that sqrt(25) = 5.0. Same for sqrt(16) = 4.0 and thereafter)
