This notion of making work-ex a pre-requisite makes sense in US and not in india.
In any good US b-school,we'll find people from different domains i.e guys with banking experience,IT exp,or even in some cases managerial experience. In sharp contrast,in India you'll find 80% of the work-ex would've been in IT.Despite their IT
backgrounds, many of these students (at least half) won't be opting for systems. Thus, their pre-MBA experience will be of little significance in their post-MBA assignments. For instance, sam, tell me how on earth coding experience in wipro/TCS *is going to help you in an I-Bank *say Goldman sachs?
* * As far as your prejudice against engineers is concerned, keep in mind that in India, unlike in US, the quality of commerce/arts education is abysmal. This is largely because most good students don't even consider commerce/arts as an option when they're in 12th. There are exceptions of course, but they're few and far in between.
Moreover it is not binding on every engineer to become a technologist. The engineering course helps you develop comfort with numbers and an analytical bent of mind which are essential to be successful in any walk of life.
I agree that coding exp doesnot help quite a lot in jobs post mba. But than it is not a waste either depending on which companies you try to join. To ask one question, do freshers be it engg or non-engg know how organisations work. They pass out from b-s schools and recurited as managers but do they actually know how to handle people. Handling people in college is different from that in workplace. Also you mention that exp can be a criteria in US and cannot work in India. Man please give reasons why you think so before making a plain statement.
Just for your info....whatever be the job be raod side sweeper or a programmer in biggest companies...the learnings are always there, only thing you need is the heart to learn from it. Also let me ask you did you , how many students actually take engg because they want to ...in most of the cases people look at what is HOT and go after that. Also you are wrong in saying that commerce education is abysmal. Passing the CA exams is not easy man. Infact the CA exams in india are one of the most difficult CA exams in the world. Also not many clear it in first attempts. Does it imply that all people appearing for these sort of exams have no knowledge.

One last question assume you are a b-school pass out. you are given an assignment to do all alone that is convince a customer as to why your company should be its IT solns provider. I bet you will find it real difficult to convince your customer if you donot know how things work in software industry.

This is my personal view. No matter what your education background is, exp is very important in post-grad education. I know most of you will agree that people in US and other international B-schools are not fools to have work-exp as one of the most important criteria for education.

Views and counter-views are most welcomed.

Hi ajain,
Nice viewpoint.
A few clarifications:I guess i did dwell on why work-ex is more of a value-add in US than in india.Stiffmaester's post has also addressed this point.
Anyway, I'll be the last person to assert that work-ex is futile. It must be given weightage, but its importance shouldn't be blown out of proportion.A few ppl here look upon work-ex as a panacea for all problems faced by Indian management education.Of late, even in the US , bschools are increasingly looking at freshers seriously.Harvard is intending to consider ppl with just a yr or two of work-ex.In fact, there was an article in this regard in the Economist magazine recently.
As far as commerce education goes, there's no doubt that there are plenty of
competent students. But their number is miniscule compared to the total
output of all commerce colleges.

Hey ,

I feel wat u r saying is not upto the mark .. Dear ultimately engg has to
manage the tech . Its not everytime to innovate what u usually perceive in the
case of ENggrs .... Engg have to scale the product understand the customer needs
and offcourse make tech more viable for the general people ....
So i think in that scenario its like mandatory to have some management knowledge
for the enggrs
