infosys people..must see..... - 28-10-2004, 12:32 PM

hello seniors,
* * * * * * * * * * i m in final year of my engineering and m placed in infosys. till now, i was preparing for CAT and was aiming CAT elites likeMDI, NITIE, TAPMI, IMI, IMT etc institutes. also, i was applying in SCMHRD, SIBM, IIFT, NMIMS etc. but, now when i have found my dream company, i m in dilemna. what shud i do? i think that i shud join infy and after 2 or three years, i will prepare for CAT if i feel the need then. some questions i want to ask u all are:

1. which r the institutes for which i shud leave infosys right now?

2. what are the growth chances in infosys in monetary terms? i mean after how * * *many years, i will cross 50000-70000 rupees per month mark?

3. will i get enough time to prepare for CAT along with my job? my caoching teacher says that we won't get much time to prepare with job. what r the schedule of work?

4. i m a mechanical engineer. which languages *i shud know before starting my training?

5. is it really so important to have an MBA degree that every other person is preparing for CAT and is ready to leave company like infosys?

[schild=14 fontcolor=8B0000 shadowcolor=C0C0C0 shieldshadow=1]HERE COMES MY MAN!!![/schild]

hi buddy! lemme introduce myself. im in the final year too( and dying to get the hell outta here...). like you i have got campus offers too . i have 3 job offers right now thanks to the liberal placement policy here at manipal. i have TCS, Infosys and Quark INDIA right now.

taking your questions one at atime....
1. well i suggest you give your best for the CAT and if u do manage the top 10, go
for it. Dont make too much out of this campus placement at Infy. its great i know
certainly not the best thing that could have happened.
2.hey hey hey, 50000 at infy u need pretty long time for that, i would say 6-7 years
at least ( in hand salary im talkin about). right now they offerin me 15000 p.m. so
growth cant be greater than 30% every year under normal circumstances. if u change after 2-3 years then its different.

3. infosys will make an ass out of you buddy. they make you work like dogs in the initial years. i dont kno ur stamina ....

4.didnt u read the offer letter? go to the last page and ull find a host of books on Operating systems, C PRogramming etc they ask us to read before joinin. better still if ur college has a campus connect with infy you can access their website www.campusconnect.infosys.com and do projects beforehand.

5. buddy, nothing like an MBA. look MBA is not just money. its so much more than what u can do at an infy or TCS.

when you are in it till your nose, keep your mouth shut!

Hi there,
Well for starters, my name is Anubhav.I have just passed out of engineering(Comp. Science) and got a placement.
I too had an Infosys offer at hand but i rejected it for various reasons whioch are similar to your questions here.

See if u r planning to get into Infosys let me tell u that its a mad world out there. U r gonna be there among 27000 others and trying to prove your mettle like everyone else..

Moreover the kind of work you will be doing there matters a lot and believe me, i have many friends out there who went for the brand and got lost in the crowd. 3 months out tehre and they know this is not what they had bargained for. 18 hours a day for 3-4 months at a stretch is the norm which applies to all. I m not trying to scare u to bits but thats a fact..

Another thing about ur salary, well as has already been rightly pointed out, u do need 6-7 years before u can command that amount,. Also, look at it this way, at the end of it all, there are some organizations who do not promote people above a certain level if u do not have an MBA degree from the TOP 10 COLLEGES OF INDIA..(Hindustan Lever is one of them..!!)

So, its upto you whether u want the Infy tag or the MBA that u always want to cherish..!! But yes, definitely Quark is a very good company. But before u decide which company to join just have a look at the work that they have done ..!!

But at the end of the day.. its what u do that matters most.. not what someone else is doing..!! Just don't follow the gang.. decide for yourself.

Any furhter information if required, kindly let me know..!!

For the record me in infy since 1.5 years and I can tell u certain things......

1) Since u have a decent job in hand u can aim only for the top ten dont even think of anything beyond them, in case u feel that infy aint quite upto what u desire, u will always find 10 other MNC's which will take u just for the infy tag.

2) The salary leaves a lot to be desired.......to touch 60K be prepared to slog ur a** for 5-6 years atleast, u will touch 40K in 3-4 years

3) depends on the project u get into. some projects demand that u put in 13-14 hrs per day on an average and in some projects people have been on the bench for 3-4 months at a stretch...u heard it right...go to office do nothing for 8.5 hrs and pack off at 5:30

4) Forget learning any languages or doing any projects....enjoy ur final year like hell...those guys will train u in whatever technology they want.

5) My answer to this wud be an emphatic YES

I have close to 5 yrs exp in IT.And I was in Infy for a short stint only for 3 months.I can tell you the place sucks. The only reason ppl stick around there and work their A** off is b'cos they think by doing that they can cross the Atlantic.Their onsite compensation was good once upon a time but even that has been reduced now.The Indian salary is pathetic with a huge variable component which you might or might not get.And 50000 to 60000 !!!!!!!!!!! Boy u must be kidding. For an average guy it takes some 10 yrs to get that.More importantly that place suffocates and its a very bureaucratic organisation and they have some real crap rules like ladies should wear western on Mondays and guys should wear ties.
They try to stifle your growth. As a fresher you don't even get proper internet access. You can access the net only for 1 hr and that time the whole Infy tries to access the net and so u can imagine.
Most of the ppl inside are very frustrated and either think of leaving the company or trying to find favour with them and try to go abroad.
Don't think i'm trying to belittle you but getting in Infy is no longer a pride nor is it a prized job.
Had you asked this question in the early 90s then it might have been worth joining Infy forgoing you MBA but not now.
Go all out for CAT

hey this is getting interesting now.
as most of my opinions stand seconded here, i ws wondering is someone could give me the scene in Tata Consultancy. now onsite is max in TCS, even the dog next door knows that, so more onsite meaning-more foreign allowance and stuff , so more lucrative.
can someone of you enlightened souls care to throw some light on Tata Consultancy?

sorry to diverge from the topic, but we all know we all want nothing but CAT!!!

Ok lemme introduce myself -- am karthik and have joined INFY this July straight out of campus.. And to set the record strait i don't like people BAD MOUTHING my company. Hmm this place has it's + and - like every other damn place !!! So it's not fair to only focus on the negatives. Agreed that it's a little tough for freshers but it's not so bad !!! Agreed Infy's brand name has been diluted recently due to so many recruits but still it's a great place to work .. It's an institution in itself !!! And i dont need to answer trivial concerns like dress codes, internet access(u actually get around 4 hrs plus fulltime on weekends), favouratism etc. So all that i can say to freshers is -- if u wanna take a good job try any good MNC(Sun,Motorola...).. If u wanna work in an INDIAN Company i would say this is the BEST as we have a great work culture..

Hi nishith,
I have been in Infy for about 8 months and just before joining i was in the same delimma as u r in at present, but because the cat was scrapped last year i had lost the tempo by february and could score only around 93 so took up Infy. Will crack the CAT next year.

The shortest answer to ur first question is leave infy only for IIMs, ISB(not exactly for u as of now), XLRI, FMS, SPJain, MDI, IIFT(did i miss something?)

For the rest of ur questions I would say that Infy is not that great to start as a fresher as it used to be 10 years back, but certainly not as bad as other guys in the thread are portraying it to be. I think people with some experience in the IT industry should have learnt by now that bad-mouthing a company in which one has worked previously is considered highly unprofessional and is against corporate ethics.

I believe that it is a perfect place to make a start if u want to crack CAT with some experience under ur belt. See to earn money u have to work, in any job initially u have to burn ur heart. If u cannot compete with 30000 odd guys(80% of whom are not cat material) how can u imagine getting 99.99 in a competition with around 130000 guys??

All is cool here, the rules and regulations are not killing at all, in fact u can move around quite freely and play snooker or TT if u do ur job properly!

Don't worry, the training is quite good and since ur from a non IT background u will have 3&1/2 months 'long cycle' training, which should be suuficient to launch u into production. However get along with ur CS friends and try and learn the basics of C/C++, Java, Oracle, VB, Unix etc.

Cracking CAT with the job is very much possible if u have the determination to do, I mean lots of guys have done that in the past and I will do that next year, only thing is never lose ur focus.

And yes MBA is quite necessary given the breakneck competition in this field, it will act like a ladder in 'snakes and ladder' which will enrich u and propogate u up the corporate pyramid. U can be a manager through experience too, but that might take a lot of time.

Don't be unduly concerned about earning money now, of course at the end of the day all of us work for that, but as of now look for sound experience. Just have the right focus and know what u have to do to get there , money, fame etc. will follow.

Still for ur benefit i am putting up some facts about the salaries in various IT companies, do take a look...best of luck!

i dont understand why ppl think the quality of a company is diluted when it starts recruiting a lot .....is it the cheap ego that u think that you are one of the previleged few.????
Ibm has clost to 4 lakh ppl and accenture close to two lakh.......is their brand name gettnig any worse?????Take this thing out of ur mind and for a company to get global they have to recruit....and just think u have a job right now only cos they are recruiting ....Put ur head up and live....

Re: infosys people..must see..... - 28-10-2004, 07:34 PM

Even I'm a final yr student placed in infosys.I seek a few clarifications.
I'm writing cat this year.Getting percentiles in the range of 98-99.
Being a fresher,my chances of getting into a,b,c,l are bleak. In the event of making it to iims after a year or two(of which I'm reasonably confident),would the experience in infy serve as a useful value-addition?
For example: If i work on an I-Bank related S/W project, would it help me *understand the nitty-gritty of investment banking?
Moreover , i'm not technically inclined and am not sure whether a highpaying hardcore-tech job in say an IBM or a Honeywell would suit my temperament.
In the light of this, would you still advise me to try and get hold of an MNC job?
Let me add that the pay is not a criterion for me.I want to work in a firm that
provides me with the most enriching work-experience which will hold me in
good stead when I get into a b-school.
