An enquiry - 12-10-2004, 10:57 AM

Hi Guys & Gals,

I have been working in INFY for 1 & 1/2 years. I would like to know if there would be any problems of getting admission into one of the top business schools(IIM,XLRI,FMS, etc) if i take a 1 year break from my job to study? Would i face any problem in the personal interview because of this and would it affect my admission chances? Please help me out. Thanks

Re: An enquiry - 12-10-2004, 11:09 AM

I enquired about the same stuff from some seniors last year...here are some snippets what they told me

-- Why do you want to leave the job and study at home..for god's sake, it's not UPSC..it's just CAT...you can very well manaeg preparing for CAT with a job if you set your priorities right...

It makes sense....

-- See, These IIM guys want a sincere student who can handle everything..That's what a manager is supposed to do right ? That's why they ask acads to a fresher and regarding work with a work ex guys...Sitting at home for CAT moght prove to be a deterrent in the interview..

this response scared me off

--What Bulls*%$...Have you gone nuts? Can't you manage not being overambitious at work and just do the minimum ( common minimum program ) at work and then save some energy for CAT every day ..Weekend is anyway yours...

this motivated me...( but you can't always run a CMP at work ... but that comes when you get ambitious at work. If you are not, well and good )

But, I would be interested in looking at the responses of some of the seniors at PG who are IIMs and elsewhere...( for a pure selfish motive in the event of myself not cracking CAT this time )

I think, therefore I am ..............Rene Descartes

IMHO, taking a break is definitely considered as a step backward, when compared to cruising thru a smooth career - in getting a call (or as others have put, in the placement stage).

But then, if u have to take a break... cant think of cracking CAT without it... or u hv that gut feeling, tht a break wud catapult u into the "big %ile league", go for it... there have been n number of instances of ppl taking a break n adorning the IIMs (and other illustrious B schools)...

Hey man, why do you want to take a break when there is nothing to do in your project. Utilise that time and you need not take a break at all.

This is a fellow infoscian ... don't leave u'r job !!!
And if u really wanna study for CAt why do u need 1 year ?? U can always quit the job around june or july !!! Leaving job at this point of time (1.5 yrs exp with prob of onsite chances !!!) doesn't seem rite 2 me !!!!!!!
