Ratio of First attempt to Repeaters in B-schools.... - 16-09-2004, 11:29 AM

Hey everyone,
I have been wanting to ask this question for quite some time now to the PGites in b-schools......
Wot is the ratio of ppl who have cracked CAT and got into b-school in their first attempt to the ppl who took more than a year to get thru...
Usually I see a lot of ppl on this forum who appear to have given CAT more than once to get thru...
This wud atleast give us an idea abt the success rate of first timers like me....
Also it is said that the CAT score is valid for one yr....wot does it exactly mean....does it mean that I can use my CAT score in 2004 this yr and use the score to apply and appear for GD next yr along with ppl who have given CAT 2005???
Pleez help me clear these doubts.....

actually, this will give second timers like me a better idea about our strike rate. first timers get in depending on their first time prep (if you know what i mean!) but second timers are already somewhat prepared, it is their strategy and sometimes their luck that is faulty..

Can i inmprove my accuracy?
Can i adapt my strategy to the demands of the cat?
Can i beat the first-timers who are going in for the exam without prejudice towards the exam/.
and so on!
Also, second timers tend to have more work-ex. (often), so that somehow may improve their hit rate.

Out of the junta in the IIMs and the other top b-schools, 50% are freshers. Out of the remaining 50%, some might be taking CAT for the first time and some might be 2nd/3rd timers. If u take, that half the workex junta is taking CAT for the first time, then the ratio comes to something like 3:1 (first timers : repeaters).

Pleez help me clear these doubts.....

in view even if the score is valid for one year..than to get admission next year the score has to be valid for atleast 1 year and 4-5 months...because this year's CAT is in november..and if it can be used again also then it has to remain valid till the final selection is done for the next year..apr 2006..

This is my personal view..not based on any fact or some thing...
if someone knows the exact official rule regarding this, i wud request him to post that here.....

Guys, the CAT is for admissions only for that academic year...its not like GRE where the scores are valid for more than a year...

And i dont really know how strike rates will really prospective students... there are many people who worked for many years just to crack it...just today i talked to a classmate of mine...he cracked cat in his 4th attempt! Now thats dedication!
If tehres any thing u can learn from the "strike rate" its the dedication. Look at chandoo's post again regarding his cat story, now that fellow worked! I know it cos we prepped together once a while and he actually managed to do work as well as study efficiently.

Ok now for some useful contribution to the thread -

Repeaters do have the advantage of work ex...but that does not have any implication on the way their CAT goes and helps only for the gd/pi stage.

In IIMB almost 60% of the batch are freshers (dont remember the exact figure but it is definitely a sizeable population). As for repeaters, there is absolutely no information available as to how many have written CAT more than once. Thats cos no one requires the info once ur into the college. Anyways, All the best,
Regards,
Sanjeev Garuda

Hey,
Thanks a lot for ur valuable inputs sanjeev....Its always encouraging to hear abt ppl who made it with their sheer dedication and determination.
Thank u for clearing my doubts regarding the CAT validity...had that doubt for quite some time now. These ppl make such ambiguous statements that a person really gets confused.....they shud actually state that the score is only valid for the admissions for that term.
Thanks Again,

Murtuza
