Dude,
This IS a C thread. Being biased towards C ain't bad, and definitely ain't false. None of the facts written by the seniors are lies.
As for the "newspaper reports" thingy, where do u think all aspirants get their information from? Newspapers, TV, internet etc. Basically, MASS media. You'll find umpteen instances of highest salary reports, but will be hard pressed to find articles about C culture, C industry interactions etc. It is the Media which can and has been used to perpetuate falseties. Unfortunately, the candidates go for the "general" opinions of aunties, uncles and the TV reporter when deciding whether to give CAT or not. That is what constitutes mob mentality and that is what I am against.

Re: [2010-2012] IIM Calcutta Call Getters Discussion - 03-04-2010, 01:21 PM

ummm... i believe discussion has come directly to comparing B Schools.
So probably my last post in this discussion.
As i mentioned in my previous post, the people 'do' choose IIM C over IIM A. I am not saying anyone is better. Nope!
I just felt that my friend their had the belief that no one can ever ever chuck IIM A for IIM C. And i added to it my personal choice that people CAN actually do it as i might do if i get both calls.
My reasons are completely my own and the perceptions i made at the interviews.

Following text is pure opinion, not meant to hurt anyone. These are just MY reasons and am giving them as a friend 'dj1' asked for them
->I felt IIM A takes up people who have been brilliant all their life and will continue to be brilliant. So it's a mutual benefit. Best people get the best B school tag, best b school get the best students.
->I, on the other hand, have been a loser almost all my life. It's only lately that I've finally awakened and worked hard to get something. And this, I see in IIM C, the desire to excel and grow.
->Yes, I am a very cultural person who likes a soothing place to be.

Everyone is free to choose their destinations. we are here to discuss opinions so we can get a view of what others think. So i am just posting my thoughts and i wish not to hurt anyone.

Re: [2010-2012] IIM Calcutta Call Getters Discussion - 03-04-2010, 01:25 PM

Although this topic started on a non-argument (Subjective/professional) based on a flimsy assumption (asking percentiles)-I mean seriously, I still don't get your point!!-I was glad it turned into a constructive debate about the difference between both the IIMs. Differences, not why one is better than the other!
Its really sad there isn't a formal forum where one gets to understand the concepts that are IIMA and IIMC. I must say I am in a serious dilemma over this issue, at the risk of getting ahead of myself here. I really want to read some constructive views on this subject..I obviously am not content with one being 'generally' better than the other... and I wish there were people who respected both and gave views on both without unnecessary mud slinging. But unfortunately its apparently not allowed here, and for a seemingly good reason too.

So what the IIM C graduates here can do is perhaps give us a source where a positive discussion on this has happened. A blog, a website, a book or something, if any such entity exists.
That;d be appreciated immensely!!

i wud suggest if u hav finance in mind...and want to lead some kind of a life which is very traditional and full of culture and sooth....go to JOKA....

if u hav consulting in mind....want to lead a stylish...glamourous life...go to WIMWI.....choice is urs...

both schools are good in some fields...and nt so good in others....

ps: personal opinion...dnt groan...
We are all going crazy! Let me too pitch in.

dj1 is right about the environment in WIMWI, its academically driven and much more individualistic (though I wont comment on stylish and all, I am from Ahmedabad and I know how stylish they are, some of my geekish family friends are in WIMWI ) This in no way means that they arent good, I believe the crowd at both IIM C and IIM A would be pretty good, we cant say people in one college are better than the other.

You are also right about C being the finance campus, to me finance is more glamorous than consultancy, I would love to be called an i banker (Again personal opinion). I feel anyone interested in finance should prefer IIM C over IIM A.

As for the culture if A's academically driven then C is student oriented, and I believe most would love to study in a student oriented environment. C's for the mavericks, A for the padhakus.

Though calling the environment at C lazy is stupid, even people from XLRI(not just the jokaites) have told me that C's campus is brimming with energy.

well i dont have IIMA or IIMC calls.. but i just want to pitch in.. we all seem to agree that when it comes to choosing bschools it comes down to personal choice.. and there are umpteen instances of people going for C over A.. but lets also keep in mind that there is definitely a "general" trend of choosing IIMA over IIMC.. and A is "generally" considered the best Bschool in India.. and i ( as well as lots of other asps ) subscribe to this "general" consideration..

amen
Yes you are right, most prefer A and its basically due to the rankings. A also has a stronger alumni network than C. But still as I have already mentioned A's waiting list did clear till 30 last time, there are people who also think beyond the rankings.

And even though I feel I suit C's student oriented culture more I might opt for A over C, not because I consider A as better but because I am from Ahmedabad, A's home.

1. IIMC has a high average salary...doesnt mean it has better placements...finance grads get a high pay packet...and C selects some of them who are gr88 at this(maths)...so the numbers jump....
2. this a comment not supported by any logic...i knw many who only attend A interview....coz they say...if nt A its just another IIM
3. then u hav to see A campus...it is much more beautifull....
4. agreed on this one.....but A balances out by nt givin it to mavericks but to consistent performers...
5. pls elucidate
6. cannt counter this one...u win...join IIMC....
Everything you said is actually pretty correct! Cant comment on the campus though as I have seen only A, though in pics C looks cooler, specially the lake and all.

Finally both A and C are 'GREAT' B schools which can actually not be compared. While C has some positives A has others, rather than calling one of them inferior its better we decide what we want, decide which one suits us better. Make an informed decision rather than just go by the rankings.

And the most important question we need to ask ourselves now is "What do we want to do?" We need to decide which specialization we are going to take then find out which skool A,B or C has better faculty, industrial relations, placement profiles for that specialization and thus make an informed decision.

P.S My opinions are formed on the basis of my interactions with seniors and alumni of A, B and C and also the coaching institute guys . I might well be wrong and would love to be corrected.

As for comparisons between B schools I think we can have a healthy discussion, not maligning any particular B school and discussing things objectively. We are all confused aspirants and what place better than pg to help us decide where to join.

Re: [2010-2012] IIM Calcutta Call Getters Discussion - 03-04-2010, 02:00 PM

1. What is the approximate % of BSc,B.Com graduates in the current batch?
I have heard that once you secure a GD/PI call it becomes slightly easier for a BSc,B.Com grad to convert as institutes look to have a good mix of Engineers,Science,Commerce ..etc.

Is there any truth to the above sentence.

Btw I am a science grad.

Dude,
I would suggest speaking to your mentor or speaking to one of the puy seniors here. PM them, ask for their phone no, and speak to them about this. You won't be able to gather the info you want by just reading on the net, or even through PM. Make sure you talk to them.

The % ranges from 5-10% every year.
As for easier/harder, I would say it is dependent on how your interview went, rather than ur graduating degree. Since ur intv must already be over, sit tight and keep your fingers crossed!

@ IIM Calcutta seniors.

I have a sincere request, dont know whether it is wrong according to PG rules or not.

You guys can come up with posts highlighting C's positives, telling us about C, why C and also why not

At the same time you do not have to compare Joka with any other B school for that matter, just tell us about Joka (That way it wont be comparison and we will also get to know IIM Cal better)

Now we are done with the GD/PI process its time we discussed IIM Calcutta

P.S. I would personally like a to read about C's industrial relations, faculty and placement profiles for individual specializations. Again no comparison just about C. I know its our job and we should get to know all this from the internet, our mentors, college seniors and blah blah but still it would be great if you could tell us.
